Subject:   Doug's 1992 Paper, Para 7g Needs Clarification
History SDS Development

Dear Henry,

Thanks for clarifying in your letter on August 14, 2001 the scope of the EIC project you are considering for the Bootstrap e-journal. Review shows that para 7g on Explicitly Structured Documents in Doug's 1992 paper needs a broader explanation. It is a one or two sentence island in a long paper filled with integrated ideas on fostering intelligence capability.

There is a big advantage EIC offers under your leadership. SDS enables moving from the historical paradigm of "documents" to Knowledge Space. This requires content that has addressable context so that authors can assemble a web of connections that support their work in specific detail. As with all breakthroughs, we have to experiment to discover practical application, but you and Doug have at last taken a big first step.

Answering your kind comments, SDS was created from a thousand things that failed, a la Edison; although fortunately there was an insight fairly early in the game that has stood the test of time. Background is in the record on July 23, 2000 It comes up with a search on the Internet for "SDS background," so anyone can do an article on this subject.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
