- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 54 0000, ref SDS 49 0000.
-
- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Mary responding to the copy of the
- letter, ref DIP 5 0001, sent to Joe Ransdell on 000713. ref SDS 57
- 0616 She commends Joe's work. ref DRT 1 1539
-
- [On 000719 notified Joe about Mary's recommendation to work with
- him. ref SDS 60 1540
-
- [...sent copy of letter to Joe, to Mary, so she is up todate on
- these efforts.
-
- Mary explains she has not been able to respond to ref DIP 4 0001 on
- 000624, ref SDS 54 1534, due to family concerns, as noted in my letter
- to Joe on 000713. ref DIP 5 1596 She reports 5 new puppies are
- keeping her busy. So she has her hands full.
-
- Mary notes one reason she has not had time is that an adequate
- response would take time to sort out the issues and the confusions of
- current thinking in that realm of work. ref DRT 1 2368
-
- I have been working for years with a group that might interest you:
- the International Conceptual Structures community. They hold
- conferences every year (see this year's announcement for the one
- coming up in August, below). They have been developing many
- successful practical applications, based on Peirce's existential
- graphs and his pragmatism, but still do not grasp the fundamental
- issues adequately (I believe). ref DRT 1 0360
-
- So, far I have not seen anything from any source that indicates an
- understanding of "knowledge" or KM that might improve present
- practice, per analysis on 000106. ref SDS 10 1025 More recently on
- 000425 this seems to indicate that KM is a secret of SDS.
- ref SDS 28 0480
-
- Need an example of one or two issues, relative to POIMS
- explanation of Knowledge Management dilemma. ref OF 1 0561
-
- One might at least address the different perspectives between
- philosophy and cognitive science set out in my letter on 000624.
- ref DIP 4 1450
-
- The primary problem for AI, KR, and KM (as I see it) is that they do
- not benefit from crucial philosophical understanding of the problems
- they address, and struggle along "re-creating the wheel" (in very
- primitive form). Philosophers are certainly partly to blame for this,
- but it seems to be a modern fashion to assume that we can start from
- sratch on everything and hope to get somewhere (arrogant, to say the
- least). ref DRT 1 5456
-
- Need an example to illustrate her point.
- ..
- Another aspect of the challenge moving theory to practical
- application, according to Landauer, is that theory often evolves
- from using new technology in ways that were not expected or
- intended when the technology was created. In other words, people
- need experience doing things differently for awhile in order for
- the mind to identify a new path, see the record on 950710
- reviewing Tom's book "The Trouble with Computers." ref SDS 3 8303
-
- SDS may provide such an opportunity because it enables a starkly
- different set of procedures from traditional practice, as Joe
- discusses in his letter yesterday. ref SDS 59 3825
-
- Mary thinks Peirce's philosophy can help with basic understanding --
- before we launch into practical experiments that are not well
- conceived. Of course, we can try to continue to learn by trial and
- error but, surely, we can do better. ref DRT 1 3500
- ..
- Mary sounds a bit discouraged, possibly having tried to
- support efforts that apply her work, and meeting resistance, or
- ignorance and lack of imagination, similar to problem of people
- having given up trying to use technology to support daily
- management, discussed with Morris on 000706. ref SDS 56 1886
-
- On 000716 Joe Ransdell indicated the objective of the Welch work
- with SDS, POIMS and Communication Metrics, possibly more broadly,
- a general theory of Knowledge Management, has been tried as far
- back as the 17th century, without success. ref SDS 0 0001 He calls
- it an ambitious undertaking. ref SDS 58 7838
-
- The basic problem is lack of experience by technologists with a
- design that enables them to work differently long enough to
- understand and accept that the different process and form of tool,
- yields consistently better results than traditional tools and
- practice. Without such experience, philosophical explanations,
- however, well formed and researched, seem baseless and irrelevant.
- As stated above, the lucky break of key forces coming together in
- 1985 created SDS (reported 950204, ref SDS 2 4365), which, in
- turn, has yielded experience that forced awareness of patterns
- that required theoretical explanation. Thus, per Landauer,
- technology led theory. ref SDS 0 3721
-
- Now we are at the stage where theorists and other experts need to
- take a stronger role. Hopefully prior disappointments will not
- completely bar the way. But, if so, it supports Landauer's
- explanation of why progress is so sloooooooooow. One possible aid
- in moving forward, is that the experience that showed one person
- the possibility of a stronger knowledge capability, is now
- available for many people to experience in part. Theorists are
- helpful in drawing attention to this evidence, that is otherwise,
- like the fabled cricket, having too fun and making too much money
- to worry about what will happen when sunshine profits fade.
