0706 - ..
0707 - Summary/Objective
0708 -
070801 - Followed up work at ref SDS 8 line 46, and my letter ref DIP 2 line
070802 - 30. Crispin's letter says they cannot work on SDS. I developed some
070803 - ideas below for further consideration.
070804 -
070805 - Submitted ref DIT 1 line 30, including this record.
070806 -
070807 -

0710 -
0711 - Discussion Crispen Littlehales 503 482 9894
0712 -
071201 - Received ref DRT 1 line 18 responding to my letter ref DIP 2 line 30.
071202 - Crispen says they have too much work to take on the SDS project.
071203 -
071204 - She seems to continue to believe SDS is a worthwhile project, and
071205 - encourages me to contact Bill Gates, ref DRT 1 line 24. This seems
071206 - different from Alan Schein's position in which he reports in a letter
071207 - received today that he lacks the background and skills to contribute
071208 - to SDS, ref SDS 9 line 85.
071209 -
071210 - Crispin seems to have an internet address:
071211 -
071212 - scribe@rain.com
071213 -
071214 -
071215 - "Communications" & Welch
071216 - ------------------------
071217 - It may only be a coincidence but Crispin is now the 4th communication
071218 - professional in a few days to decline participation in POIMS,
071219 - Communication Metrics and SDS.
071220 -
071221 -
071222 - Experts Withdraw
071223 -
071224 - Alan Schein said in a letter today, he does not have the
071225 - background nor the skills to contribute, ref SDS 9 line 87. Marsha
071226 - Woodbury, referred by Crispin at ref SDS 4 line 312, has a Ph.D.
071227 - in Communications, and initially indicated strong interest, yet
071228 - withdrew today, ref SDS 10 line 68. Michele Zak at Stanford who
071229 - heads a "Communications" department, refused to even read the
071230 - POIMS material, because she felt the transmittal letter was
071231 - inadequately prepared, ref SDS 3 line 88, this despite the fact
071232 - that her assistant who read the material said it was precisely the
071233 - kind of thing that would interest Michele, ref SDS 1 line 54. Now
071234 - Crispin who had all sorts of good ideas, is unable to contribute.
071235 -
071236 - ..
071237 - Building Faith in a New World
071238 -
071239 - Why is a breakthrough in "communication" not a little more welcome
071240 - by people who make a living by communicating? Is there an error
071241 - in the way I am explaining it? That is why I am trying to obtain
071242 - help. One would expect that expert communicators are at home with
071243 - the idea that an extra effort is needed to explain fundamental
071244 - advance. If someone came to me with an offer to contribute on a
071245 - major advance to move the world ahead, it is difficult to see how
071246 - I could not find a way to join in. This seems like the response
071247 - of people who are discerning and forward thinking communication
071248 - experts. Lack of favorable response, therefore, leads to the
071249 - conclusion that my presentation is not winning any converts. How
071250 - can I win converts to create a cadre of disciples?
071251 -
071252 - The only exception is Jane Carpenter, Ph.D., Director of Corporate
071253 - Programs at Wharton, who said the material on POIMS was "beautifully
071254 - written and perfectly logical," ref SDS 6 line 57. What is the
071255 - difference between her expertise and background, and others who seem
071256 - less enamored with the material.
071257 -
071258 - [See follow up at ref SDS 12 line 64.]
071259 -
071260 - How do we find more Janes? We need a lot of people spreading the word
071261 - and the good news that there is a solution to the information gridlock
071262 - everyone faces everyday. This is Crispin's idea of building awareness
071263 - and credibility. She recommends contacting Bill Gates, ref DRT 1 line
071264 - 25, because that would provide instant faith by the market. But Bill
071265 - is busy with Windows 95 and with trying to build an organization that
071266 - can survive the tools it has created.
071267 -
071268 -
071269 -
071270 - Scope of Contribution
071271 -
071272 - I still don't understand what Crispin in "passing" up. So far we have
071273 - not defined a body of work. The purpose of meeting was to talk about
071274 - what might be done, what needs to be done, per our discussion at ref
071275 - SDS 8 line 127.
071276 -
071277 - One area seems to be to assist in getting articles published on our
071278 - technology. This is critical to introducing a new management science
071279 - (Communication Metrics) and technology to support it (POIMS). I am not
071280 - sure about what they actually do.
071281 -
071282 - • Do they write articles, or
071283 -
071284 - • Put us in contact with publishers who deal with us directly
071285 -
071286 - I certainly need to get material published and debated on my work.
071287 - What does LC do? This is developed in LC's brochure Crispin submitted
071288 - with her letter:
071289 -
071290 -
071291 - Marketing & Communications
071292 -
071293 - LC articulated the vision for HP's Analytical Products Group by
071294 - interviewing HP executives, sales reps and customers. This
071295 - entailed shaping and refining the Group's positioning.
