-
- Briefly reviewed evolution of ideas that led to SDS and to POIMS

-
- Then showed how the same material can be accessed more quickly by
- using SDS linked records to draw on prior related events.
-
-
-
- Steve asked how SDS improves productivity?
-
- He feels SDS product literature and the demonstration do not
- establish this central objective.
-
-
- ..
- SDS Expedites Reading and Writing
-
- SDS improves traditional alphabet technology using quill, pen,
- pencil and paper, wordprocessing and email, in the same way
- that writing improves speech as a medium to think, remember and
- communicate, explained on 900430. ref SDS 1 6835 We could
- probably build a hospital or a factory without plans and specs,
- contracts and correspondence, Writing however means far fewer
- people and hours of work are required to listen, remember and
- cross-check understandings. Thus, use of alphabet technology
- is the foundation of civiliation, and so improvement of that
- underlying engine must improve productivity and earnings in
- like manner.
-
- [On 981108 alphabet was an explosive technology that
- changed civilization. ref SDS 13 5628
-
- [On
-
- ref SDS 13 5810 and ref SDS 13 7426
-
- Manual organization and handling of writing was adequate when
- "work" was mainly manual labor and there was relatively little
- "management" information to track. Today, however, creation and
- handling information is a much larger share of total labor
- hours, because a lot of manual labor has been automated.
- Traditional literacy and procedures for organizing documents,
- commonly called "information technology and information
- management, is too complex to maintain alignment between
- communication and the work. make mistakes and miss
- opportunities because the flow of information cannot be
- assimilated effectively. ref OF 4 8844
-
- [On 950204 SDS firepower improves writing. ref SDS 12 4995
-
- [On 981108 transition to literacy was long and painful.
- ref SDS 13 5810 and ref SDS 13 7426
-
- SDS solves this problem, improving management productivity, per
- POIMS. ref OF 4 6528
-
-
- ..
- Com Manager Engineering Aides Facilitators Admin Support
- Caltrans Example Automation Can Reduce Productivity
- Automate or Hire More People to Improve Productivity
-
- An old hand at Caltrans who worked on the Bay Bridge, once told
- me that because wages were so low during the depression, they
- could afford to have many more engineers than today's wages
- permit, from the record of the Cal Tech seminar on 921020.
- ref SDS 2 4365. These "extra" engineers were inspectors and
- facilitators to handle information. The Caltrans rep recalled
- there were far fewer snafus than occur today. SDS increases the
- ability of individuals and organizations to capture, organize,
- retrieve and communicate knowledge and ideas quickly, so fewer
- people can do more work for higher wages without making so many
- mistakes.
-
-
- SDS Improves Speaking to Facilitate Meetings
-
- Communication through dialog is improved by SDS because it
- empowers people to obtain comprehensive lists of issues that
- require attention and it provides background and history to
- guide dialog so it is productive by showing alignment with
- prior commitments, objectives, requirements and constraints
- in contracts, specifications, regulations and so on.
-
-
- Reports
-
- Steve asked if SDS can assemble information by "subject" arising
- at disparate times from memos, discussions, analyses, letters and
- phone calls, throughout the project chronology? Steve said one of
- his projects fills several filing cabinets and is only 40% com-
- plete.
-
- I ran a "subject" report showing how SDS assembles a 30 page
- report from records covering a 3 year period, in less than
- 20 seconds. It would take days or weeks to do this by
- existing methods.
-
- SDS assembles reports by:
-
- 1. Subjects
- 2. Cost Accounts
- 3. CPM schedule activity/WBS level
- 4. An organization (company, agency, etc.)
- 5. An individual within an organization
- 6. A particular document
- 7. A particular file (e.g. spreadsheet)
- 8. Employee
-
- SDS reports are always in perfect chronological order.
-
-
- Steve asked how SDS manages a plan review covering several hundred
- items?
-
- Use cross referencing
-
- Each item is entered in the Subject Index under "Plan
- Reviews", which can be segmented by number, date, entity,
- person, etc (e.g. "#03", 930723, Bechtal, Tom).
-
- Additionally, each item would be cross referenced to the
- appropriate plan sheet and detail. A third cross reference
- would be to spec section, so status can be reported in
- logical summaries (e.g. Mechanical, HVAC, Controls, etc.).
-
- SDS allows making these assignments in seconds, and since it
- replicates control assignments for follow up tasks, subject
- identification only needs to be done once. Thereafter each
- time more work is done on a particular item, it is already
- identified to the system.
-
-
- The demonstration today showed concepts and overall features. Fol-
- low up demonstrations can focus on solving problems for particular
- projects and managers.
-
-
-
- Ken said after the meeting that an SMP principal is interested in
- automated management support. We may do a separate demo for him.
-
-
- Received SDS survey response from Luminita. Should try to follow up
- on some of her responses.
