- report. ref SDS 11 1424 There is a link to the record on 000622 where
- Eric's report is reviewed. ref SDS 10 9626 Made the correction listed
- in Gary's letter and notified Gary saying thanks for the update, per
- below. ref SDS 0 5H3H This illustrates volatility in Internet
- resources where links are "here today and gone tomorrow," as the
- saying goes.
- ..
- Management support requires timely, accurate and reliable
- connections to organizational memory. The example Gary
- gives today shows time may be the only reliable way to
- organize information that is needed later. Fortunately,
- time fits the model of history that grows new knowledge by
- accumulating and analyzing daily experience, as explained

- [On 040317 this issue arises in connection with the
- definition of "publicity" in a contract, whereas most
- folks use the Internet for "selling" and so this could
- be interpretted as a "publicity," however, SDS uses
- the Internet to deliver timely, accurate

-
- On 000327 discussed with Doug Engelbart the critical role
- of stability in tools, methods and data structure for
- Knowledge Management, ref SDS 6 8484, which can, in turn,
- be thought of as a logical advance on literacy, explained
- in the record on 950204, ref SDS 1 4995. The advance of
- civilization has been possible because literacy skills for
- doing higher order knowledge work have been stable for
- thousands of years. Higher order knowledge in professions
- like physics, education, politics, engineering, medicine,
- agriculture, law, construction, and everything else rest
- on foundational skills that are stable and reliable.
- Different people have varying degrees of skills applying
- literacy, but the mechanics are constant.
- ..
- Taking the next step in civilization requires lifting the
- capacity of literacy to augment intelligence through
- ability to think, remember and communicate, called out in
- POIMS, ref OF 7 3742, and, as with alphabetic mind, once
- that design is established, holding it constant for
- thousands of years, reported on 991108, ref SDS 3 5628,
- to work the magic of billions of people producing and
- managing with knowledge, rather than mere information.
-
- [On 040216 Gary explains process of functionality
- stabalizing to improve productivity. ref SDS 23 MT5K
- ..
- It may turn out there are better ways to apply the power
- of knowledge with SDS. Many complain, for example, about
- function keys, similar to the way people once complained
- about spelling or using a period and a space to end a
- sentence. No doubt in the beginning, many felt a period
- is unnecessary overkill. Others with plenty of time on
- their hands, wanted to navigate through menus and select a
- square or triangle symbol instead of a dot, because menus
- are fun and intuitive and a square has more personality,
- while a triangle seems sexier than simple dots. In the
- end, the dot won because, while learning to select a
- square or triangle navigating intuitively through menus
- and checking help takes only minutes, then even though it
- takes years in school to learn how to use a dot, once
- learned, a dot takes less than a second, and since lots of
- dots are needed, the time saved is immense.
- ..
- The challenge in literacy is how to directly execute low
- level decisions in the brain which accumulate into higher
- order structures for understanding and influencing the
- complexity of daily life. An example is assembling a very
- low level understanding about the meaning of an "a" symbol
- in relation to a "p" symbol, which originally evolved from
- ideas about associating sounds with things, but has now
- evolved into merely an abstract representation waiting for
- association with other symbols to form a construct that is
- meaningful to human needs, for example food; and, so,
- associating an "a" with a "p" might eventually be fully
- assembled to express a very complex thought like an
- "apple." Alphabet technology uses simple conventions in
- order to represent the complexity of existence with a
- simple device of separating symbols for a word with less
- space than separates words themselves. Similarly,
- separation showing one thought has ended, and a new,
- related thought building a higher order construction
- begins by using a special symbol called a period. A still
- higher order chunk of related thinking constructing a
- larger meaning is identified with the a simple device to
- construct a paragraph using a blank line or indentation.
- The larger meaning of a paragraph or series of paragraphs
- might be summarized with a headline, and the meaning of
- all the paragraphs and chapters is summarized with the
- title or subject of a book or a paper.
-
- [On 040216 Gary explains process of functionality
- stabalizing to improve productivity. ref SDS 22 A001
- ..
- The mechanics of literacy are based on very simple rules
- for using alphabet technology to create associations that
- construct separate "thoughts," explained in POIMS.
- ref OF 3 ER3G Steven Pinker calculates the alphabet gives
- people the power to form 100 trillion different 10 word
- sentences using the simple commands of literacy, reported
- on 990329. ref SDS 2 ZN6G Similarly, SDS provides simple,
- direct ways to execute commands for accomplishing
- important tasks as part of an integrated system between
- the senses and the dynamics of the real world. Humans are
- wired biologically for the hands to leverage the power of
- the brain through continual feedback loops, as in driving
- a car, driving a nail, even giving a speech, people drive
- their point home with gestures. Given this innate design,
- executing commands directly through function keys provides
- immediate feedback to the brain that permits harmonious
- integration of tasks, called out in POIMS. ref OF 4 8559
- Like literacy, for knowledge work, to be effective, there
- must be a set of basic commands to execute that remain
- stable, so the tools can be used routinely with confidence
- to concentrate on using Communication Metrics skills, set
- out on 001219, ref SDS 15 4W4L, to improve higher order
- knowledge professions using "intelligence" to connect the
- dots along the scale of human cognition set out in NWO.
- ref OF 11 XF6F
- ..
- An example illustrating the importance of stable tools
- that are fast and easy to use, discussed above, is shown
- by Brian Lincoln's letter on 000825 that reported meeting
- with Doug Engelbart on the design for an OHS/DKR software
- program based on the Augment NLS design. ref SDS 13 0F5F
- Brian explained frustration from delay navigating through
- a lot of menus to execute commands, and he reported that
- Doug concurred. ref SDS 13 PX3M
- ..
- The core issue is what commands are needed and how can
- commands be executed immediately and routinely based on
- situational awareness without the overhead burden of
- conscious consideration, so there is no disruption in the
- flow of connecting the dots in the mind to construct
- correlations, implications and nuance into useful stories
- and ideas for getting work done on time and within budget.
- There is an obvious tension between adding commands to
- automate more tasks that improve productivity, and having
- a physical limit on the number of function keys. Even if
- more function keys were added, this would simply defer the
- day of reckoning when there are not enough. SDS solves
- this by using F1 to scroll through a profile level,
- providing an unlimited number of commands that can be
- executed with 1, 2 or 3 steps. Others have used letters
- on the keyboard for functions like Ctrl S, Ctrl F, Ctrl C.
- In recent years, SDS has found ways to consolidate and
- multi-task function keys in order to execute more commands
- without increasing the number of keys. This is more
- efficient, but compounds the initial learning curve, since
- it requires situational awareness.
- ..
- The most recent example is the change to F3 in an SDS
- record that previously only called a Diary Summary, but
- now captures control fields for replication to another
- record, or captures headlines for assigning descriptions
- in the organic structure for a new subject account,
- developed on 040120. ref SDS 21 0001
- ..
- Would like to see some studies on how people have
- addressed the problem Brian and Doug raised on 000825.
- ref SDS 0 JQ9W How can the lesson learned from 3,000
- years of a stable literacy technology be applied to
- empower the next 3,000 years with the power of knowledge

