070907 - Improving the Biggest Factor in Management
070908 -
070909 - Began remarks by referring to Mike's son, Paul, as a good tennis
070910 - player because he has power and control, to illustrate the need for
070911 - managers to balance and integrate the authority of management to
070912 - exercise of power, with a system of controls, as explained in the
070913 - POIMS paper as "command and control of the record. ref OF 3 1113
070915 - ..
070916 - Reviewed role of management to set objectives, plan and follow up, and
070917 - this is largely a daily process of constant communication in meetings,
070918 - calls and documents. Most managers do get the benefit of attending an
070919 - MBA program, but rather acquire managerial experience from being
070920 - promoted based on execellence in technical skills, often in
070921 - engineering, accounting and marketing.

070924 - Defined concept of an "intelligence" role in management. ref OF 3 0582

070937 - ..
070938 - Explained advantage of tools and processes that capture daily
070939 - management experience in stories of chronologies that show cause and
070940 - effect, as the foundation of human intelligence, from review of Jeremy
070941 - Campbell's book, "The Improbable Machine" on 900303. ref SDS 1 3016

0711 - Discussion
0712 -
071201 - Mike asked if POIMS contemplates people changing the way they do
071202 - business?
071203 -
071204 - I explained that organic environments are in constant flux.
071205 - Business is an organic system, and so is changing every day in
071206 - ways large and small. Ten years ago, no one had heard of the PC,
071207 - people thought of "windows" as something to wash on Saturdays.
071209 - ..
071210 - Fifty years ago, nobody had heard of the CIA, nor CPM, today,
071211 - James Bond is an accepted icon of the need for dedicated
071212 - "intelligence" resources in government, and every major contract
071213 - in construction, ship building and aerospace requires CPM
071214 - planning.
071216 - ..
071217 - An evolving world is a faster world. So, yes business managers
071218 - must evolve to keep up. The world is not going to slow down,
071219 - because managers don't feel like using computers. The key is to
071220 - apply computers to generate knowledge and ideas, rather simply
071221 - piling up more information.
071222 -
071224 - ..
071225 - Mike asked how information differs from knowledge, and how can
071226 - computers help?
071227 -
071228 - I explained "knowledge" is a higher, more useful, form of
071229 - information, in the same way that the alphabet is an applied to
071230 - create words and sentences that comprise information. The human
071231 - mind uses intelligence to connect up information over time to
071232 - understand cause and effect. I call these understandings of cause
071233 - and effect "knowledge." So, knowledge is the accumulation of
071234 - information overtime that yields consistent results of cause and
071235 - effect.
071237 - ..
071238 - Computers applied the wrong way, to simply generate mountains of
071239 - information, reduce understanding when the mind is unable to
071240 - create the connections of cause and effect that produce useful
071241 - knowledge. Computers, however, can be used to actually help the
071242 - mind create connections and retrieve them when needed. This is
071243 - the next big advance in technology that will be coming along in
071244 - the next decade.
071245 -
071247 - ..
071248 - He asked how many people use computers?
071249 -
071250 - Today, maybe 10%, maybe 20% at most. But in 10 years that
071251 - figure will jump to 80% or so, because it is the only chance
071252 - business people have of leveraging human intelligence, as
071253 - explained in POIMS
071254 -
071256 - ..
071257 - He asked how many people enjoy using computers?
071258 -
071259 - Most people don't enjoy using computers because they seem
071260 - mysterious and they do not help them think, remember and
071261 - communicate, which is the bulk of daily life.
