Subject:   Ideas for Meeting at Intel on SDS with LANL

Dear Morris,

Sorry to hear in your letter today that your trip to Israel conflicts with Cliff's availability in the Bay Area.

This seems like a slightly elevated opportunity, because of the time and effort Cliff and his team have put into looking at SDS on the Internet. You are a priceless asset in many ways, but here, your experience with these kind of meetings where people are probing, hinting and searching for direction and advantage, is essential. Everyone in this KM thing is searching for the rosette stone, so care is needed in building relationships while keeping in mind that competition is likely the stronger motive in every setting, making first meetings pretty much a minefield of opportunity and risk.

What would you propose? Deferring the meeting with Cliff until you get back; going ahead on a limited agenda, and if things develop, do a second meeting at Intel?

You mentioned in your letter that "...something could be worked out, if you try," which sort of implies I need to do something as an incentive. I could baby sit one weekend, or clean up the yard. I can't teach the kids how to do a double back flip on the trampoline anymore, but I could give you the power of the microcosm by installing SDS on your computer, except you have not returned to that point of belief yet. I'm hoping that if I can bring others on board, this will eventually help us work together, as we did in the early years, but that remains to be seen. The real key to being a powerful force, which you mentioned the other day, is not so much the skills of the individuals, but the synergy that results from combining diverse skills and perspectives. That's the only way SDS got here.

For the immediate issue, Cliff wants to plan for some SDS review the week of May 21. Given the state of play, what do you suggest for this planning? Possibly you could touch base with Dave Vannier on whether he might be available and willing to sponsor the meeting. Dave said last April that the only question on SDS is "Where to take it from here?" So he has some interest in the project. This would give him an update that we are trying to take to Los Alamos.

A minor point, I was thinking of using the new notebook, but would like to connect my regular keyboard, since that provides the best illustration of the ergonomic advantages from doing all the SDS stuff as a single integrated process. Is there a way to connect a regular keyboard to the Sony notebooks?

Thanks for thinking about this.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
