- Discussion
-
- Gary said he is working on somthing today and wants to link into my
- records. He is getting an error message.
- ..
- I explained I made an improvement to the program a month or so ago to
- save an SDS when a link is added, and did not recognize at the time
- that SDS is designed to support multiple Users working together in
- collaboration by preventing anyone from saving another user's records.
- I discoverd this issue later on 030308 and changed the code so that
- when linking to another user's records the new save feature will not
- work. To test this...
-
- Here is a link to Gary's record on 030116 that uses an anchor he
- has already created. ref SDS 3 0001
- ..
- Trying to link to the same record, however, where there is not
- already an anchor available, returns an error message, because it
- launches a "save" function that kicks out, and so preserves
- ownership and control of the record.

- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Gary saying....
-
- 1. We discussed fixing the Diary index when it is missing entries
- on 030119, but I didn't get that record published. ref DRT 1
- 0001
- ..
- 2. The record contains:
-
- Fixing records that should be there but aren't should be even
- simpler since some variation on F2 to save should work, but
- there are some incantations that need to be done in order to
- set up the record. Rod is working on what those incantations
- are and whether the process can be simplified. ref DRT 1 RE5M
- ..
- First, the description of this problem does not ring any bells. In
- other words, if a record is missing, then the only remedy is to
- restore it from a backup. SDS records are backed up everyday, and so
- can be restored, and on my system are backuped to a tape drive once a
- month. This means there are several chances to recover a record that
- may have gotten inadvertantly deleted. Since this seems obvious, it
- seems like Gary is describing a different problem, and I am blanking
- out on what is really needed.
- ..
- [On 030319 there were two problems; one was an SDS program issue
- that prevented saving a record. ref SDS 12 533K The second
- problem was solved by using F2 to save the record which updates
- the pointers. ref SDS 12 586F
- ..
- Gary's reference to 030119 was helpful. On 030119 Gary asked about
- eliminating pointers to records that have been deleted, ref SDS 4
- OM3G, and in some cases cause duplicate entries in reports, as further
- explained in that record. ref SDS 4 S560
- ..
- The record on 030119 explains SDS record structure, ref SDS 4 S588,
- and lists steps for clearing the problem Gary reported at that time.
- ref SDS 4 S636
- ..
- Gary continues....
-
- 3. I ran into the problem today, and when time permits, a
- description of the fixup process would be helpful. ref DRT 1
- PF6K
- ..
- Submitted ref DIT 1 UY6N linked to the record on 030119 that may
- solve the problem. ref SDS 4 S636
-
- [On 030319 received letter from Gary clarifying scope of the
- problem. ref SDS 12 XT9K
- ..
- 4. I clearly need to learn enough about the SDS index files to
- consider creating a program that can diagnose and repair any
- errors in them. We need to deal with that issue sooner or
- later, and probably better that I write something than bother
- you with the problem, which may run us into the memory problem
- again. ref DRT 1 MF7F
- ..
- There are lot of things we want to improve, beginning with the memory
- issue. Keeping fingers crossed.
