101107 - FTP service. ref SDS 0 2936
101108 -

1014 - Progress
1015 -
101501 - This evening we are having the same problem trying to upload SDS files
101502 - for Wayne at DNRC in Montana, ref SDS 14 3085, that occurred last
101503 - week. ref SDS 12 0000
101504 -
101505 - On 980707 Bruce Newland said this problem would be solved by last
101506 - Friday. ref SDS 13 0000
101507 -
101508 - This evening I called Bruce's number. Raphael Diaz answered.
101509 -
101510 - Raphael said he is the manager of Technical Services for JPS.
101511 -
101512 - I asked Raphael if Josh Speer notified him to follow up on a 980629
101513 - telecon. ref SDS 7 2305
101514 -
101515 - Raphael said he does not recall this matter.
101516 -
101517 - He will have someone call me back in 15 minutes to optimize the
101518 - settings for ws_ftp pro.
101519 -

1016 -
1017 -

1019 -
101901 - Configure Local System for FTP Operations
101902 -
101903 - Follow up ref SDS 6 0659.
101904 -
101905 - Talked to Pat. He offered following suggestions to optimize local
101906 - computer configuration for FTP operations.
101907 -
101908 - We opened...
101909 -
101910 - My Computer
101911 -
101912 - Selected Ports, Com1
101913 -
101914 - Properties
101915 -
101916 - Port Settings
101917 -
101918 - Set Bits per Second to 115000
101919 -
101920 - Changed Flow Control from Xon Xoff, to Hardware
101921 -
101922 - Pat feels this will improve FTP operations and HTTP.
101923 -
101924 - It did not improve FTP. We tried the spec to upload the stuff for
101925 - Wayne, and it crashed after 12K.
101926 -
101927 - We finally got a message:
101928 -
101929 - Receive error. Blocking call cancelled!
101930 -
101931 - Pat asked me to run winipcfg, which returns a list that includes the
101932 - temporary IP address for this transmissionl.
101933 -
101934 - Start
101935 -
101936 - Run
101937 -
101938 - winipcfg
101939 -
101940 - This shows the following IP: 209 142 25 70
101941 -
101942 - Pat asked me to hold on while he investigates further.
101943 -
101944 - He feels our connection is bad. There are 17 jumps to get to the
101945 - Sacramento server.
101946 -
101947 - I asked if we could try making a direct connection to the server in
101948 - Sacramento, to bypass the Oakland Hub.
101949 -
101950 - Pat said to...
101951 -
101952 - Change from 415 376 0023
101953 -
101954 - ...to...
101955 -
101956 - 916 231 0023
101957 -
101958 - This line was busy. We tried it several times and could not get
101959 - connected. Pat suggested trying a different number...
101960 -
101961 - 866 0023
101962 -
101963 - When we tried this number we get a line busy message.
101964 -
101965 - After a few tries, we got connected.
101966 -
101967 - This is a direct connection to the server in Sacramento. However,
101968 - the transfer hung again after 10K.
101969 -
101970 - ..
101971 - Tip to Re-try Logon when Server Hangs
101972 -
101973 - Pat said that if we keep the current session open, and open
101974 - another session of the Ws_ftp program, then whatever was causing
101975 - the hang up in the prior route, will be bypassed in the second
101976 - session. He feels this improves chances of a successful server
101977 - setup.
101978 -
101979 -
101980 - We did a tracert welchco.com and found there only 6 jumps to reach
101981 - the server in Sacramento. Pat said the line...
101982 -
101983 - 5 185 ms 137 ms 134 ms GRF.jps.net [209.63.114.130]
101984 -
101985 - ...indicates that the route still goes through the JPS Stockton
101986 - facilities.
101987 -
101988 - ..
101989 -
101990 - Pat said that all JPS access for FTP goes through Stockton and this is
101991 - a weak link in the system. Routing through Stockton identifies the
101992 - customer and determining which temporary IP address to use.
101993 -
101994 - Pat said that this Wednesday, JPS will complete work on upgrading the
101995 - Stockton equipment to improve performance by a factor of 10. He
101996 - expects all improvements will be completed by Friday.
101997 -
101998 - Since Bruce Newland was told that these same improvements would be
101999 - complete by last Friday. ref SDS 13 1499, I asked Pat if there is an
102000 - alternate way to upload until JPS completes the improvements.
102001 -
102002 - Pat asked me to hold on while he inquires.
102003 -
102004 -
102005 -
1021 -
1022 -
1023 - 2200 JPS back
1024 -
102401 - Pat came back and apologized for the long delay.
102402 -
102403 - He asked me to log onto FTP operation using our regular number.
102404 -
102405 - I changed the dialupnetworking properties to our regular number.
102406 -
102407 - I dialed in and the system intially returned a busy signal.
102408 -
102409 - We eventually got logged in.
102410 -
102411 - The system hung during the sequence of setting
102412 -
102413 - We tried again, and got logged into the Server.
102414 -
102415 - We launched the upload for the DNRC SDS program update.
102416 -
102417 - The system hung after uploading 18K of the e.exe file which is 123K.
102418 -
102419 - Pat asked me to hold on.
102420 -
102421 - While holding we got following message:
102422 -
102423 - This program has performed an illegal operation
102424 - and will be shut down.
102425 -
102426 - If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
102427 -
102428 - Pat came back on-line and said he asked the System Administrator to
102429 - re-boot our server. He said it will take about seven (7) minutes for
102430 - it to come back on-line.
102431 -
102432 - Pat that the error message we got that the program performed an
102433 - illegal operation and will be shut down, was caused by the server
102434 - being booted.
102435 -
102436 - Pat came back and asked me to FTP to the site again.
102437 -
102438 - We were able to log on.
102439 -
102440 - Initially, the transfer of the e: sd 01 directory to server sd 01
102441 - transferred only 8K of 122K for e.exe.
102442 -
102443 - We started over and transferred e.exe separately.
102444 -
102445 - This worked. It took about 4 hours to transfer one file.
102446 -
102447 - Pat said that after this Friday, when the Stockton equipment is
102448 - updated, JPS will be able to provide the service it agreed to provide
102449 - in the Welch contract process.
102450 -
102451 - I asked if there is a way to avoid Stockton, since it is unreliable?
102452 -
102453 - Pat said JPS does not have another route.
102454 -
102455 - I asked if there is anything further Welch can do to assist JPS in
102456 - providing the service we need (explained on 980625, ref SDS 6 1448)
102457 - and expected to receive in entering our agreement with JPS on 980309.
102458 - ref SDS 2 6713
102459 -
102460 - Pat said there is nothing further Welch can do.
102461 -
102462 - He is hopeful JPS will have a solution by 980717.
