- for Communication Metrics based on a unit of measure for comprehension
- and accuracy, ref SDS 0 WK6V, based on Landauer's explanation that
- "meaning" is derived from assosication, and SDS can measure links that
- construct associations. ref SDS 0 WK5X This might make an interesting
- article for Fleabyte. ref SDS 0 RI6K

-
- 1. Gary's letter on January 18, shown below, seems very close to
- making an article for Fleabyte on a key part of transformation
- from information to a culture of knowledge. This touches on
- goals Henry presented in a letter on 050110 to support civic
- journalism with technology for augmented thinking. ref SDS 1

- ..
- 2. An idea that might be considered for addressing the thorny
- issue of quantifying metrics for cognition, and by extension
- communication metrics, is Gary's discussion of "understanding"
- related to "comprehension" (see again below) This metric may
- merge with accuracy as another derivative of linking that
- constructs associations between information people receive and
- needs people have, commonly described on the job as objectives,
- requirements and commitments.
- ..
- 3. For example, a call comes in saying our customer cannot meet
- payment commitments of $10M due on Monday. This might be
- comprehended in relation to a meeting yesterday where we
- committed to pay vendors $2M on Tuesday, and have a payroll of
- $5M due the following Friday. The mind would tend to
- associate, or comprehend, the new information in relation to
- prior commitments.
- ..
- 4. Tom Landauer proposes in his paper on Plato's Problem (LSA)
- that the meaning of "meaning" is resolved in daily life by
- associations people make, regardless of why. If people
- consistently associate "cat" with a small, fuzzy animal, four
- legs, and an independent personality, then that becomes what
- "cat" means.
- ..
- 5. Links in SDS work similarly. People construct associations
- between new information each day, with background on related
- events and to other instruments showing performance and
- alignment or departure from objectives, requirements and
- commitments. Therefore, one a measure of comprehension is the
- number of links that triangulate, and thus "weigh" the accuracy
- of understanding, discussed earlier on 950204....
-
- http://www.welchco.com/sd/08/00101/02/95/02/04/130359.HTM#8A4G
- ..
- 6. We might further measure "comprehension" by the number of
- headlines that summarize meaning in a record, and by the number
- of subjects that define contextual boundaries. It may turn out
- that the most we can say is that with no links, headlines nor
- subjects there is likely low comprehension of critical details in
- a complex record, and that a high number increases the chance of
- accurate understanding for taking appropriate action in time to
- be effective. In other words there no evident units of measure
- for accurate comprehension, however, one might develop a
- comprehension quotient as the sum of links, headlines and
- subjects divided by the total number of words, as at least
- indicating someone invested time for comprehension.
- ..
- 7. Some might say, "Hey, wait a minute. If I hear my customer is
- going to be late with a $10M payment that I need to meet
- obligations of $7M, then I don't need no links nor any of that
- metrics stuff to comprehend I gotta get everybody on the phone
- and work things out!"
- ..
- 8. It turns out, however, that while Fred is knocking heads together
- about getting his money, 4 or 5 collateral issues are falling
- through the cracks due to limited span of attention, in the
- absence of adding "metrics" to communication for concurrent
- discovery.
- ..
- 9. Another consideration for comprehension and understanding is
- permanence. One may well comprehend correlations, implications
- and nuance in the moment, but in a day, week, month, several
- years later adequate comprehension may not be recoverable in time
- to be effective, and indeed may be recalled incorrectly causing
- conflict, crisis and calamity. This aspect of comprehension
- further suggests value added of links, headlines and subjects for
- reconstructing meaning based on context.
- ..
- 10. In any event, appreciate that everybody is busy - Gary's letter
- just seems like an interesting stepping stone to bridge the two
- worlds problem we have been discussing on transformation to a
- culture of knowledge.
