0708 - Summary/Objective
0709 -
070901 - Followed up work at ref SDS 23 line 60. Reported on discussions with
070902 - Intel. Considered status of PMI Event Program Planning and
070903 - implications for PMI's future.
070904 -
070905 - Set meeting next Wednesday with Kwan Henmi. Bill will try to meet
070906 - with PG&E separately.

0713 -
071301 - Meeting with Intel
071302 -
071303 - Advised of preliminary results of discussion with Dave, ref SDS 23
071304 - line 65. The notes will be updated to Bill's computer in a few days
071305 - so he can assess it more carefully.
071306 -
071307 -
071308 -
071309 - I mentioned the conflict posed by the world's leading manufacturer of
071310 - computer chips and its employees using manual mangement methods,
071311 - contrary to their stated objective 5 years ago:
071312 -
071313 - "We sell a product to help everybody be more productive; but, we
071314 - still use the tools that we advocate everybody else abandon in
071315 - favor of using our products."
071316 -
071317 -
071318 - Objectives for Intel Meeting
071319 -
071320 - Bill asked about my objective in meeting with Intel today.
071321 -
071322 - I mentioned the discussion we had the other day at ref SDS 21 line
071323 - 86. Bill said he saw that record, but has not had time to consider
071324 - it carefully. I explained the following ideas:
071325 -
071326 - • In order to develop qualified speakers that will add value to
071327 - PMI events and improve professional skills of PMI membership,
071328 - we have to frame an important theme and develop a presentation
071329 - to give it life. If we tell potential speakers the Event
071330 - Program Planning Team is disbanded, this reduces enthusiasm to
071331 - contribute. The question arises, why are we meeting?
071332 -
071333 - • Many within PMI believe Intel has important information to
071334 - offer PMI because Intel produces key components of tools PMI
071335 - members use everyday and hope to one day use to greater
071336 - advantage, i.e., to improve personal and organizational
071337 - earnings by improving "management" productivity.
071338 -
071339 - • Dave Vannier is working on Intel's strategic plan to guide
071340 - Intel's future. Therefore, he seems especially well
071341 - positioned to comment on how Intel hopes to accomplish the
071342 - goals of PMI members to improve earnings by using Intel's
071343 - products more productively.
071344 -
071345 - • Dave Vannier stated he believes the theme for his proposed
071346 - presentation to PMI is critical to the success of the computer
071347 - industry and to Intel. He has expended considerable effort to
071348 - gain approval to address PMI, ref SDS 20 line 59. Intel's
071349 - management provided David with materials to support the
071350 - presentation, ref SDS 20 line 61, showing broader support for
071351 - the importance of the issue we have framed.
071352 -
071353 - Under this record, the best course is to develop the presentation
071354 - and inform PMI of the opportunity. PMI can then choose whether to
071355 - to hear from Intel and others on...
071356 -
071357 - Taking the Quantum Leap
071358 -
071359 - ...to effectively use automation to improve earnings, or they
071360 - can reject it in favor of something else.
071361 -
071362 -
071363 -
071364 - Costs/Benefits of Intel Presentation or Abandoning it
071365 -
071366 - Admittedly this course hold risks. If PMI decides not to hear from
071367 - Intel, then there is some potential harm to PMI's reputation. In this
071368 - case, David Vannier had never heard of PMI, so the harm to PMI seems
071369 - modest compared to the potential gain to the membership from making
071370 - progress toward the orginal goal. If PMI decides not to hear from
071371 - Intel, then Intel's work preparing a presentation on using automation
071372 - to improve management productivity, might be used in another setting,
071373 - as Bill and I considered the other day, ref SDS 21 line 96.
071374 -
071375 -
071376 -
071377 - Status of PMI NCC Event Planning Team
071378 -
071379 - I asked Bill to look at the background on the PMI Event Program
071380 - Planning, submitted to Linda and Ahmet at ref SDS 14 line 67,
071381 - following our meeting in Oakland in July. Ahmet may have been
071382 - startled and disappointed by implications from events that have
071383 - influenced team progress, for example at ref SDS 14 line 128. He may
071384 - have decided a new team, new goals and different strategy would be
071385 - less burdensome than using project management practices to improve
071386 - PMBOK management communications, as contemplated earlier ref SDS 13
071387 - line 174.
071388 -
071389 -
071390 -
071391 - PMI Future Viability
071392 -
071393 - Bill is concerned that if PMI NCC fails next year, as it did this
071394 - year, to offer a good event program, then the Chapter's reputation
071395 - will be harmed, as well as its ability to attract and hold membership.
071396 -
071397 - We considered the current growth PMI is experiencing where more and
071398 - more people are joining and taking the PMP exam. This reflects a
071399 - belief in the efficacy of PMI prescriptions. Is this well founded or
071400 - merely a momentary herd mentality that Project Management is the
071401 - current fad, as MBO, TQM and Reengineering each had their day in the
071402 - sun. As we say in the NWO paper, reality is ultimate metric. If PMI
071403 - fails to produce quality event programs, and if reported difficulties
071404 - PMPs are having performing actual projects, ref SDS 12 line 156, ref
071405 - SDS 7 line 260, is not addressed, ref SDS 7 line 578, then belief in
071406 - "Project Management" as a professional practice will wain, as reported
071407 - for TQM at Asilomar in 1994, ref SDS 2 line 86, and ref SDS 2 line
071408 - 145.
071409 -
071410 - Solving these concerns was a major impetus to the Event program theme
071411 - proposed for 1996, per ref SDS 14 line 67. I suggested Bill contact
071412 - Dan Ono about meeting to get his input to help guide the resolution of
071413 - these points. Bill said he has called Dan a number of times, but has
071414 - not heard back.
071415 -
071416 -
071417 - Meeting with PG&E and Kwan Henmi Architects
071418 -
071419 - I invited Bill to meet with Denis Henmi and I for lunch next
071420 - Wednesday, ref SDS 24 line 107. He is planning to visit with Chris
071421 - Snyder at PG&E on promoting an independent professional development
071422 - event, per our discussion at ref SDS 21 line 97. He indicated he was
071423 - thinking of meeting with Chris one on one. I concurred, and noted my
071424 - idea was that he could do this before or after meeting with Denis and
071425 - I.
