0809 - Summary/Objective
0810 -
081001 - Follow up ref SDS 10 0000, ref SDS 9 0000.
081002 -
081003 - Continued to encounter failed FTP transfers. Called JPS and was told
081004 - the problem is that routing from our phone to the JPS server in
081005 - Sacramento is too complex.
081006 -
081007 - [On 980707 was advised routing will be streamlined. ref SDS 11

0813 - Progress
0814 -
081401 - I tried to upload updated records to Web site. It continues to
081402 - crash. I tried three times, and the thing times out before the
081403 - upload completes.
081404 -
081405 - Called Bruce Newland, per his letter received on 980630, ref SDS 9
081406 - 1777, which said to contact him about further problems. ref DRP 3
081407 - 4351
081408 -
081409 - Advised Bruce of my letter ref DIP 4 0000 submitted on 980701. ref SDS
081410 - 10 0000 that explains results of transferring Welch account to NT
081411 - server have not met promised service improvement.
081412 -
081413 - Advised Bruce that our service seems no better on the NT server than
081414 - it was on the prior Unix server.
081415 -
081416 - Bruce asked me to run the following command from a DOS prompt:
081417 -
081418 - tracert welchco.com
081419 - ..
081420 - This is a trace evaluation. It produced 12 lines showing
081421 - transmission information in milliseconds.
081422 -
081423 - Bruce interpreted the information as indicating we need to be on
081424 - another server.
081425 -
081426 - He asked why we are on an NT server.
081427 -
081428 - I explained the discussion with Lance on 980625 who recommended that
081429 - we switch to the NT server to improve performance. ref SDS 5 2528
081430 -
081431 - Bruce requested my phone number.
081432 -
081433 - He will investigate and call me back in about 10 mintues.
081434 -
081435 -
081436 -
081437 - ..
0815 -
0816 -
0817 - 1216 Bruce called back
0818 -
081801 - Bruce thinks the problem is caused by routing through the Internet
081802 - to reach the JPS servers.
081803 -
081804 - Bruce indicated that Welch access to the server could be configured in
081805 - a way that bypasses extensive Internet routing reflected by the 12
081806 - lines from the tracert command, above. ref SDS 0 1276 He seemed to
081807 - indicate that there is a direct route from Stockton to Sacramento,
081808 - that provides better service than the 12 routes that our system
081809 - requires to reach the server in Sacramento.
081810 -
081811 - Bruce said the person he wants to review this matter is in a meeting.
081812 - When that person calls Bruce back, a decision can be made on changing
081813 - the JPS configuration for the Welch account. Bruce advised this will
081814 - reduce the upload time in half and should reduce time-outs we are
081815 - encountering.
081816 -
081817 -
0819 -
0820 -
0821 - 1520 called Bruce back
0822 -
082201 - Bruce said the person he thinks is responsible for modifying or
082202 - evaluating Bruce's analysis that this is a "routing" problem, is still
082203 - in meetings.
082204 -
082205 - I asked if that person's assistant or supervisor can be contacted for
082206 - action to avoid further delay, since we have been unable to upload
082207 - anything since OA 1030 this morning.
082208 -
082209 - Bruce offered to give me the name of his boss to contact. He feels
082210 - his boss can assist the person who is unavailable.
082211 -
082212 - I asked Bruce if he feels comfortable visiting with his boss and
082213 - explaining that JPS has a customer with an apparant "routing" problem,
082214 - and that JPS has called on the customer to make changes that have
082215 - required the customer to expend considerable time. This has not
082216 - solved the problem of enabling JPS to meet its commitment to provide
082217 - FTP service.
082218 -
082219 - Bruce said he is an information gatherer and facilitator, but does not
082220 - have direct responsbility for implementing solutions. He will visit
082221 - with his boss to inquire about how to expedite the solution he feels
082222 - may work, in light of the unavailability of the person who has been
082223 - tied up in meetings.
082224 -
082225 - Bruce said he will call me back on the results of meeting with his
082226 - boss.
082227 -
082228 - [On 980707 called Bruce and he advised that JPS is upgrading the
082229 - lines from the Oakland hub, to their Sacramento servers and this is
082230 - expected to provide more direct routing that will improve FTP
082231 - service. ref SDS 11 0000]
