0504 - Summary/Objective
0505 -
050501 - Follow up ref SDS 1 0000.
050502 -
050503 - Left message with Betsy for Mike to call about the budget for a course
050504 - on SDS at a High School, per ref SDS 1 line 485.
050505 -
050507 - ..
0506 -
0507 -
0508 - 1740 Mike called back
0509 -
050901 - I explained the ideas about doing a study of HS kids and the budget of
050902 - $100K per year for the school support, and an overall budget of $350K
050903 - per year, at ref SDS 1 line 529. Mike initially said $100K per year
050904 - is much more than would be needed for school to support the program.
050905 - He said they would not need computers because they have computers. I
050906 - did not mention that the computers would have to be configured
050907 - correctly, probably with os2, and so this means they would need
050908 - special training. Also the kids would get notebook computers to do
050909 - their work in class.
050911 - ..
050912 - We reviwed the idea from the meeting at USC on 951012 to develop an
050913 - experimental and alternative course to teach English. ref SDS 1 7477
050914 - Possibly it could called "Creative Thinking" or "Creative Writing"
050915 - that is an elective course like drama, and the curriculum would be to
050916 - teach SDS for thinking through writing, as explained in POIMS.
050917 - ref OF 1 3742
050919 - ..
050920 - Mike said the chances of getting this accepted would be slim and none,
050921 - because teachers and course planners feel they have figured out how to
050922 - teach English. There would be strong resistance. I noted that kids
050923 - would wind up doing a lot more reading and writing than they are doing
050924 - now under the present program. Mike felt strongly at least based on
050925 - his impression of my explanation today that it would be hard to create
050926 - a special substitute English course.
050928 - ..
050929 - His idea is that this effort would be supplemental. The difficulty
050930 - with that is that kids and teachers are going to have to work hard to
050931 - acquire this new capability. Asking them to do it on top of existing
050932 - curriculum seems to set the program up to fail. Could we pick kids
050933 - who are far enough along in English that a one year hiatus from
050934 - conventional course would not be significant.
050935 - ..
050936 - Comment
050937 -
050938 - Actually, as I think about this, it might be possible to develop
050939 - the course as simply an adjusted course curriculum. They would
050940 - still do the same reading and reporting.
050941 - ..
050942 - I posed the prospect of teaching the primary methodology in
050943 - summer school, then providing supplemental support during the school
050944 - year. Mike seemed to feel this might be more acceptable.
050946 - ..
050947 - Mike said they have a psychologist on staff at their school who would
050948 - be interested in this effort.
050949 -
050950 - [See use of psychologist in industry to treat "communication
050951 - problems" at ref SDS 3 line 114 and ref SDS 3 line 187, and
050952 - analysis at ref SDS 2 line 94.]
