0405 - Summary/Objective
0406 -
040601 - Followed up work at ref SDS 21 line 267.

040605 -
040606 - Flew to JWI, discussed Asilomar agenda and the results of the meeting
040607 - with Hank Hatch. Decided not to stay over, flew back this evening.

0410 - ..
041001 - Left apartment oa 1145. Caught 1200 BART train to Freemont.
041002 - Got off at Coliseum station. There was already a shuttle to the
041003 - airport, so my timing was perfect. If I had left the apartment any
041004 - later, I could have been 15 - 30 minutes late getting to the Coliseum
041005 - station.
041006 -
041007 - Arrived at Southwest terminal oa 1235. Checked in for both Bill and
041008 - I, but he has to show his ID when he arrives.
041009 -
041010 - Bill was late getting to the airport, actually just made the flight.
041011 -
041012 - At JWI, we got a Budget car rental. Initially, the attendant said we
041013 - did not have a reservation. Took them awhile to set us up, but
041014 - finally they found it. I was suprised they did not have the rental
041015 - details already set up, otherwise what is the point of the
041016 - coordination which Southwest claimed they would make, ref SDS 21 line
041017 - 332. After finally getting the rental forms prepared, the attendant
041018 - folded the documents and handed them to me. I unfolded the documents
041019 - and examined them for the rental rate, but could not figure out at
041020 - first glance the rate they were quoting, so I asked for an
041021 - explanation. The attendant pointed out the rate of $47.95 and asked
041022 - if that is higher than I was quoted. I said our regular rate is $37,
041023 - so he changed the documents to conform to the $37 rate.
041024 - ..
041025 - We finished our meeting oa 1810, and decided to fly back this
041026 - evening, since Hank could not meet for dinner at Embassy Suites, as
041027 - discussed the other day, ref SDS 21 line 233. Half way to the hotel,
041028 - we turned around and rushed back to the airport, but got lost.
041029 -
041030 - We saved the room rental, ref SDS 21 line 365.
041031 -
041032 - [See follow up at ref SDS 29 line 94.]
041033 -
041034 - We arrived back at the airport too late to catch the 1830 flight, so
041035 - we got our tickets adjusted to take the 2120 flight. The attendant
041036 - said the additional cost was $84, not 168, as reported in signing up
041037 - for the original tickets, ref SDS 21 line 302. However, it appears she
041038 - ment $84 apiece, so the total extra cost was actually $168 for both of
041039 - us.
041040 - ..
041041 - At Budget rental the charge for the rental was $62 or so. I
041042 - pointed out the rate was incorrect in failing to apply the change the
041043 - attendant made when we rented the car. Fortunately this was the same
041044 - person. He had moved from the counter in the airport where the rental
041045 - was initiated 2 hours earlier, to the garage counter where the car was
041046 - returned. So it was the same person. I pointed out his hand written
041047 - change in the rate. Initially, he simply deducted $10 from the $62
041048 - amount and said the charge is $52. I noted that the proper charge
041049 - should be closer to $48, since the base rental rate has taxes and
041050 - other percentages applied to it. He recalculated by hand and
041051 - determined the correct charge was about $48.
041052 -
041053 - We had dinner at the airport waiting the flight and discussed the
041054 - meeting with Hank.
041055 - ..
041056 - Had a pleasant flight home, visiting with a mother and her
041057 - daughter returning from a weekend at Disnyland.
041058 - ..
041059 - Bill drove me home.

SUBJECTS
Summary & Outline Agenda
Communication Engineer/Manager
Leadership Associate/Aid
Intel, David Vannier

