0505 - Summary/Objective
0506 -
050601 - Jake called to follow up discussion at ref SDS 7 line 63. Scheduled
050602 - demonstration for this afternoon at his home. Did that, and loaned
050603 - the Toshiba notebook for him to experiment with SDS.
050604 -
050605 - Follow Up
050606 -
050607 - Jake will discuss with his boss tomorrow how to implement and evaluate
050608 - SDS for support of his new assignment. He can call Wayne Wetzel (406
050609 - 444 6722) about how long it takes to learn SDS.
050610 -
050611 - I will submit an example of how to use the "Information Highway" to
050612 - advantage to create some new knowledge and controllable action items.
050613 -
050614 - Followed up at ref SDS 8 line 40.

050616 -

0509 - Discussion
0510 -
051001 - Jake said he has read my letter ref DIP 1 line 20, submitted at
051002 - ref SDS 4 line 77, following up our work at Asilomar ref SDS 3 line
051003 - 198, which we discussed the other day at ref SDS 7 line 64.
051004 -
051005 - He feels his new assignment results in him having more information
051006 - that needs to be converted into knowledge, explained in POIMS theory
051007 - at ref OF 1 line 277, and so wants to see a demonstration of how SDS
051008 - does this.
051009 -
051010 - He has a DOS computer. I explained I would give him the program, if
051011 - would get a 486 computer with adequate capability to run SDS.
051012 -

0512 -
0513 - 1438 Visited Jake at his home
0514 -
051401 - Met Diane who was kind enough to offer the dining table where she had
051402 - a sewing project. Initially we set up the computer outside, but it
051403 - was too bright, so we moved things into the living room.
051404 -
051405 -
051406 - Jake's Assignment
051407 -
051408 - He is supporting a group of researchers to coordinate their work and
051409 - communications internally and externally. The full scope is not yet
051410 - established. He has a learning curve to absorb, and needs to work out
051411 - the duties and responsibilities with his boss and with the research-
051412 - ers.
051413 -
051414 -
051415 -
0515 -
0516 -
0517 - 1450 Demonstration
0518 -
051801 - Used notes of presentation to PG&E, ref SDS 5 line 46. Jake seemed to
051802 - appreciate how SDS implements the ideas in the POIMS paper, ref OF 1
051803 - line 42. He felt the demonstration was overwhelming.
051804 -
051805 - Management is Complex
051806 -
051807 - I explained this is because "management" is a complex craft, (see
051808 - see POIMS article p. 2 "Investing Intellectual Capital" ref OF 1
051809 - line 147) learned over a lifetime. To improve productivity,
051810 - automated management must integrate a wide range of "stuff" and so
051811 - it initially looks complex, per POIMS article p.6 ref OF 1 line
051812 - 605. In a short time it all falls into place, because managers are
051813 - already doing what SDS does, just not as fast or as accurately.
051814 -
051815 -
051816 - Writing a Letter
051817 -
051818 - We did a sample exercise of writing a letter by first creating the doc
051819 - log identification, which took 10 seconds. It was automatically
051820 - addressed, dated, subject was entered, salutation, signature block and
051821 - document ID were also entered, so writer need merely add References,
051822 - if any, and write the content.
051823 -
051824 -
051825 - Document Log
051826 -
051827 - We opened the Document Log and found the new letter was already
051828 - posted, showing who should respond, when and a description of the
051829 - letter.
051830 -
051831 -
051832 - Publications
051833 -
051834 - When we looked at the publications log, Jake recognized several of the
051835 - authors. He commented on needing to review an article about "Re-en-
051836 - gineering PM. I showed how to open the article on-line by double
051837 - clicking on the entry, and that the SDS record is opened for context
051838 - and analysis by double clicking on the date of the article.
051839 -
051840 - [I loaned him the notebook computer which has the same publica-
051841 - tions, so he can download any of these articles he needs and put
051842 - them on his computer at work, or print them for distribution.]
051843 -
051844 - Showed how to select publications based on "subject" content.
051845 -
051846 -
051847 - Implementation
051848 -
051849 - Jake said he is considering hiring part-time support to transition
051850 - into his new job. I recommended he consider using that budget with
051851 - other budget for management support, and automation to let me transi-
051852 - tion him into using SDS at Sandia Labs.
051853 -
051854 - I would work as his assistant for a few weeks to capture the record.
051855 - This would provide the support needed to define and support his tran-
051856 - sition, plus Sandia can evaluate SDS, and work out how it can be
051857 - applied in a research support setting. We reviewed a discussion with
051858 - Wayne Wetzel, Deputy Director at DNRC, that illustrates how this would
051859 - work, see ref SDS 1 line 123.
051860 -
051861 - Together we would develop the subject index for his new job. This
051862 - would result in defining its scope and duties, which needs to be
051863 - done. I would attend meetings and generate correspondence. He
051864 - would be able to use the SDS record, and gradually learn to create
051865 - it.
051866 -
051867 - Jake can call Wayne to discuss the time and effort required to
051868 - learn SDS, and the effectiveness of Welch support:
051869 -
051870 - 406 444 6722
051871 -
051872 -
051873 - Hardware
051874 -
051875 - I recommend SDS be run on a 486 computer, although it runs on an 8088,
051876 - a 286 or 386 system. It needs only 640 K ram. Should have at least
051877 - 50 MB free on the disk, so some of the Welch existing data base can be
051878 - installed as examples of how to write and apply the record. SDS takes
051879 - only 3 MB of disk space for installation. It should be run under
051880 - Windows or OS2, although it can run directly under DOS. It must have
051881 - a color monitor.
051882 -
051883 -
051884 - Jake is meeting with his boss tomorrow and will mention this idea. I
051885 - suggested he submit the POIMS and NWO... articles and the ideas we
051886 - discussed today.
