121102 -
121103 - JPS switched us from NT to Unix. Encountered some problems related to
121104 - case sensitive pathnames. Contacted JPS about answering questions on
121105 - making this change. Converted records to new IP address. Unix server
121106 - seems to work better. JPS is investigating options. Should hear from
121107 - JPS by COB on their ideas.
121108 -
121109 - Submitted ref DIT 1 to Bruce, and linked to this record. Advise that,
121110 - assuming the Unix server performs better, Welch can work around the
121111 - case sensitive directory issue, per below. ref SDS 0 2499 Sent copy

121508 -
121509 - As a result of JPS letter, ref DRP 9 8477, received yesterday, I

121518 - I asked who is working on the questions in our letter sent to
121519 - JPS yesterday, ref DIP 6 5202, per, ref SDS 26 6439?
121520 -
121521 - Jared advised there is no one in Biz Tech to help us. They will be
121522 - back at 0800.
121523 -
121524 - We discussed briefly the benefit of notifying the customer when a
121525 - major change is about to be made, so we can change our code to avoid
121526 - the duplication and disruption that occurred today.
121527 -
121528 - This notice requires a phone call confirmed by email, rather than
121529 - email alone, because people may be busy and not read email until a
121530 - large body of work has been done that has to be redone.

121535 - Unix Case Sensite Directories, Changed sd to SD - Need Both to Work
121536 -
121537 - As a result of JPS change from NT to a Unix server, we have to change
121538 - the FTP program, ws_ftp, so it is using the new IP address submitted
121539 - by Neal yesterday. ref SDS 26 8064
121540 -
121541 - I had to spend an hour or so figuring out what files have been
121542 - transferred the past two days, convert, assemble and send them again.
121543 -
121544 - These initial FTP efforts seem to work better than on NT, as
121545 - contemplated by Neal on 990424. ref SDS 25 8461 (see discussion with
121546 - Bruce Newland, below. ref SDS 0 2553, and successful transfer later
121547 - during late PM. ref SDS 0 9654
121548 - ..
121549 - After transferring the files again, we got a lot of errors
121550 - trying to open SDS records from our letters and documents, saying...
121551 -
121552 - There is no URL for "SD"

121557 - at ref SDS 2 4880
121558 -
121559 - Jarrod isn't sure what to do.
121560 -
121561 - Talked to Ben, a supervisor.
121562 -
121563 - Ben will ask Biz Tech to set a switch so Unix works like NT and is
121564 - not case sensitive for directories and filenames.
121565 - ..
121566 - Since I have a bunch of letters linked to SDS records using "SD"
121567 - in the path, Ben changed the directory name from sd to SD, so people
121568 - can open SDS records linked to correspondence.
121569 -
121570 - Ben said someone from Biz Tech will call us at 0900 instead of 0800,
121571 - to discuss a full solution.
121572 -
121573 - After talking to Ben, it turns out that we have SD in the code going
121574 - from letters to SDS records, but we have sd in the code going between
121575 - SDS records. There are thousands of SDS records and only a few
121576 - hundred letters, most of which are no longer effective. People read a
121577 - letter and maybe delete it. SDS records, however, are used over and
121578 - over under the theory of "intellectual capital." ref OF 1 6649

