- 1. If time permits, please give me a call. The past few days have
- had constructive discussions with Morris on the prospects of
- sharing subject indexes. ref DIT 1 0001 Jack Park has been

- 3. Morris is having a hard time getting beyond the notion that all
- of the links in SDS records come from Rod's memory, and so
- there is no solution.
- ..
- Doug Engelbart commented on 060129 that prevailing paradigms prevent
- people from understanding principles of augmenting intelligence.

- 000221, ref SDS 2 M854, by merging ontologies, before
- developing a solution at the primary level.

- Can subject indexes be effectively shared before there is technology

- 5. The specific issue we are considering is whether to distribute
- Rod's subject index and SDS records as templates to start
- customers off with work product that demonstrates SDS
- functionality. I mentioned to Morris that you have not had a
- lot of success using my SI, and so this may suggest, "Hey,
- let's not burden people with a lot of stuff they will never
- use." On the other hand, there may be an approach where this
- can be presented usefully.

- way that everyone does not use Help to learn Microsoft

- 6. Morris points out that giving customers only the primary
- subject index will result in people creating a big mess that
- will not be useful to them, because it takes time to think
- about organization, and people are not used to allocating time
- for this function. I related some of our discussions where you
- have reported trouble finding details in the record because
- there wasn't time to create subjects nor to cross-reference,
- and because at the time information was created it seemed
- unlikely to be needed later, or something like that, and so the
- 8 steps are not fully performed. There is always a balance to
- strike between investing time now to save time, money, and
- lives later.

- 7. Thus, giving customers minimal support and giving lots of
- support are both ineffective. We also discussed making a film
- to take people through the process of creating organic subject
- structure. That is a bit unrealistic with budget constraints.

- 8. Morris wants a more detailed manual. There is a lot on subject
- indexing in the SDS online help manual. Morris points out that
- Microsoft has found that getting people to use online Help is a
- big challenge of subject indexing, because customers invariably
