- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 23 0000. ref SDS 22 0000.
-
- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Marsha following up her letter on 030310
- and our telecon on 030307 when she planned to review some of POIMS,
- ref SDS 22 VV5F, as shown in the letter on that date. ref DIP 2 676I
- ..
- Marsha says today....
-
- 1. This is just a quick check-in. I actually re-read the
- materials you sent in 1996, which I came across in my desk.
- It included NWO article as well. I showed them to Anabel (my
- landlady and cohort in Six Seconds) who teaches at the
- university level. ref DRT 1 0001
- ..
- On the one hand it is great that Marsha reviewed both POIMS and NWO;
- however, looking at old printed version was not the assignment.
- Wanted her to review the material online, since it has been expanded
- and refined since 1996, and online there is opportunity to experience
- the ideas in the material. Still, the fact that Marsha took time for
- this and engaged her colleague is very helpful.
- ..
- Marsha continues....
-
- A response we both had, surely influenced by our shared EQ and
- teaching bias, was that the role emotions play in memory and
- communication in general, is virtually ignored. If we look at
- face-to-face communication this is especially true, given that
- approx. 80% of communication there is non-verbal. Even words
- are interpreted differently based on our past experiences.
- The second item we noted was that it felt time consuming in
- all the "checking" for accuracy, etc. I realize our focus is
- more on live communication. ref DRT 1 4F6F
- ..
- The newer versions of POIMS and NWO make clear that emotions dominate
- communication and color intelligence.
- ..
- Marsha continues...
-
- 2. An interesting incident. Dr. Fred Luskin spoke at Notre Dame
- in Belmont last week. There were numerous miscommunications
- resulting in a Chronicle ad with the wrong date, a school
- receptionist giving the wrong time, etc. - even though all of
- this had been communicated in writing - no real interpretation
- needed when it is about times and dates! In talking about
- this with Fred, I learned that he has been on a book promotion
- tour this past year with his wife setting up all the speaking
- engagements. She triple-checked everything, sent written
- confirmations, etc. And the tour has still been fraught with
- mistakes - dates, times, locations, etc. Amazing! ref DRT 1
- HC7F
- ..
- The difficulty Dr. Luskin had with his schedule, even after writing
- everything down, reflects the fact that more writing without
- "intelligence" to organize, align, analyse, summarize and get feedback
- is not of much value. For example, Dave Vannier had problems, like
- Dr. Luskin, when Dave was a day late for his presentation at the
- Asilomar Conference in 1996. ref SDS 5 0032 People thought Dave had
- been in an automobile accident, reported on 960805, ref SDS 8 EU5J,
- but it turned out he just got mixed up handling documents even though
- everything had been "tripled" checked. ref SDS 6 N44M Same thing
- happened to Morris, reported on 960721. ref SDS 7 0576
- ..
- Problems Dr. Luskin, Dave and Morris encountered illustrated the
- challenge of Communication Metrics, discussed on 960721. ref SDS 7
- 0004
- ..
- 3. Got to go. Just wanted to give you a little feedback that may
- or may not fit. I do understand that what you have created
- has a different focus.
-
-
- ..
- Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Marsha saying....
-
- 1. Thanks very much for taking the time to review NWO, sharing
- these ideas with colleagues, ref SDS 0 QW5K, and for
- thoughtful feedback, ref DIT 1 0001, in your letter today.
- ref SDS 0 0001
- ..
- 2. On the merits, we are not far apart. POIMS proposes
- technology for a system of Communication Metrics that
- complements traditional methods by adding intelligence to
- information. ref DIT 1 AJ6G Face-to-face discussion and other
- traditional, stream-of-conscious forms of EQ are, and will
- remain, dominate in human life and enterprise. Take a brief
- look at a couple of paragraphs in POIMS on talking and
- listening. ref OF 5 24A7
- ..
- 3. The challenge is how to balance the emotional component of
- intelligence, recognizing that emotion is an essential and
- constant factor, ref DIT 1 EH7G, see for example NWO
- contrasting requirements for communication in the immediate
- sense of conversation, with different needs to maintain and
- expand understanding over the long-term, ref OF 6 4114; and
- further, another para in NWO discusses the role of emotion in
- communication. ref OF 6 7519 As well, POIMS recognizes that
- human memory is always charged by emotion, ref OF 5 2367, and
- so strives to strengthen understanding and follow up that aid
- listening, as discussed on 890809, ref SDS 1 CJ9J, and
- formalized later on March 27 1995 in a system of Communication
- Metrics. ref SDS 3 WO9P
- ..
- 4. Lets talk then about practical ways to foster a culture of
- knowledge that balances the role of emotion with the role of
- deliberation in applying intelligence and memory. ref DIT 1
- CW9M The challenge of a faster paced world necessarily urges
- spontaneous reaction that crowds out time for analysis to
- verify accuracy and expand span of attention, essential to
- recognize and remember critical details. In other words, the
- common sense idea of limited span of attention (i.e., I cannot
- think of everything at once!), ref OF 1 6221, presents a
- growing problem and an opportunity that can be addressed
- through transformation from a world obsessed with spontaneous
- information in constant meetings, calls and email to a culture
- of knowledge that adds intelligence support for continual
- learning through better understanding and follow up.
- ..
- 5. For example, your story today concerning Dr. Luskin where
- mistakes in writing occurred despite "triple checking"
- everything is telling. ref SDS 0 ES5O When rushed, mistakes
- go up even when written, because people do not have access to
- the record within the available time. ref DIT 1 QQ5H In that
- case, writing is not effective. Human intelligence requires a
- critical mass of integrated tasks working together to be
- effective. ref OF 3 2688 Just doing one or two or three of
- them creates an imbalance that causes failure. We see this
- from the technology revolution creating chronic information
- overload that posits an "Alice in Wonderland" world where
- everybody is saying "I'm late, I'm late... No time to say
- hello. Good-bye!" This new world order that shrinks time and
- distance creates a chronic problem: people do not have time to
- think, noted on 970910. ref SDS 11 3479
- ..
- 6. My thought is (bear with me), if there is not enough time to
- "think," and if thinking is the engine of civilization, then
- new tools and roles for thinking make sense for a system of
- Communication Metrics that invests time for triangulation that
- strengthens accuracy, ref OF 4 16EF, to reduce mistakes that
- occurred in publishing Dr. Luskin's speaking schedule,
- ref DIT 1 H55I, that cause errors in manufacturing products,
- and cause space shuttles to explode, as occurred recently on
- 030201.
- ..
- 7. Morris Jones noted in a letter on 010425 that a solution
- requires technology to help people put everything in the right
- place at the right time, ref SDS 12 EP7F, so that Dr. Luskin,
- his support team, and others can find the information they
- need within the time available to check things successfully.
- How then to accomplish Morris' idea? ref DIT 1 F66J
- ..
- 8. Maybe "continual learning" is a common bond between EQ and
- SDS, keeping in mind we are not trying to reach perfection,
- only significant improvement through a better balance between
- "thinking" (enabled by SDS) and "doing" (supported by EQ).
- ref DIT 1 J73K
- ..
- Will be interested in your ideas when time permits.
