- 6. Millie grew up in Chicago, a year younger than sister Dorothy,
- and older than twin brothers Frank and Richard, and 5 years
- older than Bob. Millie's strong character formed enduring
- relationships, shown by lifelong friend Marilyn from grade
- school. She took her brother Bob into her home, when he was
- still in high school, because their mother died early at age
- 42. Parting from Ron Sr after 27 years, he remained in
- Millie's heart for the next 30 years, sharing lives of their
- children and grandchildren, now nearly all grown into citizens
- of the world. Dear friends Peggy beginning in 1975, and Janna
- in 1995, were continuously in Millie's life, and at her side at
- the end. Thanks to Pam, Marilyn still in Chicago spoke to
- Millie, along with others at a distance saying tearful
- good-byes.
- ..
- 7. Millie bragged that her Polish peasant stock, "strong like
- bull," helped meet difficult challenges. Her pioneer spirit
- led the wave of modern women in the mid-50s. She raised a
- family, managed her home, social life, and career. Millie's
- beauty and charm were balanced by honor, integrity, prudence,
- adventure, and a keen interest in the world and politics. She
- read widely and voraciously, and loved going to the movies. A
- striking personality of calm reserve, and respect for others
- made Millie forceful and delightful.

-
- Everybody loves Millie!
- ..
- 9. She was loved at home (see Valentine's Day letter on 960214
- 0636. ref SDS 1 4K5P), by a large family, many friends,
- neighbors, on the job, and in recent years by a terrific team
- of doctors and nurses who sustained Millie with care and
- devotion. Fellow patients loved Millie, including at the
- Wellness Community Center in Walnut Creek.

- Millie modeling her new dress presented below. ref SDS 0
- NM4F
- ..
- 10. Millie's skills on the job, talent with people, and infectious
- power to lift spirits shines through in her boss' annual
- performance review at Lillick and Charles (later Nixon &
- Peabody)...
- ..
- "I am writing this down so if I ever get run over by a truck, I
- want the world to know wonderful you are!"
-
-
-
- ..
- 11. Millie was an athlete. She had exceptional balance, timing,
- and hand-eye coordination, combined with determination for
- excellence. During the 1960s, while in Chicago, she and
- husband Ron teamed to win state badminton tournaments. Millie
- won individual championships, as well. Moving to San Francisco
- in the 1970s, she excelled at tennis. One rainy day at the
- Golden Gateway tennis club, everyone stopped playing to avoid
- falling on wet courts. Then it hailed. Millie said: "Lets
- keep playing, because no one will bump us." We played a whole
- set with hail pounding the court.
- ..
- 12. Millie took up running in the 80s. That's how we met in 1980
- -- running along the Embacadero in San Francisco. In 1973, I
- fell 40 feet into a pump station, and missed by inches
- splattering on equipment at the bottom. Odds of survival were
- 1 in 1000. Odds of me meeting someone like Millie, however,
- were 1 in 1,000,000; so it was a miracle surviving to run into
- Millie, and somehow inspire her love and devotion. One year,
- Millie injured her foot on a run out to Fort Point beneath the
- Golden Gate Bridge, about 12 miles round trip; so we switched
- to biking across the bridge into Sausalito, and then caught the
- Ferry and watched the sun set going back to the Golden Gateway
- Center. That was our home for 15 years, on the 16th floor
- overlooking the bay in downtown San Francisco. We biked to St
- Helena and stopped all along the way up and back for wine
- tasting, about a 50 mile trip. Our last bike ride was some 20
- miles out to the Cliff House and down highway 1 along the
- ocean. Returning was a "tricky" adventure getting up enough
- speed on the downhills to peddal up the hills on Bush Street
- during rush hour, and timing the lights to avoid stopping. We
- made it with a few close calls; but, then gave up biking rather
- than risk running out of luck. On other rides I was hit by a
- cars and flipped off the bike riding through Fisherman's Wharf,
- and again in Sausalito.
- ..
- [On 100807 1300 memorial services many spoke of Millie's
- amazng talents and character, ref SDS 34 KM9F, making her a
- great "prize" which she alone could award, so being chosen
- her partner was a great honor, and an equal privilege
- living with Millie 24/7 for 30 years. ref SDS 34 MY6H
- ..
