- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 21 0000, ref SDS 18 0000.
-
- For some reason unzip failed on Wayne's computer. This evening Morris
- indicated the cause may be due to a filename longer than 8 char in the
- zip file. I could not find this problem. Uploaded the files in their
- regular directories. Sent Wayne a letter with instructions on how to
- download. ref SDS 0 7489
-
- Submitted ref DIT 1 0000 linked to this record for instructions.
-
- Note: the actual date of the updated files was 980714, because I
- sent the stuff the next day.
-
- [On 980728 sent another update to include some corrections and
- improvements. ref SDS 23 0000]
-
- [On 980729 received letter from Wayne that the "save" operation, in
- the code for the update sent on 980713, failed. ref SDS 24 0000]
-
- [On 980730 Wayne solved zu problem by getting a newer version from

- Pkunzip failing to install SDS program update on Wayne's W95 Computer
-
- Early this morning, I uploaded another SDS program update for Wayne.
- I used CPU #10 in Concord which is running W98, a beta version.
-
- Wayne sent an email back saying that he downloaded the files from the
- Web site but when he tried to unzip them, the operating system or the
- pkunzip program returned a message saying the DOS versions are
- incompatible.
-
- The last update was on 980421. ref SDS 5 0000 It and all previous
- updates have been successful.
-
-
-
- ..
- Re-submitted SDS Program Update - It Failed to Unzip on Wayne's Sys
-
- Since I received Wayne's email in San Francisco, I zipped up another
- set on CPU #8, which is running W95, and sent them via email.
-
- He got them, but sent an email oa 1215 saying that unzip failed.
-
- Seems like Wayne mentioned that he got a new computer about that same
- time, or maybe later. So it is possible his system needs to be
- configured to accomodate prior versions of DOS.
-
- I called Wayne. He ran the ver command at a DOS prompt and got a
- slightly different number from the on my computer in San Francisco.
-
- This indicates a setting in his system configuration, or on my
- computer has been established inadvertantly, as part of something
- else, that is blocking the normal operation of pkunzip. We checked
- the date and size of his file, and it was okay.
-
- Another possibility is that his computer has a virus that got on his
- system since the previous update in April.
-
- ..
-
- I sent him another copy of the pkunzip program, after testing it on
- my system. He got the program file, but it also failed.
-
- It appears that we received the current version of pkzip and pkunzip
- on 941219. ref SDS 1 0000 The date of the files we are using is a
- little later, but the sizes are the same. I think the dates are
- different because I changed the name to z and zu.

- Solution - send update without zipping
-
- There are very few files that actually need to be updated on Wayne's
- computer.
-
- The last update was on 980428, as recorded in the record for 980421.
- ref SDS 5 0000
-
- [On 980729 received letter from Wayne that the "save" operation, in
- the code for the update sent on 980713, failed. ref SDS 24 0000]
-
- I zipped the files for the period from 980428 to today for following
- directories...
-
- c: sd 01
- c: sd 03
- h: sd 05
-
- I deleted the existing files in these directories on e: and then
- unzipped the update files to the e: drive.
-
- I then uploaded these drives to the Web server in the appropriate
- directories.
-
- ..
- Wayne can download from these directories directly to his computer,
- as follows:
-
- ..
- Web Server Wayne's Computer
- ----------------
- 01 04 c: 01 04
- sd 01 c: sd 01
- sd 03 c: sd 03
- sd 04 h: sd 04
- sd 05 h: sd 05
-
- Wayne need not download the files in 01 04, since they are
- development files. There are a lot of them because I made a design
- change to the macro assembler routine that required putting the
- filename in all of these files. It may take 20 minutes to download
- the files in 01 04. If Wayne does not have time to download them
- now, it can be done at a later time

- Filenames Longer than 8 Characters Causes Problem Wayne is Having
-
- He said pkunzip can return the message Wayne encountered, if there is
- a file in the zip file that has a filename longer than 8 characters
- or if a file extension is longer than 3 characters.
-
- I checked and did not find any instances of that occurring. We did
- have a file in the Help directories that had an htm extension, but I
- deleted it the other day, so it is not clear that it could be the
- cause of the problem Wayne had. Morover it was only in the hs.zip
- file, and so should not have caused a problem with cs.zip.
-
- Think I will try to send Wayne some separate packages to see if we
- can isolate where the failure is occurring.
-
- Actually, seems like Wayne tried to unzip hs.zip and that also
- failed.
