050604 - using his letter to the Colloquium at Stanford. Dick also sent a
050605 - letter asking about how to explain SDS to help others benefit from the
050606 - POIMS capability. ref SDS 0 9862 I reviewed the matter and sent a

051005 - Metrics. He reviewed the web site, as a result of a recommendation by
051006 - Dick Karpinski, but was not able to determine what product or service
051007 - is provided. Jon wants a simple explanation of SDS, POIMS and of
051008 - Communication Metrics.
051009 -
051010 - Dick Karpinski reports today (see below) that he sent his report
051011 - on SDS that was submitted to the Colloquium at Stanford, to Jon
051012 - and others, and so evidently Jon did not understand it.

051017 -
051018 - Morris has previously urged a simple, down-to-earth explanation
051019 - that his colleagues at Intel can understand, as reported on 990713
051020 - when they evaluated the NSF proposal as funny and alien.

051036 - We can say that SDS is a product that implements a technology, POIMS,
051037 - and is used to accomplish knowledge management.

0912 -
091201 - Received ref DRT 3 0001 from Dick, expressing appreciation for being
091202 - notified about communication with people he contacted to explain SDS.
091203 - Dick sent his letter on SDS to the Colloquium, ref DRP 1 0001, to
091204 - about 6 friends, but had not heard anything back.

091206 - ..
091207 - Human Cognition is not Intuitive, Tricky to Explain SDS
091208 -
091209 - Dick asks how to study what makes it so hard to get into POIMS or
091210 - SDS, the letter from Jon Bondy above, ref SDS 0 3005, with an eye
091211 - to fixing the problems so that many can enjoy the benefits?
091212 - ref DRT 3 5740
091213 -
091214 - On 000223 Dick offered ideas on explaining SDS so it is easier to
091215 - understand. ref SDS 20 0003
091216 -
091217 - He reports today, having submitted his explanation to friends,
091218 - and getting no responses.
091219 -
091220 - This question goes to why scientists and philosophers have not
091221 - yet, and may never figure out how the human mind "turns the water
091222 - into wine," reviewed on 960409. ref SDS 8 7211
091223 -
091224 - The human mind is a complex instrument for interacting with a
091225 - highly complex environment. The conscious span of attention where
091226 - humans think about what they see and hear is only a summary of a
091227 - deeper capability in the subconscious, as explained in POIMS.
091228 - ref OF 1 0561
091229 -
091230 - What might be said is that SDS stumbled onto a design that
091231 - emulates a key process of the subconscious mind, and is a big
091232 - source of its power. But it seems foreign to people, because the
091233 - process works on automatic pilot. People cannot help but connect
091234 - what ever they encounter with what they already know, and compare
091235 - it for alignment, noted by Campbell in his research on AI reviewed
091236 - on 900303. ref SDS 1 6006 Nobody ever thinks about this process,
091237 - because it occurs involuntarily; and, so to explain it causes the
091238 - eyes to glaze over.
091239 -
091240 - The lack of conscious experience working with the SDS design,
091241 - makes it difficult to understand and to intuitively "get it."
091242 -
091243 - For some, as in Dick's case, a "light goes off," and they see a
091244 - thing of beauty. But for most, it remains an enigma of darkness
091245 - and frustration, probably like the alphabet was for thousands of
091246 - years, as a precious few struggled to keep the flame of knowledge
091247 - about this powerful technology alive long enough to take root and
091248 - grow, reviewed on 991108. ref SDS 14 5628
091249 -
091250 - There may be 10 people on earth who can come up with a coherent
091251 - explanation of why the alphabet is a powerful technology, more
091252 - powerful than fire, the computer and the atom. Yet, millions of
091253 - people use and benefit from it each day, because it seems to work
091254 - better than the alternative of being illiterate.
091255 - ..
091256 - So, maybe we should not be striving to help people
091257 - "understand" SDS and POIMS, but rather to let them experience the
091258 - benefits, as discussed a jillion times with Morris, e.g., on
091259 - 990718. ref SDS 13 8966
091260 -
091261 - Jon Bondy submits an inquiry asking for an explanation of how
091262 - SDS works, despite Dick's excellent explanation, which he sent
091263 - to Jon. ref SDS 0 9862 and ref DRT 1 0001
091264 -
091265 - A key factor is stability of the technology. If the alphabet were
091266 - being changed every 6 months or 2 years, we would have a mess. Our
091267 - fundamental, underlying tools have to be stable, so we can use
091268 - them consistently to develop higher level applications, like
091269 - songs, cars, airplanes, constitutions and so on. As noted in the
091270 - record on 991108, once the alphabet was settled, about 700BC, it
091271 - was a complete solution, and has never required any further
091272 - improvements.
091273 -
091274 - A similar issue arises with SDS.
091275 -
091276 - A core set of new functions have been developed, that at last
091277 - extend the power of the alphabet to generate knowledge and ideas,
091278 - principally by introducing the factor of time into the prior
091279 - capability of generating information. This moves up a notch on the
091280 - scale of cognition from "information" to "knowledge."
091281 -
091282 - It should be possible to deliver these new functions in a more
091283 - user friendly mode, in the same way that better paper and writing
091284 - instruments augmented the power of alphabet technology.
091285 - ..
091286 - Sent ref DIT 3 0001 to Dick Karpinski, thanking him for telling
091287 - people about SDS, per above. ref SDS 0 3005 and linking to this record
091288 - on his question about how to deliver a better SDS program, and how to
091289 - help people understand the benefits. ref SDS 0 9583