1007 - ..
100701 - Follow up analysis of Asilomar agenda at ref SDS 27 line 104.
100702 -
100703 -
100704 - Leadership Associate
100705 -
100706 - Bill initially indicated that "Leadership Associate" which is
100707 - questioned in the analysis at ref SDS 27 line 192, is the
100708 - "Communication Manager" role indicated in the thesis. So this is a
100709 - new term supplementing the others Morris and I have considered
100710 - previously at ref SDS 12 line 933.
100711 -
100712 - An idea for including Hank Hatch might be that he can better
100713 - describe the value added of an aid based on the military
100714 - experience of using aids. He can then explain the concept of a
100715 - Vernon Walters "Leadership Associate" that Sherrill may have in
100716 - mind, based on the George Shultz report discussed with Hank at ref
100717 - SDS 28 line 129.
100718 - ..
100719 - I need to suggest to Hank that he try to contact Vernon
100720 - Walters about supporting the concept of a Leadership
100721 - Associate. First we would want him to coorborate our
100722 - understanding that he was asked to prepare notes following
100723 - meetings between President Reagan and others, where no notes
100724 - were taken during the meeting.
100725 -
100726 - Alternatively, would he permit his name being associated with
100727 - the need for a new class of leadership support in the age of
100728 - the Information Highway?
100729 -
100730 -
100731 -
100732 - Intel
100733 -
100734 - Bill said Intel is in the agenda. The material received and reviewed
100735 - at ref SDS 27 line 222 needs to be revised to show this. He indicated
100736 - there is a mixup in the documents between Bill and Sherrill.

SUBJECTS
Demonstrations

1104 -
110401 - Bill feels we covered too much territory; Hank seemed a little tired
110402 - at the end of the day. I was pushing too much at him in too short a
110403 - space, per Dave Buonchristiani's concern about Asilomar, ref SDS 14
110404 - line 106.
110405 -
110406 - I explained the tension between being brief to avoid overtaxing
110407 - someone's initial exposure to SDS, and conveying the impression that
110408 - it has a wide range of powerful tools that are different from anything
110409 - else, so the person will permit follow up to learn more. I mentioned
110410 - Sherrill McDonald's comment at Kaiser in 1994 on learning more about
110411 - SDS, ref SDS 2 line 95.
110412 -
110413 - But the challenge is getting the follow up presentations where those
110414 - who see the first presentation must try to explain to themselves and
110415 - to others what they saw, and cannot do this because there is no analog
110416 - for it anyone's experience. So they wind up being put off by claims
110417 - of technocrats, that other programs can do SDS stuff. If I were IBM or
110418 - Microsoft, the organizational credibility could help, but since Welch
110419 - does not yet have this credibility, we have to generate the will to
110420 - learn more, entirely from the presentation.
110421 - ..
110422 - My aim was to demonstrate the correlation with his perception of
110423 - the "military intelligence" role and the Vernon Walter's role of a
110424 - Communication Aid, or "Leadership Associate."
110425 -
110426 - We have a tricky assignment.
110427 -
110428 - We have to show people need the technology, i.e., they need the
110429 - tool to create the "intelligence" and get access to it; and they
110430 - also need a new person to use the tool who has the experience and
110431 - talent to create the "intelligence" with minimal input from the
110432 - leader or manager.
110433 -
110434 - Bill described this as "having the experience to recognize what to
110435 - link up." Secretaries and administrative assistants don't have
110436 - this experience. In some settings they can provide some SDS
110437 - support. But in the modern age of the Information Highway, an
110438 - executive like Hank Hatch, needs a "Vernon Walters" for his
110439 - "Leadership Associate" or "Communication Manager."
110440 -
110441 -
110442 - ..
110443 - Email Organization
110444 -
110445 - Bill noted that Hank's explanation of having more than 300 email on
110446 - his computer, as an example of Fluor's commitment to automated
110447 - solutions, might present a simple way for justifying a trial of SDS.
110448 - This large and growing body of information needs organization, i.e.,
110449 - needs to be converted into "knowledge." Actually, this may reflect
110450 - Hank's point in the quote he initially proposed to release for
110451 - Asilomar, about the need for the "organization" of knowledge, ref SDS
110452 - 23 line 107.
110453 -
110454 - Bill described the "folder" feature that most email systems use, but
110455 - which turn out to take a lot of time and then do not work very well
110456 - because it is difficult to remember what the folders mean, i.e., what
110457 - document was filed where, similar to a manual file system that
110458 - generally renders documents useless for daily management. This is the
110459 - precise problem described in the NWO paper that SDS solves using a
110460 - rich array of access routes, principally time and meaning, that
110461 - emulate the human mind, ref SDS 17 line 237.
110462 - ..
110463 - I showed Hank the SDS Doc Log, but did not show him his
110464 - particualr email messages that are entered, nor my responses.
110465 -
110466 - Bill observed that while SDS needs to contain all information flows,
110467 - starting with email permits the system to grow, because email in the
110468 - environment Hank described at Fluor, will touch all other activity.
110469 - So this presents an introduction path.
