1011 - Summary/Objective
1012 -
101201 - Follow up. ref SDS 16 0000.
101202 -
101203 - Made contact. He has read the material, but was not terribly
101204 - enthused, except he did submit it to others for review.
101205 -
101206 - Upon discussion, we will try to arrange a demo for E&Y in SF. He
101207 - needed another copy of the POIMS articles. Submitted via ref DIT 1
101208 - line 30, included these notes for background.
101209 -
101210 - Follow up
101211 -
101212 - Schedule to receive call by next Wednesday, 940914.

1015 - Progress
1016 -
101601 - Early this morning, Bud returned my call. His message asked me to
101602 - call him back tomorrow oa 1400 EST. I am not sure if he means today,
101603 - or tomorrow, which is Saturday.
101604 -
101605 - He said he was pleased I have followed up. He has been traveling
101606 - on an assignment, and then took some vacation. So today he is
101607 - returning calls.
101608 -
101609 - He probably called late last night, since he wants me to call him
101610 - today and not tomorrow.
101611 -
101612 - Talked to Joan. She said I can call oa 1400 today, which is 1100
101613 - our time. I gave her my number and said I expect to be in all day
101614 - today, so if Bud's schedule changes, he can call me anytime at his
101615 - convenience.
101616 -
101617 -
1017 -
1018 -
1019 - 1100 called Bud back
1020 -
102001 - Joan said Bud will call me right back. I said I have to leave in 20
102002 - minutes.
102003 -
102004 -
102005 -
1021 -
1022 -
1023 - 1110 Bud called back
1024 -
102401 - Followed up work at ref SDS 14 line 56, and my letter ref DIP 4 line
102402 - 30.
102403 -
102404 - What about a demonstration of SDS for E&Y in SF?
102405 -
102406 - See questions for Tom Davenport at ref SDS 12 line 61, and my review
102407 - of Tom's article at ref SDS 2 line 195.
102408 -
102409 -
102410 - Is Bud involved with the:
102411 -
102412 - The Information Revolution
102413 -
102414 -
102415 - ...advertised in Business Week, sponsored by E&Y, AT&T, Oracle
102416 - and Vanstar?
102417 -
102418 - This seems like another "Executive" seminar similar to what IBM
102419 - sponsored "Pathways to Growth" at ref SDS 8 line 89.
102420 -
102421 -
102422 - Bud said he is giving one of the presentations at this event.
102423 -
102424 -
102425 - Welch Present POIMS & SDS
102426 -
102427 - I said I would like to present POIMS; explain why the "Information
102428 - Revolution" will reduce productivity unless SDS is used to convert
102429 - information into "automated knowledge" as explained in the record
102430 - on 931008. ref SDS 1 9995.
102431 -
102432 - [Later I submitted review of Van Kasper's paper to Bud, since
102433 - it goes directly to his talk at their seminar. ref SDS 1 0000]
102434 -
102435 - Bud feels the POIMS material is a bit obtuse. He asked me to
102436 - explain what POIMS adds to existing systems? I suggested he review
102437 - the paper again and that we arrange for him to see a presentation
102438 - of SDS.
102439 -
102440 -
102441 - ..
102442 - Lotus Notes - Automating Management
102443 -
102444 - Bud said SDS sounds similar to Lotus Notes. He asked how SDS is
102445 - different from LN?
102446 -
102447 - I mentioned having examined Lotus Notes carefully (see for example
102448 - the analysis on 940519. ref SDS 3 0000).
102449 -
102450 - I asked Bud how much time each day he ses Lotus Notes?
102451 -
102452 - He said about twice a week (see review of LN at ref SDS 3 0000, and
102453 - comments by marketing reps at ref SDS 3 0770).
102454 -
102455 - [On 951011 IBM managers advise LN is used about 5% of a week.
102456 - ref SDS 17 1511]
102457 -
102458 - I explained usage is the key barometer of a program's ability to
102459 - improve management, ref SDS 5 3001. If it is used sparingly (e.g.,
102460 - twice a week), it is of very little value, per discussion on 940629
102461 - re Lou Gerstner at IBM, ref SDS 8 6772].
102462 -
102463 - SDS is a tool you use all day long every day because it leverages
102464 - human intellect, and (hopefully) managers are using their head all
102465 - day. SDS integrates the key ingredients of management, time and
102466 - information, with the management cycle:
102467 -
102468 -
102469 - Plan Perform
102470 -
102471 -
102472 - Report
102473 -
102474 -
102475 - Other programs like Lotus Notes, Agenda, Newton, et al, only
102476 - perform isolated tasks. The manager's mind remains burdened to
102477 - accomplish the integration, and that is the source of mistakes.
102478 - Even after figuring out the correct relationships, those under-
102479 - standings fade with time. Action items get lost in the shuffle,
102480 - and even when they are remembered, the reason for them is lost or
102481 - the knowledge needed to accomplish tasks quickly and correctly, is
102482 - no longer available. Human biology is too weak for the world it has
102483 - created for itself (see for example ref OF 1 line 625 and at ref OF
102484 - 2 line 484. SDS solves all of these problems, ref OF 2 line 522).
102485 -
102486 -
102487 - Bud has forwarded the SDS papers, to colleagues, but has not gotten a
102488 - response.
102489 -
102490 - E&Y invested in Knowledge Ware. It did not work out well; they are
102491 - not looking at making investments now of this type.
102492 -
102493 - In former assignments, he has developed management support technology.
102494 - I have the impression this was a mainframe type system.
102495 -
102496 - ..
102497 - Managers Discouraged by Technology
102498 -
102499 - Bud is a little discouraged about looking at technology. The stuff he
102500 - has seen previously, did not turn out to provide significant
102501 - productivity gains, relative to other solutions.
102502 -
102503 - Similar to Jake's concern at Sandia Labs, ref SDS 9 0001, and was
102504 - reflected in Tom Davenport's HBR article reviewed on 940510.
102505 - ref SDS 2 0730 Same challenge was discussed in the article on
102506 - "Enterprise Workflow" reviewed on 940522. ref SDS 4 7399
102507 -
102508 -
102509 - I pointed out that with anything "good" you have to "Kiss a lot of
102510 - frogs to find a prince."
102511 -
102512 - Lets evaluate SDS a step at a time.
102513 -
102514 - Do a demo for responsible people in SF, then if that turns out
102515 - reasonably well, figure out how to let Bud see an SDS demo.
102516 -
102517 -
102518 -
102519 - Schedule SDS Demo
102520 -
102521 - He wants me to fax the articles to him and he will arrange for
102522 - someone on the West Coast to see SDS, as a prelude to doing a demo
102523 - for him.
102524 -
102525 - fax 617 725 1522
102526 -
102527 - Did this via ref DIT 1 line 31. Millie sent the fax.
