- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 47 0000. ref SDS 45 0000.
-
- Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Ross this morning asking for input on deal
- shaping up with Jerry Nord at CSG, and saying...
-
- 1. There is a call planned for this afternoon from Jerry Nord at
- CSG offering to participate in the SDS effort, and it may lead
- to the kind of scenario you and I discussed on 030406.
- ref SDS 35 PS6I
- ..
- 2. At that time we considered how to locate a channel within IBM to
- consider SDS for selling a "solution," etc. That effort died,
- but recently Jerry has offered ideas that deserve some
- attention. ref DIT 1 RB6J After talking to Jerry on 030602, I
- called you to get some input. ref SDS 43 0001
- ..
- 3. You planned to call back in 10 minutes, then got distracted.
- Since this is the second or third time this has occurred, I
- guess some kind of an issue has developed that impedes
- communication. ref DIT 1 Z97G There was a hint in your letter
- on 030428 saying something about don't send a link to explain
- background on Snowden. ref SDS 37 916L
-
- [...below, Ross recalls forgetting to call back. ref SDS 0
- UI9K
- ..
- 4. A science fiction movie released in the 1950s continues to be
- broadcast from time-to-time on television, perhaps because there
- is a larger point, much like children's nursery rhymes, e.g.,
- genie in the bottle, Hansel and Gretle, ant and the grasshopper,
- humpty dumpty. Won't bother here to go into lessons for adults
- from children's nursery rhymes, but the 1950s science fiction
- movie may be of interest -- see if you remember. ref DIT 1 C48F
- ..
- 5. Space ship lands, but rather than blow things up, they take over
- by growing oversized pea "pods" that replace people. Everybody
- looks the same, talks the same, they continue in there jobs
- doing and saying the same things, but now they are a vegetable
- so the spark is gone from their life, maybe because sex is no
- longer in the picture. Everyone in the audience is really
- scared, even though there is no hint of violence in the movie.
- At that time, I would have been between 10 and 15, depending
- upon when the movie was released, and I remember being quite
- disturbed, along with everyone else, seeing a family carry a pod
- into their child's room, because the story had shown that when
- someone goes to sleep, they simply wake up as an alien pod
- person, with their humanity gone. ref DIT 1 K48O
- ..
- 6. The movie ends, with a guy escaping from town to warn the
- authorities, but they are looking at each other in disbelief,
- thinking this guy is a nut. Then a call comes into headquarters
- from an exasperated police officer saying "Man you won't believe
- this, but there is an awful accident on the highway involving a
- lot of cars and a big truck full of huge pea "pods. What should
- we do?" The movie ends with the suggestion that this threat was
- taken seriously and so got solved. ref DIT 1 S44J
-
- [...below, Ross was driving the truck. ref SDS 0 BL9L
- ..
- 7. The past few years I have been reminded of this movie observing
- over and over people, who have championed using computers to
- think, remember and communicate, along the lines of SDS, but
- then give up, because they won't click links, nor get help to
- experience benefits of converting information into knowledge, as
- listed on 000812. ref SDS 25 659F Last week or the week before
- I had a meeting with Pat Lincoln at SRI in Menlo Park. The gist
- of the discussion was that Pat has expended his energy chasing
- money to support a project like SDS, which at SRI they call
- OHS/DKR, per launch meeting on 000324. ref SDS 5 5880 I have
- been after Pat to garner support at SRI for a Knowledge
- Management Lab, because experience seems to be showing that KM
- is more of a research effort for overcoming resistance to saving
- time and money, by growing a culture of knowledge, blah, blah,
- blah. ref DIT 1 T55I Pat has supported SDS, since a meeting on
- 000725. ref SDS 7 0050 an example is his letter on 010111,
- ref SDS 11 3X4I, and later he sponsored a meeting with the CEO
- on 010122. ref SDS 12 LX6H
- ..
- 8. Moreover, the purpose of the recent meeting two weeks ago was to
- review a draft endorsement for SDS dated 030417, strengthening
- the letter Pat issued last year on 020729; so, nominally, Pat is
- a strong advocate for SDS and more generally of KM, ref DIT 1
- 6F3J, as shown by the draft endorsement. ref OF 1 0001
- ..
- 9. Of interest here are Pat's comments, during the meeting, that,
- in effect he has given up on advancing KM. In other words, the
- problem set out in the draft endorsement that delays progress,
- and which the endorsement strives to solve, has engulfed Pat, as
- reported on 030527, ref SDS 41 XX6M, i.e., he went to sleep and
- woke up a "pod" person. ref DIT 1 AH4I I am saying this with
- some humor, because later in the discussion, Pat raked me over
- the coals for not having installed SDS on his computer last
- year, when we discussed him doing a pilot test. ref SDS 41 YR5M
- He indicated during the meeting that he wants to become the Com