122321 -
122322 - ...on this issue, per discussion with Doug. ref SDS 0 5040
122323 -
122324 - Someone is supposed to call us in 10 minutes. He seemed to mention
122325 - Erik will call.
122326 -
122327 - Their concern is that Unix servers and NT servers are not helping us,
122328 - so maybe JPS is not the answer.
122329 - ..
122330 - Bruce asked if Unix has improved performance?
122331 -
122332 - I explained it is a little early to say, per above. ref SDS 0 5220
122333 -
122334 - We have only been using the new server for a day, and most of that has
122335 - been during off peak hours. My sense is that it seems to be working
122336 - better. We had one hang on changing directories during an upload, and
122337 - none since, so this is a big improvement. We need more experience to
122338 - really tell, as set out in my letter to Neal on 990424, linked to
122339 - question 3. ref SDS 25 3762
122340 -
122341 - I will be uploading more stuff later today, and we will get a better
122342 - impression about performance improvements. (see report of successful
122343 - transfer below. ref SDS 0 9654
122344 - ..
122345 - He asked me to keep him informed about progress on this.
122346 -
122347 - Bruce said he is very familiar with SDS records, indicating he has
122348 - been getting some Welch mail sent to other JPS people.
122349 -
122350 - Bruce might be interested in guidelines on using SDS links that
122351 - seem overwhelming, as reviewed on 990419. ref SDS 22 2320
122352 -
122353 - [Below, Bruce comments on this method. ref SDS 0 9400]
122354 -
122355 - My concern is that if we make a huge effort to change our code for the
122356 - Unix environment, in a week or so performance of the JPS system will
122357 - have degraded further, due to increased usage, to where the current
122358 - benefit of Unix goes away, and Unix has the same problems NT now has
122359 - changing directories, which requires someone to attend every upload,
122360 - and to do some "manual repair" to start things over, if the whole
122361 - completely crashes.
122362 - ..
122363 - Bruce indicated that "bandwidth" is a potential cause of the
122364 - problem about changing directories.
122365 -
122366 - He is unaware of current efforts by JPS to increase bandwidth.
122367 - ..
122368 - One immediate solution I can do is change the code that enters
122369 - links in documents from "SD" to "sd."
122370 -
122371 - JPS can change us back to sd, so all the SDS links work.
122372 -
122373 - [Bruce made this change below. ref SDS 0 2499]
122374 -
122375 - This is easier than changing all the SDS records to SD.
122376 -
122377 - I asked Ben to change us from sd to SD last night, so Morris and
122378 - others can access the records from my letter. But this created a
122379 - huge problem of making all of the links in SDS unaccessible.
122380 -
122381 - [On 990426 changed code to use sd for documents instead of SD
122382 - when linking to SDS records. ref SDS 29 7463]
122384 - ..
1224 -
1225 -
1226 - 1146 called Bruce back
1227 -
122701 - Advised the JPS team has not yet called.
122702 -
122703 - Bruce put me on hold and walked over to ask about expediting contact.
122704 -
122705 - Bruce came back online and advised that the technical people are still
122706 - considering what action to take. They are discussing an "Apache
122707 - patch" for the Unix server; but, they have not progressed very far
122708 - with this investigation.
122709 -
122710 - Bruce said JPS will call us later today about their ideas.
122711 -
122712 - [This did not occur, but see improved service. ref SDS 0 1264]
122713 - ..
122714 - Neal comes in at 1500. He is more experienced with Unix, so we
122715 - may not get a response until after they have a chance to talk to Neal.
122716 -
122717 - I asked who is in charge of deciding what to do after JPS completes
122718 - its review?
122719 -
122720 - PJ Balsley is the supervisor of the group. His email address is
122721 -
122722 - pbalsely@corp.jps.net
122723 - ..
122724 - I asked Bruce to change us back to "sd" so the large body of SDS
122725 - records will be available, per analysis above. ref SDS 0 5580
122726 -
122727 - Bruce did this.
122728 -
122729 - I think, now, it is a fairly nominal effort to change correspondence
122730 - from SD to sd, and upload this stuff again. So, for the time being,
122731 - will notify JPS to stand down on trying modify Unix.
122732 -
122733 - Actually, this is a larger problem than I initially considered.
122734 -
122735 - Correspondence through email sent using the prior "SD" string, is
122736 - no longer accessible. This is mitigated slightly because email is
122737 - fungible. People discard it and wait for the next one. In our
122738 - case, however, we are using email as a marketing effort where
122739 - people forward letters to friends and colleagues to illustrate this
122740 - new method. To the extent that is actually happening, a large body
122741 - of work has now been lost. We can send people replacements, but it
122742 - is not an effective sales point asking prospective customers to
122743 - forward corrected documents to their pals.
122744 - ..
122745 - Second, we will have to do some minor editing, possibly
122746 - requiring a few hours to convert our home page stuff to a uniform
122747 - case directory structure, i.e., all upper or lower case. For us,
122748 - the conversion task is reduced, because 99% of our files use
122749 - numerical names that are not affected by case. This is just a
122750 - lucky accident that we have not followed industry practice and used
122751 - long-winded narrative paths and filenames.
122752 - ..
122753 - Third, it appears that "INDEX.HTM" in the root directory no
122754 - longer executes automatically unless it is in all lower case --
122755 - index.htm. This is a bigger problem. It may be solved by entering
122756 - a switch identifying our directory on the Unix server, as a "root"
122757 - directory for purposes of HTML. Talking to JPS people, Ron and
122758 - Liem, they advise it must be in lower case. Since all files are
122759 - uploaded in upper case, we have to make a special effort for this
122760 - one file each time it is edited to change it to lower case on the
122761 - server.
122762 -
122763 - [On 990426 did this. ref SDS 29 8562]
122764 -
122765 - This is a classic example of technology improvement conflicting
122766 - with practical business considerations. Today, I am opting for
122767 - better technology because I don't think our problem is that great,
122768 - given that we are fairly early in the game on the marketing effort.
122770 - ..
122771 -
122772 - JPS might use this record for training efforts to restrain action
122773 - that seems appropriate through the prism of technology alone, but
122774 - warrants careful consideration on a larger scale, as proposed on
122775 - 990424 (see point 6). ref SDS 25 7485
122776 -
122777 - It supports an initiative to provide a simple means to switch Unix
122778 - into a mode that emulates NT on this particular point.

122784 - ..
122785 - We still have the question of whether Unix may, in a week or a
122786 - few months, begin having the prior problems of hanging up on changing
122787 - directories, as is now occurring with NT, and occurred previously with
122788 - Unix when we changed to NT last year.

123103 -
123104 - He was unaware of review by Biz Tech per above.
123105 - ..
123106 - I will send him a copy of the letter to Bruce, so he can update
123107 - the records in Technical Support on this issue.
