-
- Accomplished one of the action items pending from the list on 000904.
- ref SDS 29 1Y6K Got Medit to create long filenames, but still
- cannot open long filenames correctly. Could not make progress on
- memory issue.
-
- [On 001003 sent letter to Morris thanking him for this effort, and
- setting out pending issues based on this record. ref SDS 40 0001

- Follow up ref SDS 29 0001, ref SDS 21 7842.
-
- Morris used documentation for Windows version of DOS, which he located
- on 000904, ref SDS 29 0001, to add capability to Medit for creating
- long string and lower case directories and filenames needed to fix the
- problem encountered on 000810. ref SDS 21 EHG6
-
- ..
- It took about 10 minutes to write the code, then another 2 - 3 hours
- were needed to debug the thing. Finally got it to work on Morris'
- computer running w98; but, it would not run under w2k on my computer.
- Morris did initial diagnostics and found that w2k is returning an
- Access Denied code. He said this means that w2k is a different
- operating system from w98, and so this feature will not run on w2k.
-
- He then got an idea and tried several solutions.
-
- About an hour later, he found a solution that enables Medit to address
- long filenames in upper and lower case for both w98 and w2k. Assume
- it works as well for w95, although we did not test.
-
- Only had time to accomplish this one objective today.
-
- ..
- The improvement to Medit uses a new command Morris created....
-
-
- savc
-
-
- ...that supplements savx, ref OF 6 R47G, to save and create
- directories, filenames and extensions in upper and lower case, and
- with strings longer than 8 positions.
-
- ..
- Morris extended the length of the path and filename from 40 to 60
- characters.
-
- Looks like we can create stuff, but still cannot open anything
- over 40 characters long, and have the path and filename process
- correctly.
-
- Doesn't this come up in Morris' other Medit program? Why arn't
- the DOS calls the same for both situations?
-
- In the course of the evening, I showed Morris the problem opening
- files in the Internet transfer directory. They now exceed 40
- characters because we moved the stuff from i: drive, to c: and this
- required several additional directory levels, that extend the lenght
- of the path to about 40. He noticed that Medit opens the long file,
- and only shows 40 characters instead of 43 in the example we tried.
-
- ..
- We discussed this, and I thought it was fixed by Morris extending the
- filename from 40 to 60 characters. We were so pleased to finally get
- this feature working, that we forgot to test the open file function.
-
- There may be another location in the Medit code that needs to be
- adjusted to complete this enhancement.
-

- record on 990912. ref SDS 2 9766
-
- On 000907 a letter to Morris asked if the new documentation he
- obtained to improve Medit by accessing long filenames in upper and
- lower case, per above, could, also, help solve the memory problem.

- ..
- Morris did a few quick diagnostics at the DOS prompt, and announced it
- showed that he does not have access to memory between 640K and 1MB.
-
- Similar problems occurred creating the savc command, which seemed
- to block progress, then further effort yielded an eventual
- solution. ref SDS 0 FC5I
