- approach CoDIAK (Concurrent Development, Application and

- notably the authority model vs the free-form mmodel of CBPP
- (Commons-Based Peer Production). I read the article with
- Fleabyte in mind (ref. Fleabyte: A Medium for Global Civics)
- and which is a form of DKR in the sense Doug Engelbart presents

- 9. Reflection 1. An important advantage of Wikipedia over printed
- encyclopedias is that it can more readily be updated.

- 10. Reflection 2. With Wikipedia why Fleabyte?
- ..
- 11. Reflection 3. Wikipedia would improve with including "purple

- ..
- 12. Reflection 4. People are living CBPPs.
- ..
- 13. Let me expand a little on Point 4. Our minds continually pick
- up entries from our environments and, hence, are living
- community-based productions (leaving out the word "peer" for a
- moment). And both models apply: authority model and free-form
- model. Upbringing, religious instruction, schools, academic
- and professional disciplines - these largely follow the
- authority model from imprinting on our minds. Chats and media,
- dreams, creating or inventing - these largely follow the
- free-flow model. And come to think of it, we live in a society
- where the authority model is dominant in our youth and is
- increasingly encroached upon by the free-form model.

-
- 14. This brings me to Doug's DKRs. Doug has been addressing himself
- mostly to DKRs used by organizations (the DKR as an
- organization's nervous system). In so doing he recognizes the
- value of expertise; actually he recognizes the value of
- blending different areas of expertise by having them work
- co-operatively and do so as to approach CoDIAK (Concurrent
- Development, Application and Integration of Knowledge). In
- this, he takes his DKR a step further than being an
- encyclopedia: he adds an orientaion toward developing and
- achieving an objective. In contrast, an encyclopedia is
- "objective-neutral."
- ..
- Objective-neutral summarizes common use of encyclopedia, based on
- experience doing school assignments, cited in POIMS. ref OF 6 4662
- ..
- Doug's DKR goals taking a step beyond "objective-neutral" to in fact
- developing and achieving objectives can be aided by examples to
- illustrate how a DKR relates to CODIAK with experts working
- cooperatively. Does the five (5) year record of communication among
- the OHS/DKR people, including Eugene Kim's collaboration web site
- represent goals for a DKR as explained by Henry?
- ..
- Henry continues...
-
- 15. Now going back to Fleabyte. Its DKR (if we can get this thing
- off the ground!) is one for society at large, something we
- hardly refer to as an organization (although, come to think of
- it, may well be regarded as an organization for those who like
- kibitzing). And it is a DKR that also seeks CoDIAK as the
- (unattainable) ideal. So, I have happily concluded that
- Fleabyte is more than an encyclopedia; it is objective
- oriented. This takes care of reflection 2.
- ..
- 16. Interestingly, both Doug and I talk of DKRs becoming a handbook
- or an encyclopedia. Thus what we perceive then is an
- encyclopedia with cultivated CoDIAK continually upgrading the
- encyclopedia toward more and more becoming effective in
- attaining an objective or set of objectives.
- ..
- What would Fleabyte do differently to move beyond current practice to
- achieve a DKR where experts work cooperatively to develop and achieve
- objectives? This question was proposed to Henry as a Fleabyte project
- for updating Doug's 1992 paper, in a letter to Henry and the circle of
- advocates on 050223. ref SDS 9 Y65W
- ..
- On 000824 Eric Armstrong wrote a letter to the OHS/DKR group reporting
- on a meeting with Doug Engelbart about the design and objectives of an
- OHS/DKR. Eric reported that Doug proposed the SDS design, ref SDS 1
- PU5N, which includes Summary/Objective that gives the record an action
- orientation, shown by this record, ref SDS 0 0001, rather than a mere
- reporting function, as Henry seems to suggest today. POIMS further
- explains the importance of technology that integrates thinking and
- doing. ref OF 3 2049 Eric's letter on 000824 was therefore cited as
- one of three (3) Henry should consider in evaluating progress on
- Doug's goals for a DKR in his 1992 paper. ref SDS 9 Y73P
