0807 - ..
0808 - Summary/Objective
080901 - Follow up ref SDS 27 0000.
080903 - Ed will submit the report to KHLS today. I will send him some
080904 - language to consider in explaining the report.
080906 - ..
080907 - Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Ed, via fax, including this record.
080909 - ..
0812 - Discussion
081301 - Ed said that when he and Ann talked on 950516, ref SDS 25 R44G, she
081302 - said they wanted some sort of financial statement. I explained the
081303 - discussions Anne and I had last Friday on 950602. ref SDS 27 0001
081305 - ..
081306 - As a result Ed will submit the tax returns and a cover letter
081307 - indicating he has done our taxes since 1976, and feels the current
081308 - financial condition reflected by the returns are true and correct.
081309 - Our return was audited by the IRS in 1989 or 90, and the IRS found
081310 - them to be accurate.
081312 - ..
081313 - I would like Ed to consider including some language like the
081314 - following:
081316 - ..
081317 - Gallina Comment
081319 - The Welch Company is focused on developing and marketing a
081320 - software product called the "Schedule Diary System." It applies a
081321 - technology which evolved from Rod's experience as a contractor,
081322 - including the Welch v. State matter of interest to UPR. Rod calls
081323 - it a "Personal and Organizational Integrated Management System,"
081324 - or POIMS. The basic idea is to automate the practice of
081325 - management by integrating time, information, people and documents
081326 - into an "operating system" for people and organizations. Since
081327 - "managment" is complex, it necessarily took a long time to figure
081328 - out what to automate and to how to integreate the pieces so they
081329 - improve management productivity. Rod reports this step is
081330 - complete.
081332 - ..
081333 - The prospective market is very large for SDS as an "operating
081334 - system" for people and organizations, as seen from the success of
081335 - DOS, Windows and OS2 which are "operating systems" for computers.
081336 - If Rod is correct in his claim and can develop evidence to
081337 - substantiate that SDS lifts the capacity to think, remember and
081338 - communicate, then SDS could gain similar acceptance in the market
081339 - that operating systems for computers have enjoyed at Microsoft and
081340 - IBM. This seems to follow from the general awareness that the
081341 - foundation of Western civilization is the ability to invest
081342 - intellectual capital. We have not worked with SDS and so express
081343 - no opinion about its viability. The report from PG&E dated Dec
081344 - 30, 1994, seems to support the viability of the core concept SDS
081345 - applies of "converting information into knowledge," and that this
081346 - improves earnings substantially, ref DRP 2 line 21. Since most
081347 - firms want to improve earnings, SDS should nominally have wide
081348 - appeal.
081350 - ..
081351 - We have no experience with firms introducing new technologies,
081352 - like SDS, and so express no opinion on the prospects of near term
081353 - success in the market. Generally, however, the more fundamental
081354 - the advance, the more dramatic the benefits, the longer it can
081355 - take to become accepted in the market place because awareness and
081356 - credibility in something brand new must be created, ref SDS 23
081357 - line 126. We understand KHLS has investigated SDS and so may be
081358 - able to comment on this point from its experience, ref SDS 3 line
081359 - 53. The efforts Welch is making are shown in the reports
081360 - submitted with each tax report. They indicate continued but slow
081361 - progress due to his financial condition shown in the attached
081362 - reports.
081364 - ..
081365 - In sum, we believe the SDS product may be viable and that Welch
081366 - will continue to make progress in marketing SDS, as he has over
081367 - the past 10 years or so. An example are ongoing efforts to create
081368 - a new management science called "communication metrics" to help
081369 - executives grasp the role of SDS (see proposed curriculum for
081370 - Wharton School of Business, ref SDS 26 line 176). If he can
081371 - develop needed capital and/or alliances for marketing, then we
081372 - would expect this progress would be accelerated.
081375 - ..
0816 - 0907 called Anne
081701 - Left message of my discussion with Ed.
081703 - ..
0820 - 1253 called Ed
082101 - Talked to Courtney. She said Ed is at lunch, but our fax has been
082102 - received. She said it is 4 pages and it appears legible. I asked
082103 - her to have Ed call me.
082105 - ..
0824 - 1412 called Ed back
082501 - Left message asking if the material sent can be worked into his
082502 - report somehow.
082506 - ..
0828 - 1656 Ed called back
082901 - He is sending something out today in the mail.
082904 - ..
0832 - 1715 called Anne
083301 - Advised she should get the stuff from Ed in the next day or so.
083303 - I asked her about contacting UPR to see if they would wish to
083304 - investigate use Welch and SDS on some of their projects, per our
083305 - discussion at ref SDS 14 line 67.
083307 - ..
083308 - Anne said she submitted the report from PG&E. She will transmit the
083309 - report from Ed on our financial condition, and then in a few days she
083310 - will call UPR and discuss with them my idea of supporting UPR on its
083311 - problems projects.
Dilemma Writing Things Down Linking Things Up Improves Accuracy Redu
450401 - ..
450402 - Good Management Accuracy Takes Too Much Time
450403 - Meetings Waste Time Everyone Angry Remembering Differently
450404 - Alignment Takes Time, Causing Knowledge Management Dilemma
450406 - Discussed Anne's review of the NWO paper submitted last year with
450407 - letter, ref DIP 2 0000, on 940405. ref SDS 5 0001 Explained
450408 - disappointment about not hearing from Anne this past year.
