-
- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Gary responding to the letter on Friday,

-
- Submitted email response with copy to Morris and linked to this
- record, and listing following pending issues....
-
- 1. Developing collaboration between you and Morris, if possible.
- ..
- 2. Plans for joining forces, including initial scope. What
- is the big picture, and what steps can be taken within means
- available to make progress?
-
- 3. Ownership participation for Gary, which may need a bit more
- analysis by Gary to confirm SDS is the right direction, and,
- if so, giving him the SDS program to learn and use. Some how,
- some way, getting him some support.
- ..
- Gary does not say anything about contacting Morris, which is an
- express action item, ref DIP 11 TF4F, reported on 020104. ref SDS G4
- SS5I
-
- When I called Morris on 020104, he indicated not having heard from
- Gary.
- ..
- In the call on Friday, Morris confirmed my sense from the
- meeting with Terry Winograd on 011219, and from working with Doug's
- group the past two years, that there is no class of software for
- SDS.
-
- SDS is not a PIM, although it does a lot of that stuff. It is not
- AI, although it augments intelligence. We could use KM, but that
- is falling on hard times, per Pat Lincoln on 010426, ref SDS C2
- 657O
- ..
- Actually, I like KM because it is a simple explanation for
- moving beyond IT, which is our goal, per POIMS. ref OF 1 HO4H
-
- We could call SDS an Enterprise Management program, although that
- too is running out of gas, like KM.
- ..
- In our call on 020104, Morris proposed describing SDS as
- "structured wordprocessing," which isn't too bad, because it
- encompasses the organization that Bill DeHart cited in our call on
- 000709, ref SDS 72 0052, and it is similar to "Wordprocessing in
- Context" which I explained in a letter to Morris on 010226.
- ref SDS A8 TE3F
-
- Of course wordprocessing does not encompass contacts and data base
- aspects of the SDS "plan, perform, report" design that manages
- multiple users, multiple projects, and multiple subjects, etc.,
- which Morris calls the Welch Management Method, in our call on
- 911123. ref SDS 6 0477
-
- Maybe Gary can propose something on this.
-
- ..
- Gary says today....
-
- 1. Sorry about not providing explicit links, but there is nothing
- like "purple numbers" in the standard documents, so the best I
- could do was to quote from the papers to provide context.
- ref DRT 1 0001
- ..
- This addresses a big issue of linking to the record,

- numbers added that speed up copying anchors to link the
- record. ref SDS G7 6F8N
-
- [On 020320 notified Gary about adding feature for
- entering redundant links to internal anchors that
- facilitate copying a link address in order to connect
- correspondence to knowledge space. ref SDS G8 0001
- ..
- Anchors are on every heading and most paragraphs in
- SDS records, and on every paragraph in correspondence and
- other external reports cited in SDS records. Anchors can be
- determined with the browser feature using the right mouse
- click to open a menu and selecting "View Source." This

- YO5J
-
- It is easy to capture the entire Internet address for a
- source by right clicking to highlight contents of the
- location bar, and then selecting "Copy" from the menu that
- pops up. Paste this in an email and then append the anchor
- from procedure above. This takes about 10 seconds or so to
- provide a link for quoted text. In something like POIMS and
- NWO it takes a little longer, because they are big docs, but
- I use the procedure, and find at most it takes about 20
- seconds.
-
- [On 020107 Gary plans to try this procedure, and asks to
- confirm it will work for files that are external to SDS.
- ref SDS G5 W69L

-
- [On 020320 created redundant link capability in SDS and
- modified save to add more links to SDS records.

- Gary says in his letter today....
-
- 2. Thanks for the follow up. It gives me a better idea of what SDS
- does and how it goes about doing it. ref DRT 1 KW5L
-
- I have much to consider. ref DRT 1 VW6O
- ..
- Good to hear that explanation of SDS features is helpful, as

- Faith Moves Mountains When Applied to Good Ideas
- Experience Using SDS Builds Faith for Culture of Knowledge
-
- Hopefully, Gary's considerations will not take too much
- longer.
-
- [On 020107 Gary plans to contact Morris relatively soon,
- and recognizes a lot of questions about SDS will be
- answered by using it. ref SDS G5 CT5L and ref SDS G5
- 0001
-
- Hopefully, there is enough faith without chasing down every
- conceivable issue, to move forward. Existence of SDS
- records showing a seminal design that is effective, as
- reported on 010907, ref SDS D4 KX3L, justifies efforts to
- enable others to use SDS, as an extension of the alphabet
- for reasons set out below. ref SDS 0 394M
- ..
- Additional incentive offered to Gary is ownership in
- SDS that may bring remuneration, recognition, and
- satisfaction of advancing civilization by improving alphabet
- technology.
-
- We can explain theory, per POIMS, but no one understands the
- theory of alphabet technology, and many seem to be afraid of
- cognitive science, per meeting with Terry at Stanford on
- 011219. ref SDS F9 4P6H
-
- We can calculate cost savings, as USACE did on 971007,
- ref DRP 8 0001, But, since no one has ever calculated cost
- savings for alphabet technology, it is difficult for people
- to follow a calcualation of cost savings using SDS.
- ..
- Therefore, some initial faith must register in order for SDS

- technology makes people "superhuman," reported on
- 010622, ref SDS C7 N668, it follows that improving
- this capability should be an important advance, i.e.,
- a killer app.
- ..
- 2. Alphabet technology, commonly called "literacy," and
- reading and writing, is taught without any effort to
- explain theory or cost savings. The people who teach
- the alphabet don't understand the theory and are never
- asked to prove cost savings. The people taught the
- alphabet are mostly small children, and so have no
- ability to object by asking how the alphabet works and
- asking for proof of cost savings, relative to talking
- and looking a pictures on television. Literacy is
- forced on children based solely on faith because
- centuries have shown it is effective even though no
- one has ever produced a calculation of cost savings.
- ..
- Alphabet technology is accepted because it produces a useful
- work product that is significantly better than pictures.
- People who cannot read and write look at work product using
- the alphabet, and feel it is magical, as indeed it is.
- ..
- While there are no calculations showing cost savings for
- this method, the accelerated advance of civilization over
- centuries demonstrates the benefit.
- ..
- We don't have centuries. We only have 20 or 30 years, if we

-
- 3. FYI - The reason that SDS records do not render in Opera is
- that Opera is more standards compliant that Explorer! I ran and
- HTML validator over the pages and there are numerous errors.
- The most common one appears to be created by staring every font
- change by closing a presumed open font when there isn't one.
- (Every font markup starts with /font><font ....) When a font
- section is closed early, the /font generates an error. This
- interacts with the pre tag in Opera to destroy the rendering
- because the mismatch of the font open and close hides the pre
- tag. ref DRT 1 UX6F
- ..
- Solution Idea for Failed SDS Display in Gary's Browser
-
- The /font font sequence was adopted after considerable trial
- and error indicated that it provides consistent rendering in
- IE and Netscape, and so can be applied routinely.
-
- Might it be that only the first /font causes the overall
- problem by creating an imbalance between font and /font.
-
- Perhaps Gary can try to manually remove the first /font at
- the top of an SDS record and see if this solves the problem
- in his browser. That is a simple solution, if it works.
- ..
- Actually, I will do that to this record, and so Gary
- need only let me know if it works.
-
- Looking more closely at a converted SDS record, does not
- seem likely this simple solution will get it done. Maybe