- 3. Your observation that nobody at the time in the 1960s seemed to
- take what had been developed for Augment NLS, and specify a
- prototype or test bed, ref SDS 0 U58U, could be clarified with
- the record on 000120 when Doug assembled a group to work on
- this task. At that time, there was discussion to define
- "knowledge" in a way that enables technology to advance beyond
- traditional information methods, implied by the goal of a
- Dynamic Knowledge Repository. ref SDS 4 5063
- ..
- 4. Looking back, this may be too much to ask, and so may explain
- why innovation often seems to emerge by accident when someone
- stumbles onto "x" by looking for "c." In any case, at that
- time, following your dictum, the team pressed ahead to build a
- DKR by starting in the middle, illustrated by Eric's letter on

- ..
- 5. Months later on 000615 the team suddenly discovered there
- wasn't enough knowledge to build a knowledge repository.

- 7. Then on 001025 Doug applied experience developing and using
- Augment NLS, and writing about goals for technology over a 40
- year career, to publish requirements in an OHS/DKR launch plan

- ..
- 8. After seeing SDS demonstrated at Stanford on 011219, Terry
- Winograd commented that SDS reminded him of seeing Doug
- demonstrate Augment NLS in 1968. ref SDS 16 Y48J, suggesting
- some common ground between Augment NLS and SDS despite
- occurring 20 years apart and without knowledge of Doug or the
- prior work. This reflects efforts to solve the same problem of
- improving management. Reviewing the OHS/DKR Launch plan with
- POIMS helps understand SDS in relation to Augment NLS. For
- example, you have noted a few things SDS supports that
- strengthen the intelligence process set out in POIMS, including
- headlines, record segments and subjects for multiple views to
- manage personal and organizational memory in "chunks" that fit
- within limited span of attention. Doug commented on this issue

- increases opportunity for connecting the dots into alternate
- patterns that yield new ideas and deeper understanding about
- causation and point to potential causation to guide investing
- time for discovery that is the engine of human progress.
- ..
- 10. My guess is that combining external thoughts in documents with
- a diary or journal of internal thoughts integrates time and
- information management with organization, analysis, alignment,
- summary and feedback. Applying the "intelligence" process by
- integrating past, present and future through a schedule and
- diary system helps advance from information to a culture of
- knowledge. You have previously noted the role of "integration"

- SDS. To evolve beyond discovering breakthroughs that show
- promise of utility, requires the work you are doing and Jerry
- is working toward. As related in the 3-step strategy of

- on 040102, each day you use SDS gives people hope and builds
