1616 - Progress
1617 -
161701 - Using tape #03 and Novaback program, did full file backup on c13 for
161702 - March, 2001.
161703 -
161704 - This operation was started when I left to pick up the car from being
161705 - checked for service defects by S&C Ford.
161706 -
161707 - When I got back the system was in standby mode.
161708 -
161709 - Pressed Shift key to power up the system by returning from standby.
161710 - ..
161711 - The system did not power up.
161712 -
161713 - Noticed the top light of the tape drive showed orange, which indicates
161714 - something.
161715 -
161716 - Pressed Shift several times, moved the mouse. No luck.
161717 -
161718 - Tried Ctrl Alt Del. Windows would not come out of stand by.
161719 -
161720 - Pressed re-set on the CPU case.
161721 -
161722 - The system booted.
161723 -
161724 - During the power up sequence, the w2k splash screen was interrupted
161725 - with a DOS screen that showed drives g, h, and i were scanned for
161726 - defects.
161727 - ..
161728 - The system then booted normally.
161729 -
161730 - Failure to return from standby mode occurred previously to c13 on
161731 - 010216, ref SDS 20 0001, after using the Mammoth LT tape drive, SN
161732 - #60155249.
161733 -
161734 - Mammoth LT tape drive was purchased from Exabyte on 000807,
161735 - ref SDS 3 6800, and installed on 000811, ref SDS 4 0001. It was
161736 - running Novaback version 6.60 for w2k installed on 000812.
161737 - ref SDS 5 0001 On 000816 received tapes from Exabyte, ref SDS 6
161738 - 0001, and on 000928 received the second box of 10 tapes from
161739 - Exabyte. ref SDS 8 0001 On 010202 moved tape drive from c11 to
161740 - c13, connected to Jazz Jet SCSI controller, also, described as
161741 - Advansys SCSI Host Adapter. ref SDS 15 K2FR
161742 - ..
161743 - The top light on the tape drive still showed orange.
161744 -
161745 - Ran tape clean cartridge, and this cleared the orange light on the
161746 - tape drive.
161747 - ..
161748 - Launched Novaback and checked the log of the backup that was run
161749 - using tape #03, while picking up the car.
161750 -
161751 - It says......
161752 -
161753 - The operation has stopped because an error has occurred while
161754 - reading or writing data which the drive cannot correct.
161755 -
161756 - The tape is damaged or the drive is faulty. Call the tape drive
161757 - supplier helpline.
161758 -
161759 - The tape is from a faulty batch or the tape drive is faulty:
161760 -
161761 - 1. Use a good tape to test the drive.
161762 - ..
161763 - 2. If the problem persists, call the tape drive supplier
161764 - helpline.
161765 -
161766 -
161767 - Tape 3 is therefore indicated as having a problem.
161768 -
161769 - [...below, tried tape #3 again, and it worked. ref SDS 0 K45M
161770 -
161771 - On 010216 tape 21 is reported as having a problem. ref SDS 19 9EYC
161772 -
161773 - Both tapes are essentially brand new - they have never been used.
161774 -
161775 - This is 2 tapes out of 21, or a 10% failure rate.
161776 -
161777 - Today, wanted to inventory tape 20, and switch back to tape #21 for
161778 - daily interim backups. This didn't work because tape #21 is still
161779 - failing. Got another message....
161780 -
161781 -
161782 - "Fatal error - backup terminated."
161783 -
161784 - ..
161785 - This operation using tape #21 caused the top light of the tape
161786 - drive to show orange, which indicates something.
161787 -
161788 - Ran tape clean cartridge again, this cleared the orange light on
161789 - the tape drive.
161790 -
161791 -
161792 -
161793 - ..
1618 -
1619 -
1620 - 2156
1621 -
162101 - Tried to do a full file backup on tape #03 again.
162102 -
162103 - This time it worked.
162104 -
162105 - 119K files 6.2 GB 145 MB/Min
162106 -
162107 - So, we seem to have erratic performance by the tape drive or by the
162108 - tapes. We have been getting about 198 MB/min, per the record on
162109 - 010214, ref SDS 18 0001, and later on 010311, ref SDS 23 0001, and now
162110 - it drops to 145 MB/min, plus the initial tape failure.
162111 - ..
162112 - How doe we know the backup on tape #3 is reliable, after it
162113 - caused CPU to freeze up, and was reported to be defective by Novaback?
162114 -
162115 - [On 010411 secondary full file using tape 16. ref SDS 25 0001
162116 -
162117 - [On 010423 Exabyte recommends turning hard disk power save feature
162118 - off during backup. ref SDS 26 GM3F
