Ross Notifies Hutch about Analysis of Choosing Education to Prepare
Medical Career Education Choices Evaluate Desirability Demographics

-
- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 8 0000, ref SDS 7 0000.
-
- Received ref DRT 1 0001 a copy of a letter from Ross to Hutch, which
- transmits the letter to Ross yesterday, ref DIP 2 0001, that related
- analysis of choosing a career in health care.
- ..
- Ross's letter to Hutch says...
-
- 1. You may remember meeting Rod when we lived in Concord. He came
- with us to several of your Pop Warner football games and was
- there when Stu fell on the bleachers and gashed open his
- forehead and needed stitches. Rod was also with Tavo and me
- when we hiked to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite. ref DRT 1
- 0001
- ..
- Ross' point about remembering offers useful perspective for Hutch as a
- student in college whose "job" is to learn. Accurate memory is an
- important part of "reasoning" that people use to learn, which is
- driven primarily by understanding chronology, reported on 900319.
- ref SDS 1 1323 This makes technology very useful for remembering
- chronology that makes reasoning effective, as discussed in POIMS
- explaining "precision access." ref OF 6 KH8J
- ..
- [On 050526 suggested that at a convenient time Ross discuss
- "remembering" with Hutch. ref SDS 12 I54K
- ..
- Another dimension of remembering is the use of reminders and prompts,
- explained in NWO. ref OF 12 RP5J In this case, Ross mentions the trip
- to Yosemite which provides a prompt for applying the method of
- "remembering" in POIMS that applies situational awareness.
- ..
- Using this prompt, also, called "keywords," "subjects," "categories,"
- "topics," etc., yields a record of a trip to Yosemite on 940916, when
- we climbed Half Dome. ref SDS 2 0001
- ..
- The record on 940916 has a touching account of Ross helping his dad,
- who had suffered a stroke. It, also, shows Ross has insightful
- perspective on marketing that usefulness is not a factor in computer
- sales, ref SDS 2 8209, supported years later by a report that
- manufacturers strive to improve computers for playing games.
- ref SDS 5 4486
- ..
- The record the next day explains the rigor of climbing the trail to
- Half Dome. ref SDS 3 0001 However, there is no indication that Tavo
- was part of this trip, suggesting there must have another trip when
- Tavo was with us.
- ..
- Eureka!!
- ..
- There is a link in the record on 940917 to a record the following year
- on 950916. Clicking on that link shows Tavo came along on that
- occassion. ref SDS 4 0001 This reflects how the mind clicks on links
- to discover chronology, though often incorrectly; and, that technology
- strengthens accuracy to remember chronology for reasoning and
- learning.
- ..
- Ross continues...
-
- 2. That was the time that Tavo laid down on the trail and was
- certain he was going to die from exhaustion so I had to leave
- him and make the final climb to the peak solo. Rod stayed
- farther back down the trail to make sure we would be rescued if
- we didn't make it back down. ref DRT 1 LS6F
- ..
- Review of the record on 950916 indicates that Tavo made a gallant
- effort, and came close to reaching the peak at Half Dome. Ross's
- memory today of my efforts 10 years ago can be described as
- constructive and charitable, since on that occassion I was a total
- wimp out (got a blister and turned back). ref SDS 4 NM76
- ..
- Ross continues...
-
- 3. As you can see from the note, Rod is currently investing a
- great deal of time and emotion providing support to the woman
- he loves who is battling cancer. Her name is Millie and you
- may also remember meeting her. She is a wonderful woman and is
- a great compliment to Rod's life. ref DRT 1 JS6K
- ..
- Ross refers to the letter yesterday explaining Mil's progress
- recovering from cancer, including misdiagnosis of IBC. ref SDS 8 6V5U
- ..
- A good perspective on Millie, is our earlier trip to Yosemite, when
- the three of us hiked up Yosemite Falls. This was in the 80s before
- Hutch was born, and before SDS was on the scene, so we have to go by
- memory. On that occassion, Ross and I had run ahead demonstrating we
- were in shape from running the hills in San Francisco, e.g., Hays
- street was a real killer. In any case, we stopped to rest and admire
- the spectacular views on the Yosemite trail. A few minutes later,
- Millie came hiking up the trail with a full backpack. She walked past
- us continuing up the trail, smiling and saying...
-
- Coming boys???
- ..
- She was never fast, but always steady, as seen from playing tennis --
- Millie is not spectacular but consistant and usually a winner.
-
- [On 100731 2221 memoriam for Millie remembered hiking Yosemite
- trail with Ross. ref SDS 13 WL5F

- 4. What you may not realize is that Rod played a significant role
- in my development and was an excellent father figure during my
- formative teenage years. I have frankly tried to use my
- experience with Rod as an example of how to be a good dad to
- you and Stu. Rod got me ready for high school football. Rod
- got us the Suzuki RM185 we motocrossed. Rod gave us the
- confidence to be ourselves and not get too wrapped up in the
- whole peer pressure trap. ref DRT 1 SS7G
-
- [On 100916 2019 Ross passed along a paper Stu is presenting
- for an assignment in college at USC, and describes Rod as a

- 5. The real point here is that Rod is really in a position to
- provide you, Stu and me with insight and wisdom about life
- events that we cannot get from anywhere else. He's also pretty
- well rounded as you can see from his reference to the Sox and
- Steinbrenner needing pitching. Rod was a star wrestler and
- football player in high school and college, he served in the
- Army in Vietnam, he started his own business and grew it into a
- very large and successful company at an early age, he taught
- himself programming and currently runs a software company that
- is about to sign Boeing as one of it's major clients. In short
- he's a brilliant guy that gets things done on his terms.

- 6. All of this is just supporting data that validates Rod's input.
- If you read his comments on the medical/health care profession
- and juxtapose his views and experience against your current
- desire to follow a career path in medicine you need to be aware
- of these points. You've got the intelligence, drive and god
- given talent to be a great doctor. Don't follow that path so
- that you can finance a hobby to race old German sports cars.
- Do it so you can make a difference. Those folks at Yale that
- kept using the word "Passion" were only half full of crap. You
- only get one chance on earth to do your best. ref DRT 1 CT9H
- ..
- Ross' charge to his son to consider a career in health care cites the
- letter yesterday that analyses compounding stress in medical practice
- due to demographic trends toward an aging population. ref SDS 8 6W6S
-
- [On 050517 sent copy to Ross with the idea of sharing with
- Hutch a letter to PhD student with assistance preparing a
- doctorial thesis on cognitive overhead. ref SDS 11 JJ4M

- 7. Rod - I'm absolutely game for a return trip to Yosemite. I'll
- start the glucosamine treatments now so I'm ready! Please give
- our best to Millie and know that she is in all of our
- prayers... and thanks for all that you have done for me and my
