0405 - Summary/Objective
0406 -
040601 - Alternate Keyboards Okay
040602 - Computer/BIOS Problem
040603 -
040604 - I found out today working on CPU #5 with one of the new keyboards I
040605 - got for DNRC, ref SDS 12 that F11 and F12 work okay. This means the
040606 - problem is not with the keyboard, but rather is with the cpu.
040607 -
040609 - ..
040610 - ..
040611 - Probably Not BIOS
040612 -
040613 - One of the difficulties with this scenerio is that CPU #2 which IP
040614 - Micro upgraded for Torno America, ref SDS 9, and on which F11 and F12
040615 - do not work, ref SDS 10 evidently has the same AMI BIOS that CPU #6
040616 - has, but F11 and F12 function properly.
040618 - ..
040619 - Advised Morris of above findings. He said he had pretty much
040620 - concluded the same thing.
040622 - ..
040623 - I will call Northgate on Monday to try to get some clues about what
040624 - causes F11 and F12 not to work.

211001 - ..
211002 - Feel Good Management Enables Deniability to Avoid Accountability
211003 -
211004 - We did not address this directly, because I did not want to make the
211005 - discussion uncomfortable following telecon on 911221 about mounting
211006 - problems that required downsizing the firm when executives in
211007 - accounting and markeing "cooked the books." ref SDS 4 6632
211009 - ..
211010 - A few days earlier Morris advanced a common theory of "Feel Good
211011 - Management" on 911123, ref SDS 3 1331, that is distinguished from the
211012 - Welch Management method of adding "intelligence" to information to
211013 - organize, analyse and align daily work with objectives, requirements
211014 - and commitments. ref SDS 3 4930
211016 - ..
211017 - Apart from concern there is not enough time to create a record in
211018 - order to understand daily working information from communication and
211019 - getting things done, there are two objections to organizational memory
211020 - that provides "intelligence" to improve earnings....
211021 - ..
211022 - 1. Concern about accountability from legal discovery of
211023 - internal disagreements about policy and decision making.
211025 - ..
211026 - 2. Social contraint to avoid embarrassing people by pointing out
211027 - errors and ommissions, reported on 920110, ref SDS 8 0884,
211028 - that everyone loves to have for external management, requested
211029 - on 880815.
211030 -
211031 - [On 960920 USACE requested reports on "hiccups" at progress
211032 - meetings by contractor.
211034 - ..
211035 - One can only wonder about the extent to which desire for deniability
211036 - to avoid accountability caused failure of projects that led to the
211037 - recent downsizing of Chips and many other companies now occurring in
211038 - the wider economy. Eventually covered up problems, overlooked
211039 - mistakes and missed opportunities, implode the organization. The
211040 - tragedy is that people grasp this occurring, but cultural inertia
211041 - prevents proactive problem handling under the excuse that good
211042 - management is overkill, as Morris noted on 890809, ref SDS 2 0880, and
211043 - advanced earlier by Tudor Engineers on 890324. ref SDS 1 LZ5F
211044 -
211045 - [On 921127 Morris recognized that inconsequential details turn
211046 - out to cause huge problems, but organizational culture that fears
211047 - intelligence because it brings accountability, as well as credit
211048 - is overwhelming. ref SDS 14 0674
211050 - ..
211051 - [On 001207 too many people having too many problems cause
211052 - productivity, earnings and stock prices to go decline.
211053 - ref SDS 19 V54M
211054 - ..
211055 - I wonder if companies who suffer losses and people who lose
211056 - their jobs would prefer the effort to spend a week or so learning to
211057 - work more efficiently and accurately? I wonder too, if people might
211058 - prefer the pain (usually simply embarrassemnt) of "discovering" their
211059 - mistakes at a time when corrective action can be taken with minimal
211060 - effort, cost and time, rather than allow a situation to develop where
211061 - recovery is not possible?
211062 -
211063 - It seems to me the problem is one of belief?
211065 - ..
211066 - The answer may be no!
211068 - ..
211069 - Biological Rejection of Eternal Vigilence
211070 -
211071 - Constant exposure to mistakes is emotionally burdensome.
211072 -
211073 - People need to feel good about themselves, so it may be better to
211074 - ignore mistakes and hope we can withstand the impact that surfaces
211075 - later, in the same way people seek to avoid unpleasantness, and
211076 - put it off. The Vietnam war is an example, ref SDS 16 8840.
211078 - ..
211079 - We may be aware that people are suffering terribly in a distant
211080 - land, but are able to accept that awareness with a balancing
211081 - belief that such condition is warranted by particular facts and
211082 - principles. To actually see the suffering and agony every night
211083 - and hear about it constantly, seems to become too much for the
211084 - conscious mind to bear, absent a direct threat, and so people say
211085 - "no more," even though the justification is unchanged.
211086 -
211087 - [Analysis on 950712. ref SDS 17 6922]
211089 - ..

211092 - ..
211093 - [On 950417 Vietnam war shows difficulty accepting cost of
211094 - small remedies to avoid big problems. ref SDS 16 8840]
211096 - ..
211097 - [On 951031 hiring psychologists to help people cope with

2609 -
2611 - ..
261101 - Morris feels endorsements are not adequate to convince people they
261102 - can make more money with SDS.
261104 - ..
261105 - He feels the key is getting good reviews in computer magazines.
261106 -
261107 - The people we want do not read computer magazines.
261108 -
261109 - We want people who are worried about their company not making
261110 - enough money, and wondering what can be done about it by way
261111 - improving management productivity, per above? ref SDS 0 4567
261113 - ..
261114 - In any case, how do we obtain favorable reviews in computer
261115 - magazines?
261116 - ..
261117 - The program has to be easy enough with "familiar" pull
261118 - down menus that are intuitive. If you have something that is
261119 - not intuitive, then this cannot be brought to others because
261120 - these reviewers will get frustrated and write bad things about
261121 - the product.
261123 - ..
261124 - If this is the only way then it seems unlikely that the
261125 - alphabet or arithmatic or any other major intellectual advance
261126 - can come into being.
