- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 9 0000.
-
- The inadequacy of hand written notes was considered at the Cal Tech
- seminar on 921021. ref SDS 3 2830
-
- In thinking about the Asilomar conference that may relate to
- communications, the following group participation exercises could be
- used:
-
- 1. Hand out pads and pencils to half of attendees for the
- evening session. This would be accomplished by placing the
- writing materials at only half of the desks in advance of
- everyone sitting down.
-
- 2. Half the people will take notes for the evening session, the
- other half will not. Each note taker will put their name on
- the notepad.
-
- 3. The next day, the half that did not take notes, will explain
- what they recall from the prior evening's session.
-
- The group that took notes will disclose important points that
- were overlooked by the non-notetakers.
-
- 4. On the same day, the group that did not take notes will be
- given the notepads of those who took notes and will be asked
- to explain what they see is written down.
-
- The point is how readable (useable) is this form of investing
- intellectual capital?
-
- The notes will be collected at the end of the session, so
- they will be unavailable to the notetakers for a number of
- hours, emulating what happens in real life. When we need
- information it usually occurred sometime ago.
-
- 5. On the last day, the original note-takers will be given their
- notes back (using the names entered on the 1st day) and will
- be asked to explain what they see is written down.
-
- This will demonstrate how even the people who generate notes,
- they becoming harder to decipher with the passage of time,
- and so it is important to convert information into
- "knowledge" in order to give it lasting value.
-
-
- [Followed up at ref SDS 12 line 97, and ref SDS 13 line 106.]
-
- [Example are notes of Forum at ref SDS 14 line 202.]
-
-
- [See later example showing the value of writing as a business
- tool, ref SDS 15 line 158.]
-
-
- Easier, Faster Test of Human Memory
-
- Have everyone make a list of the 3 or 4 most powerful work practices
- or tools at their firm for making money.
-
- Sign the list.
-
- Hand the list to their neighbor.
-
- Ask various people to recite what they wrote.
-
- Do the same test an hour later.
-
- Many will not remember the 3 or 4 items because the ensuing
- presentation will have changed their perspective.
-
- Almost none will be able to recall the order in which they listed
- the tools.
-
- This test illustrates:
-
- Recall begins to fade immediately after a meeting.
-
- It fades faster when more information is being absorbed.
-
- We cannot remember order and priority very well.
-
-
- [I thought of this again at ref SDS 15 line 162.]
-
-
-
