- Discussion
-
- Case Law, Regulation & PMBOK
-
- PMI publications should review case law and regulations for
- consistency with sound management practice in the PMBOK, for the
- reasons in my letter to Jim at ref DIP 1 9332.
-
- Jim said there are occassional reviews of the law in PMI
- publications. I explained these efforts typically do not consider
- how the cases align with sound management practice, and whether
- PMBOK needs to be adjusted, or whether the law should be adjusted.
-
- Jim will search for people to do this column. We considered a
- panel comprised of a few lawyers, public works executives, say
- from the Corps of Engineers, the Navy, private industry such as
- Bechtal, and the AGC. Jim is considering developing a research
- effort within acadamia. This section would be a good place to
- report on that research.
-
-
- Publicize Project World PMI Dinner Meeting
-
- I asked about his plans for an article on the Project World PMI dinner
- meeting last month, in PMI publications, ref SDS 7 line 84.
-
- There was discussion about what to publicize in light of analysis
- at ref SDS 7 line 144. Typically a PMI public event should be
- noticed in some form. I explained planning for the Asilomar event
- in July, to develop ideas on ISO, PMBOK and other standards not
- fully treated at the PMI Project World dinner meeting, ref SDS 7
- line 150.
-
- Jim asked if the PMI National Board is attending Asilomar? I
- indicated my understanding that the Natonal Board will attend, ref
- SDS 3 line 141.
-
- Publicize Asilomar Event
-
- Jim feels an appropriate way to publicize the Project World PMI
- dinner meeting would be via a notice of the Asilomar event,
- showing ISO and PMBOK ideas will be effectively presented. This
- notice in PMI publications could incorporate a survey to show the
- level of interest in attending so a budget can be set to make the
- event successful, per discussions with Bill DeHart on 951214.
- ref SDS 8 0003
-
- I expect within the next few weeks we can finalize this matter
- by submitting a formal request for publicity.
-
- [On 960125 called Bill DeHart about this at ref SDS 12 0001
-

- Risk Management Study Analysis, Author's Response
-
- I asked about the status of submitting the review of PMJ article on
- Risk Management to the author for comments, per discussion with Jim at
- the PMI dinner, ref SDS 7 line 426.
-
- Jim has submitted this analysis to the author. Sandy is following
- up to ensure response.
-
-
-
- Authority of Project Manager, PMP Certification
-
- We considered actions to take from the telecon on authority of project
- manager and impact on PMI, ref SDS 1 line 285 and implications for
- future of PMI ref SDS 1 line 532, discussed with Jim at the PMI dinner
- at Project World last month, ref SDS 7 line 436.
-
- [See follow up on PM as career choice, ref SDS 13 line 34.]
-
- Jim has read the diary, but not carefully. He asked to review it
- with me now on the phone. We did this, then discussed ways to
- advance wider analysis and action on the issue. Two ideas
- emerged:
-
- 1. Jim will consider simply incorporating the entire diary in
- a PMJ publication, with slight editing to reduce the size.
-
- This would introduce the format as a form of self- dialog
- to accomplish the POIMS objective of "thinking through
- writing."
-
- 2. Jim's other approach might be to extract the analysis and
- boil it down under an "Olde Curmudgion" type of by-line
- that uses conventional publication formatting. Under this
- scenario consideration is needed of making the
- recommendations more prominent.
-
- The advantage of this second approach is that it forces a
- second pass at thinking through the problems and approaches
- to resolve them.
-
-
- PMBOK & ISO 10006 Correlations
-
- We reviewed briefly the correlation between ISO 10006 and PMBOK, which
- is to be published in a month or so. Jim said a PMI committee is
- examining this matter.
-
- I will submit the analysis done at ref SDS 2 line 61, which was
- performed to support the NWO paper.
-
- Jim will consider the viability of incorporating a column on Diary
- analysis, per para 1 under "Authority of Project Manager," above.
-
-
- Jim asked for notes of our discussion today.
