- It is another source for the idea of manager as "artist",
- ref OF 14 line 183. Management is an "art" for the content of the
- work, rather than self-image or personal ambitions of the manager,

- The need to balance or harmonize elements as an "art" is cited

- Self-actualization Cannot be Achieved Equally
-
- The author challenges the efficacy of New Age Businses, unfortunately,
- from my perspective, noting the obvious that since everyone cannot
- experience the same degree of "freedom" in the author's view, as the
- boss or owner, then striving to achieve "self-actualization" through
- work, is misguided. There are fients toward the women's and minority
- agendas that they are left out. There is a "limited resources" men-
- tality, that seems to indicate that everyone cannot aim for the same
- general goal. This seems to lead to the idea that men must manage
- from a women's "community" perspective, rather from a competitive
- perspective.

- Lean Enterprise Reengineering Different from Virtual Corporation
-
- Article presents ideas developed applying TQM principals to achieve
- "lean production," by extending to achieve a "lean enterprise."
- ref OF 23 LY4M They distinguish this from the concept of a "virtual
- corporation," on the grounds that the latter implies personnel who
- come and go in the production process, ref OF 23 L138

- [On 940510 virtual corporation model remains difficult to
- implement reported in HBR article. ref SDS 11 HU97
- ..
- They say no company has achieved their vision, because it requires
- different personnel policies. In construction, their idea seems to
- relate to idea of "Partnering," in talking about sharing "pains" and
- "gains," ref OF 23 LPUS

- Communication Engineer, Knowledge Worker, Continual Learning
-
- There is helpful perspective in this article for a theory of a new
- "knowledge worker" developed on 931008, ref SDS 4 3083, and from
- Drucker's work reviewed on 931130. ref SDS 5 7720 The authors view
- "knowledge workers" through the old paradigm of acquiring "knowledge"
- in school, that is then applied in groups called "functions" and is
- portable, see ref OF 23 line 105.
-
- This section applies the idea of "learning organizations" where
- learning is collected, systematized, and deployed. It does not
- talk about converting information into knowledge, however, which
- is the ingredient SDS brings, per ref OF 2 line 41.
-
- [This concept was applied a year later in the ISO 10006
- management criteria for projects, ref SDS 14 line 496 and
- defining Communication Metrics at ref SDS 12 line 204.
- ..
- The authors advance the idea that all functional work is done at the
- team level. Functional departments are essentially training entities.
- ref OF 23 line 418, that define rules for managing cross-functional
- teams, sets practices of quality assurance, and searches for better
- practices, new ideas for each particular function.
-
- One weakness I see is loss of identity of the function, pride of
- workmanship; another disadvantage might be lack of cross-fertili-
- zation and support from colleagues. Within a team, some functions
- will be held in greater esteem than others. In a functional
- group, social stigma does not arise predicated on the functional
- title or work being performed.
- ..
- It is not clear that a functional training organization can provide
- the training needed. Most training requires live situations to
- illustrate and reinforce ideas, i.e. OJT and learn by doing. If
- Functional departments are not doing anything but training, the amount
- and value of useful training, may actually decline.
-
- ..
- The jist of the article toward greater cooperation, ref OF 23 line
- 575, leaves open the question of where the line of cooperation ends
- and collusion begins with respect to avoiding essential competition to
- weed out poor performance and foster energy and vitality of new ideas.
