Subject:   SDS Support for Intel/CITRIS

Dear Morris,

This confirms our telephone call this past Monday on September 24, 2001 discussing an initiative proposed by John Deneen to seek consideration for using SDS to support Intel's involvement with CITRIS which seems to be a major research effort in technology that is sponsored by UC Berkeley, and has funding from industry and government.

On Tuesday, the day after you and I spoke, John submitted a letter with background that indicates Intel's VP of Research and Development, David Tennenhouse, is associated in some way with CITRIS. John indicated in a phone call on Monday that David has management responsibilities with respect to CITRIS, which could present an opportunity for using SDS to handle the complexities inherent in the CITRIS mandate. However, there is nothing evident in the documents John submitted showing David's role with CITRIS. Actually, James Demmel with UC Berkeley, is listed as an associate director of CITRIS.

I realize you may not be positioned to carry this idea forward to David. His background at DARPA shows potential to grasp the opportunity for using SDS to manage complex undertakings, like CITRIS, despite factors discussed on Monday that make it difficult to understand saving time and money using SDS.

Possible information to submit is the explanation on December 19, 2001 that summarizes how SDS improves management practice, as a supplement to the SDS Typical Day Scenario, which you reviewed favorably on April 25, 2001. Of course your own experience/assessment is likely the most critical factor, again, as discussed last Monday. If you should elect to endorse SDS, as requested in the letter on September 20, 2001, David could be a good target.

By copy I am notifying John of having passed along his idea, and suggesting that he coordinate directly with you on follow up.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