071296 -
071297 - LC worked with Information Data Group to invent a new image,
071298 - positioning strategy and sales story for the publication "Advanced
071299 - Systems," renamed from SunWorld. This helped the magazine recover
071300 - from a downsizing market by recording with a year an increase of
071301 - sales revenue of $1m.
071302 -
071303 - LC developed a brochure to enhance HP's reputation for responsi-
071304 - ble environmental policy in reducing waste, providing safe work
071305 - conditions, and monitoring capabilities. The brochure got positive
071306 - feedback.
071307 -
071308 - Comment
071309 -
071310 - LC's experience with HP and other executives, should support
071311 - designing a brochure that helps executives see the benefits of
071312 - using SDS for Communication Metrics.
071313 -
071314 -
071315 -
071316 - Copywriting
071317 -
071318 - This service seems to be writing "success stories and articles" to
071319 - promote innovative uses of technology by various firms.
071320 -
071321 - They develop presentation scripts and video scripts.
071322 -
071323 - Comment
071324 -
071325 - I don't understand why this is "copywriting."
071326 -
071327 - Maybe they could do a story on use of SDS at PG&E to promote the
071328 - idea of the need for a communications engineer to perform
071329 - communication metrics.
071330 -
071331 - Radio Presentation Script
071332 -
071333 - I have long believed that the best way to market SDS is to do
071334 - skits on the radio in the morning commute when people are
071335 - contemplating the problems they are going to encounter, and then
071336 - the afternoon commute when people are reviewing the disasters
071337 - they did encounter.
071338 -
071339 - POIMS and Communication Metrics provide significant literary
071340 - potential. A radio dialog would set up a typical communication
071341 - problem and then show how it was readily solved by SDS. Problems
071342 - can range from fixing a computer, obtaining a key document, to
071343 - solving a contract dispute, misunderstanding between boss and
071344 - staff (like the UPS commercial on TV a few months ago), progress
071345 - meetings, TQM meetings, sales meetings, downsizing meetings,
071346 - etc. The range is endless. Selling SDS requires identifying
071347 - problems people encounter everyday and showing SDS is the
071348 - solution, and in fact is the only solution to problems feel are
071349 - insoluble.
071350 -
071351 -
071352 - Public Relations
071353 -
071354 - This is making people, places and products famous, e.g., they
071355 - promoted the Cabbage Patch Kids.
071356 -
071357 - Comment
071358 -
071359 - POIMS, Communication Metrics, SDS -- need promoting.
071360 -
071361 - People recognize the value of knowledge and ideas from famous
071362 - people, and so often own and use an encyclopedia. They do not
071363 - yet know about the far greater value of their own knowledge
071364 - ideas arrayed in a readily accessible electronic encyclopedia.
071365 -
071366 - People know communications are a business weakness, but they also
071367 - know they cannot afford to hire Crispin or Alan to handle every
071368 - phone call and meeting. What they do not know is the power of
071369 - their own skill and experience when leveraged by the automated
071370 - integration of key management practices using SDS to perform
071371 - communication metrics.
071372 -
071373 -
071374 - Grasping Technology
071375 -
071376 - I mentioned the importance of grasping POIMS and Communication
071377 - Metrics at ref SDS 8 line 143. LC's brochure shows they recognize
071378 - the importance of this step.
071379 -
071380 -
071381 -
071382 - Ideas for Business Relationship
071383 -
071384 - Crispin's investment so far in Welch shows a strong interest in
071385 - pursuing the SDS project, POIMS and Communication Metrics, ref SDS 8
071386 - line 78. She said in our second discussion that SDS would be helpful
071387 - at LC, ref SDS 8 line 86.
071388 -
071389 - Possibly we can develop a relationship that resolves their problem of
071390 - having too much business, and thereby free up time for LC to support
071391 - the SDS project. Here are two ideas:
071392 -
071393 - • Welch would provide communication metrics support for LC to
071394 - enable Crispin to obtain the benefits she anticipates.
071395 -
071396 - • LC would then have more time to contribute to the SDS project.
071397 -
071398 - This accomplishes useful work for LC which relieves their backlog, and
071399 - provides a base of understanding for them to support SDS.
071400 -
071401 - Toward this end, I am willing to attend a few meetings and do some
071402 - work on behalf of LC at no charge in order for them to evaluate the
071403 - viability of applying communication metrics using Welch's expertise
071404 - with SDS. This applies the virtual corporation model that is coming
071405 - into vogue. If this turns out to be as helpful as Crispin expects,
071406 - then we can work out some sensible arrangements on payment and
071407 - services.
071408 -
071409 - [Followed up at ref SDS 11 line 65.]
