Thanks very much for

on December 22, 2001 asking about program
features, and a second letter commenting on theory and practice using
SDS for Communication Metrics as explained in
Welch publications.

to cover all of your issues.

Your reference to Terry Winograd's work
shows we are thinking along the same lines. A letter to
Terry
on our meeting at Stanford on December 19, may be of interest.

SDS features
enable people to do a lot of little
things that aid memory by providing consistent organization, but without
conscious thought. This frees up time
to focus on big things that impact productivity, as a result of expanding span
of attention.

It seems to me that we share objectives
explained in POIMS and other Welch publications, but your experience using
traditional methods and tools invites caution about
"utopian"
claims. SDS is
by no means a "utopian" system. Experience over the past 15 years shows SDS is
effective, as reported, for example, by
USACE, and shown by this letter.

Current agenda is for you to
contact Morris,
and to begin
linking communication
to POIMS and to other sources. I am more sure than ever that this is a big
step toward transitioning from IT to a culture of knowledge. The degree to
which people resist indicates a conceptual issue of great moment. Fortunately,
SDS makes this fast and easy.