- 13. Millie loved her commute to work taking the elevator to the 3rd
- floor, walking across a foot-bridge to the Embacadero Center,
- and taking the elevator to the 17th floor. Coming home for
- lunch was a delight. Sometimes Millie hosted elegant lucheons
- for friends at the office. She once managed to fit 50 people
- into the apartment celebrating the 50th anniversary for the San
- Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. From the 16th floor balcony, you
- could almost reach out and touch spectacular explosions of
- light from fireworks sent skyward from barges under the bridge
- less than a quarter mile away.
- ..
- 14. Just weeks ago, Benilda and Chris, friends still from the
- office years ago, brought lunch and set an elegant table
- celebrating enduring love for Millie...
-
-
- ..
- 15. In 1983, Ross, by then at IBM, got us a discount to buy IBM's
- first personal computer. Over the next 30 years, this led to
- seminal ideas and tools for saving lives, time, and money, but
- without commercial success. New ideas take time to refine and
- catch on -- years, decades, even centuries. Millie made a
- judgement to support this effort. She alone has given POIMS,
- Knowledge Management, Communication Metrics a chance to take
- root, while Microsoft, IBM, HP, DOD, Harvard, Columbia,
- Stanford... everyone else gave up, reported on 070126,
- ref SDS 3 QH8L Millie's doctors later said that "yoemans work"
- providing deliberation in a "well ordered record" aided her
- survival beyond belief, reported on 090213, ref SDS 5 FZ4H
- Since "belief" is hard to transfer, time will tell if others
- benefit from Millie's lone vigil that nurtured toil long enough
- to one day bear fruit, and redeem her belief. ref OF 1 1116
- While the future is uncertain, I was lucky and blessed beyond
- measure to have Millie's boundless love.
- ..

- [On 100813 0133 at the moment the "sky has fallen"; yet,
- Millie remains a powerfully moving force that will somehow
- see me through. ref SDS 37 IX4P
- ..
- 16. In about 1985, Ross, took us to Yosemite. Arriving at night,
- we struggled in the dark to find a place to sleep. Yet,
- finally, high in the mountains looking up into the night sky
- from sleeping bags on the ground was overwhelming.
- Unfathomable stars lit up the heavans compared to our lives at
- sea level in San Francisco. Next morning, a park ranger on
- horseback scooted us from the make-shift camp next to a sign
- saying "No Camping!" That day, we hiked straight up 3-miles to
- Yosemite Falls. The guys ran ahead, and then stopped to rest.
- Millie, ever the sure and steady athlete, walked past smiling
- and said "Coming boys?" Ross remembered Millie in a letter to
- his son Hutch, reported on 041028 1151. ref SDS 2 EY4T
- ..
- 17. In the 90s, Millie moved to Concord, closer to her children,
- Ron and Pam nearby in Clayton with their spouses Kim and Bill.
- She enjoyed seeing the grandchildren grow - Stephanie and Amy,
- and Nolan. Millie liked the drive 100 miles or so to Grass
- Valley, visiting her youngest son, Steve, and his wife Lilly,
- as their children Amanda, Matthew and Emily grew into young
- adults.
- ..
- 18. In Concord, Mil met her friend Janna, both living in the Cowell
- Terrace complex. They began hiking the trails at Lafayette
- reservoir, working out in the gym, enjoying social life...
-
-
- ..
- 19. The clock ticked into the 21st century, and struck Millie with
- cancer. She was blessed with support of friends and her
- children. Ron, Pam, and Steve, all living near with growing
- families and careers pitched in to facilitate great care from
- Doctor Johnson and his assistant Arlette at Kaiser. Over the
- years, Millie's care changed course many times. As cancer
- progressed, Kaiser collaborated with Doctor Rugo and her team
- at UCSF. Millie worked hard to be a good partner coordinating
- comprehensive care for nearly 10 years. The doctor eventually
- despaired because Millie survived much longer than expected, so
- Kaiser ran out of treatments. One day the doctor was crying in
- explaining that communication failed with email and telephone
- to arrange Millie's prescribed care at UCSF in time to be
- effective. ref SDS 8 4F6I Millie smiled and said...