- Manager for SRI's CEO, relating that Curt gets mad when people
- don't remember what happens in meetings, and so presumably
- people are not taking the follow up action Curt thinks he has in
- mind. Pat feels that using SDS will let him solve the problem,
- and was only concerned about how to maintain confidentiality of
- the record. ref SDS 41 QE9O Curt had put the kibosh on an
- initiative in 2001 when Pat recommended that SRI hire me to do
- Com Metrics for SRI executive meetings. Curt told Pat at that
- time, according to Pat, that the executive team would rebel if
- Curt approved using SDS. ref SDS 15 E688 So, what concerned Pat
- last week is how to give Curt control over what is published on
- the Internet. It turns out that "control" is a core component
- of SDS support for "command and control" of the record, as
- explained in POIMS. ref OF 6 1113 I explained that nothing needs
- to be published on the Internet. We used SDS for years before
- the Internet came along, and only added capability for the
- Internet in 1998.
- ..
- 10. This record suggests a mere misperception turned people, anxious
- to benefit from good management, into "pods" who fear the light
- of knowledge more than the darkness of ignorance, as foretold by
- the Legend of Prometheus, which you and Hutch reviewed for a
- school project, reported on 991108. ref SDS 4 4355 Curt and Pat
- both thought that SDS records are created on the Internet and
- are a creature of the Internet, and so Curt naturally worried
- about public disclosure of everything said in an executive
- meeting, as Pat reported on 010522. ref SDS 15 E688 This
- perception was not apparent to me, because creating content on
- the Internet for daily management is not a good idea.
- Never-the-less it was the dominant idea in Curt's mind and
- evidently in Pat's mind, too, perhaps because the only SDS
- content they had seen was on the Internet, and perhaps, as well,
- because everyone else trying to develop Knowledge Management
- these days has wrapped their arms around the notion of
- "collaboration" and this is translated into technologies for
- creating content to share on the Internet, as explained in
- POIMS. ref OF 3 X16L Pat noted during our meeting last week
- that he knows I can write a public record for private meetings
- that is useful without disclosing sensitive information, but
- Curt doesn't know this because he has no experience. So we
- wasted 2 years because of a mistaken perception that SDS is like
- the tools other people are trying to create. ref DIT 1 6A6M
- ..
- 11. The long and short of this is that Pat seems interested in using
- SDS, but is discouraged about promoting KM, per se, at this
- time. So I am working to help him get started gaining
- experience using SDS at SRI, as we did with Gary at
- Aerospace company. In fact the Aerospace company experience gave Pat confidence that
- he can learn to use SDS. ref DIT 1 FG9I
- ..
- 12. This brings me to you. One of the most frequent complaints
- about using SDS work product is links. Won't bother to give you
- a link on this, an example is Dave Snowden's letter on 020920,
- ref SDS 28 5Y8I, but you can imagine when I got your letter the
- other day on 030428 saying don't send a link, ref SDS 37 916L,
- this made me wonder about another "pod" problem. ref DIT 1 HG4F
- ..
- 13. I would love to have a discussion on using links for a resource
- to expand span of attention, checking accuracy and understanding
- context, when helpful. This powerful new asset of added help
- does not impose a liability, requirement, nor a duty to open
- links. ref OF 6 4079 The opportunity to drive a car does not
- impede those who like exercise and have plenty of time from
- walking to the store. So, too, a car that permits driving 60,
- 70, 80, 90, MPH does not force people to drive at full speed;
- but, rather permits exercising judgement to drive according to
- conditions. Openning SDS links, similarly requires "judicious
- review" to decide on openning links based on conditions, as
- related on 990419. ref SDS 2 FY6F and ref SDS 2 0M3L However,
- this discussion has been deferred due to your heavy schedule.

- 14. More importantly, want to engage your expertise on issues of
- business development in relation to ideas presented the other
- day by Jerry Nord at CSG on supporting SDS development. This
- would not be an IBM level effort, but it is a start, and the
- issue I am wondering about what terms and conditions to impose

- 6. Again, sorry about the links. Sometimes links help and
- sometimes they are confusing like using "skill based routing,"
- which entails guessing which button to press on the telephone to
- get support. Unlike using pressing buttons on the telephone, If
- you get lost in SDS links, call and we can step through stuff to
- aid orientation. When a record seems confusing, it can mean the
- writer did a poor job, and so signals to steer clear of the
- effort. It can also mean the issues are complex and so require
- greater attention, what Grove calls "study," in his book on

- supposed to convert information into knowledge, not people into