450410 - ..
450411 - Anne said the NWO... paper coherently presents self-evident practices
450412 - of good management, and mentioned correlation with educational and
450413 - professional training. Anne further commented that NWO describes
450414 - interesting and important generic aspects of religion that guide daily
450415 - management, which are both overlooked in the literature, and which
450416 - people rarely use.
450418 - ..
450419 - An example, are citation methods used in the law and in religion which
450420 - can be applied to improve accuracy for daily work, as presented in the
450421 - NWO... paper. ref OF 3 0481 and ref OF 3 1443
450423 - ..
450424 - Anne said that analysis linked to original sources for accuracy,
450425 - explained in the NWO... paper, would obviously improve communications
450426 - for collaboration which are pillars of cooperation that leverage
450427 - individual efforts through teamwork. She noted that many people have
450428 - a good time suggesting lawyers are parasites who only increase costs
450429 - of doing business. This overlooks that the law enables certainty and
450430 - predictability for people to make reliable decisions about the future.
450431 - Civilization is the cost benefit study showing huge cost savings acrue
450432 - to everyone for objective accountability that binds everyone to the
450433 - search for accurate understanding of cause and effect, i.e., truth.
450435 - ..
450436 - Anne indicated, however, that executives and lawyers believe there is
450437 - not enough time to use legal citation methods for aligning daily work,
450438 - even though it is required in briefs to ensure accuracy in legal
450439 - proceedings. She said it takes a lot of time and hard work to find
450440 - information, identify sources, and construct citations that verify
450441 - accuracy of legal briefs. Accuracy is only practical because the
450442 - court requires citations. This legal requirement forces clients to
450443 - pay the cost of extra time to avoid mistakes. Anne noted that even
450444 - judges don't use citations outside the courtroom, because people
450445 - believe accuracy on daily work takes too much time. There is only
450446 - enough time for accuracy in court to fix mistakes.
450448 - ..
450449 - We considered using technology so it is faster and easier to find
450450 - sources and create citations, set out in POIMS. ref OF 1 6528 Anne
450451 - said this would make it more practical to use accurate information on
450452 - a regular basis that would reduce stress in the work place.
450454 - [On 991025 Peter Drucker proposed using technology for routinizing
450455 - difficult cognitive tasks. ref SDS 32 8925]
450457 - ..
450458 - Anne said that a lot of time is wasted in her daily work by high
450459 - priced people arguing about what was said and agreed upon at the last
450460 - meeting. She feels this is a big delimma, because nobody knows for
450461 - sure which takes longer....
450463 - 1. Ensuring accurate understanding by using the legal practice
450464 - of citing the record; or,
450466 - ..
450467 - 2. Fixing mistakes from inaccurate understanding.
450469 - ..
450470 - Since lawyers are not accountable for fixing mistakes, there is no
450471 - great rush to find out which costs more.
450473 - ..
450474 - Anne said people hate to review the record, especially lawyers,
450475 - because it seems to take too much time, especially if they find a
450476 - mistake and have to notify everybody. So, if it is not required to
450477 - create citations, people believe they save time by avoiding this step,
450478 - because it seems so fast and easy to use personal recall; but then
450479 - everybody recalls differently and this leads to frustrations and
450480 - endless arguments, where people get mad because they lose the time
450481 - they tried to save by skipping the effort to write things down and
450482 - organizing the record so information can be found when needed.
450484 - [On 950809 Anne reported law firm disbanded due to constant
450485 - disagreements in communication. ref SDS 29 4858
450487 - ..
450488 - [On 000106 knowledge management dilemma reivewed. ref SDS 33 5120]
450490 - ..
450491 - We reviewed experience at PG&E on 941211 showing a lot of time is lost
450492 - in stressful argument about understandings from prior communications
450493 - in meetings and phone calls. ref SDS 7 6488. Eric Jennett, a founder
450494 - of PMI, complained in an article reviewed on 940114 that despite
450495 - significant gains in technology and advances in management methods
450496 - developed by PMI and others, that the main management process of
450497 - communications in meetings has not improved. ref SDS 4 2290
450499 - ..
450500 - Another example is the Santa Clara County Jail project at ref SDS 1
450501 - 3890.
450503 - ..
450504 - On 950303 Morris explained a big problem that needs organizational
450505 - memory on a situation that occurred from a business trip to Paris.
450506 - ref SDS 9 3333
450508 - [On 960510 Morris cited same problem. ref SDS 30 2943]
450510 - [On 960721 Morris related same problem on Intel/Lockheed project.
450511 - ref SDS 31 0896]
450513 - ..
450514 - I explained the model of executives as "hunter/gatherers" who and show
450515 - up and "pull the trigger," then the entire organization spends days,
450516 - months, even years correcting the mistakes from ill founded decisions,
450517 - as presented in the SDS scenario, ref OF 2 line 766 developed at ref
450518 - SDS 22 line 56.
450520 - ..
450521 - Also discussed the idea of the Scribe, Communication Engineer/Manager
450522 - as necessary to introduce this new technology, developed at ref OF 2
450523 - line 798, because of the range of skills needed.