- ..
- 20. "I am peasant stock strong like bull!
-
- Doctor Johnson, none of us will get out of this alive. Do the
- best you can, and leave the rest to God." - reported on 090515
- 1140. ref SDS 7 657K
-
- [On 100731 1343 Doctor Johnson called with condolences on
- Millie's memoriam, noting how beautiful Millie always
- looked despite pain and suffering from delay getting
- prescribed care. ref SDS 12 UH6I
- ..
- [On 100927 1152 report hectic schedule at Kaiser doctor
- still running around like "chicken with its head cut off."
- ref SDS 41 GT5N
- ..
- 21. Throughout, Millie remained active into her 70s hiking and
- running at Lafayette Reservoir...
-
-
- ..
- 22. She worked out regularly 4-times a week at the gym doing
- aerobics, and traveled many times to Canyon Ranch in Arizona,
- with daughter Pam, and friends at the gym to extend her health
- and exercise regimen...
-
-
- ..
- [On 100807 1300 several of Millie's friends from the
- gym and Canyon Ranch spa excursions related personal
- stories of their life with Millie. ref SDS 34 IV35
- ..
- 23. One day, Millie reported back and neck pain. Doctor Johnson
- hurriedly ordered a battery of complex tests, then smiled and
- canceled everything, when Millie said that Pam took her on a
- 25-mile bike ride the day before...
-
-
- ..
- 24. The doctor recalled recommending exercise, but noted how
- extraordinary for a 70 year old cancer patient, adding that few
- 20 year olds do 25-mile bike rides.
- ..
- 25. Even when weakened by cancer during the 8th relapse, at age 73,
- Millie followed doctor's orders to exercise. Though the mind
- was willing, she fell in January 2009, while working out at the
- gym, and severely dislocated her shoulder causing excruciating
- pain. The shoulder improved during several months recovering
- from the 8th relapse. Millie tried her best to resume workouts
- at the gym, and hiking at Lafayette reservoir. This became
- difficult with delay getting treatment in time to be effective
- relieving weakness and fatigue caused by cancer.
- ..
- 26. Millie's respect for people drove insistence on punctuality;
- yet, manners and decency accomodated others. She planned ahead
- to arrive on time at Kaiser, then played dominos waiting for
- the doctor to arrive 20, 40, 90 minutes late. When the doctor
- peeked into the examination room and said "Just 10 more
- minutes," Millie would reply... "Don't rush, I'm winning!"
- Delay starting meetings did not disrupt recovery, because
- Doctor Johnson gave Millie all the time required for
- comprehensive care in the examination room, at least 40 minutes
- and sometimes 2 hours managing expanding complications.
- ..
- 27. Over 10 years, Millie had 72 major changes in her care,
- including 17 different treatments, 11 relapses (reported on
- 090213, ref SDS 5 AC6G), and coincidentally 11 trips to the
- Emergency Room for life-ending threats. She was notified 12
- times to get her affairs in order to die in months. Doctor
- Johnson often called Millie "amazing" and "unique," like a
- "medical miracle," e.g., on 090325 0830. ref SDS 6 P39M
- Millie took everything in stride. Never complained, and did
- her best to get things done, while recovering in the
- hospital...
-
-
- ..
- [On 111005 Steve Jobs, CEO Apple Computer, died after 7
- year battle with cancer. ref SDS 43 I45H
- ..
- 28. Millie radiated optimism for a better future, essential for
- treating cancer as a "chronic disease," planned by Doctor
- Johnson at Kaiser beginning on 080829, shown in case study on
- 090213. ref SDS 5 PT3N In 2007, she told Doctor Rugo at UCSF
- Cancer Center of hopes for recovery to hike 7-miles up Mt
- Diablo, which she had done twice before getting cancer, and
- thus show that cancer need not be a death sentence. We
- eventually made it to Deer Flat, half-way to the top of Mt
- Diablo.
-
- [On 100801 1642 Millie's children notified their
- mother demonstrated cancer can be treated as a
- "chronic disease" to extend survival and quality of
- life by orders of magnitude, which at this time is
- beyond reach of those who know, and beyond imagination

- she still counseled and comforted others through wrenching
