271504 -
271505 - Today, planning trial hike to above Nevada Falls. This will test
271506 - conditioning and physical ability to hike Half Dome scheduled on
271507 - 160914.
271509 - ..
271510 - Took initial medications, reported in case study on 140101 0600.
271511 - ref SDS 44 ER8F
271513 - ..
271514 - Feet seem okay this morning, despite rising dehydration from taking
271515 - Pantooprazole 40 mg twice per day, increasing from previously taking
271516 - Omeprazole 20 mg every other day. So decided not to bandage sore on
271517 - big toe left foot, and also bandage toe next to little toe on left
271518 - foot.
271520 - ..
271521 - Wearing new Brooks Ghost shoes that have a wide 5E size, which
271522 - prevents blisters on toes. At the house wore white socks, and took
271523 - standard wool socks for hike. Did not wear compression shorts in
271524 - order to optimize comfort for the 3 - 4 hour drive.
271526 - ..
271527 - Initially bought 1 pair Brooks Ghost shoes on 160709 1612. ref SDS 79
271528 - GS8M Later, on 160730, bought 2 more pair of Brooks Ghost shoes.
271529 - ref SDS 83 WQ8N
271530 -
271531 - [On 160916 1318 bought 4 more pair Books Ghost shoes size
271532 - 10 wide 2E, from Fleet Feet, to make total of 7 pair for
271533 - rotating 1 pair each day of week. ref SDS 87 T09G
271535 - ..
271536 - Took Glucosamine Chondroitin for both knees, per protocol, and took
271537 - Naproxen to minimize inflammation/pain. Will arrive at Yosemite in 4
271538 - hours, about time Naproxen effect begins to peak. For the major hike
271539 - to Half Dome will take about time begin hike, because it will take
271540 - about 12 hours.

271542 -
271543 -
271545 - ..
2716 -
2717 -
2718 - 0305
2719 -
271901 - Departed house in Concord.
271902 -
271903 - Stopped for gas at ARCO on CLayton Road.
271905 - ..
271906 - Post expense ledger...
271909 -
271911 - ..
271912 - Took Marsh Creek Road in Clayton, as previously, reported on 130917
271913 - 0830. ref SDS 30 6A6F
271915 - ..
271916 - There seemed to be an error. Once on Marsh Creek Road it was dark, so
271917 - could not see the street well. Google search for directions provided
271918 - voice guidance.
271920 - ..
271921 - This seemed to miss a turn or something, because wound up on a very,
271922 - very narrow road, essentially a single lane with no markings, plus
271923 - significant winding compounded going up and down hills. Could drive
271924 - only 20 mph most of the way due of lack of visibility and
271925 - maneuverability that reduced time to adjust to zero (0). This lasted
271926 - for 15 or more miles, and would have presented significant safety
271927 - problems later in the day with traffice coming the other way. Since
271928 - it was 0300 in the morning, luckily there was no opposing traffic.
271929 - Seemed like the route was way off. Never had opportunity to take
271930 - Vasco Road.
271932 - ..
271933 - None-the-less, Google directions eventually wound up on 580 East,
271934 - however, at a point West of Vasco Road, since driving East to the
271935 - destination encountered Vasco.
271937 - ..
271938 - Missed directions extended the trip at least 20 minutes, because did
271939 - not reach 580 until 0400.
271941 - ..
271942 - Noteworthy - traffic going West on 580 at 0400, was slowed to a stop,
271943 - i.e., bumper to bumper - just a slow moving parking lot. This is a
271944 - major indicator that the economy is bursting. Full employment has
271945 - more than been reached, with a large part of the population getting up
271946 - at 0300 in the morning and driving work at 0400 in an attempt to avoid
271947 - delays of heavy traffic. Nobody wants to do this, but a great many
271948 - people are.
271950 - ..
271951 - Fortunately, East bound traffic was light, and so could make good
271952 - time.
271953 -
271955 - ..
2720 -
2721 -
2722 - 0535
2723 -
272301 - There were 2 traffic delays high in the mountains.
272302 -
272303 - Work is underway on the bridge that crosses a section Lake Don Pedro.
272304 - Evidently Caltrans is adding another set of lanes on the existing
272305 - support structure. There was a stop light set to red on reaching this
272306 - location. Signs said to wait. In the dark, was not sure this did not
272307 - mean to simply stop and then procede with caution. There was no
272308 - flagman present at this hour. After waiting for 10 minutes considered
272309 - proceding and hoping there would be room for vechicls to pass. Turned
272310 - out this was incorrect. Headlights finally showed up in the distance.
272311 - On reaching the end of the bridge single lane, where the stop light
272312 - was red, these headlights were for a very big transport truck. A few
272313 - minutes later another vehicle came through, then a few more.
272314 - Finally, the light turned green. By this time, a few cars had formed
272315 - up, and everyone went through this location in single file to beyond
272316 - the other control light, and then could return to normal speed.
272318 - ..
272319 - Not sure where, but eventually went through 4 tunnels on 120, with
272320 - the last just before turning onto highway 40, where it joins with 120
272321 - into the park.
272322 -
272323 -
272325 - ..
2724 -
2725 -
2726 - 0614
2727 -
272701 - The 2nd construction delay occurred further up in the mountains.
272702 -
272703 - By this time construction crew was on site. Flagmen stopped traffic.
272704 - A truck led vehicle traffic through the construction zone, and then
272705 - led opposing traffic the other way.
272707 - ..
272708 - Later, going through the park ranger station to enter Yosemite area,
272709 - there was a sign to go through without paying a fee.
272710 -
272711 -
272713 - ..
2728 -
2729 -
2730 - 0647
2731 -
273101 - Arrived Yosemite. Drove to Curry Village, now called Half Dome
273102 - Village. Had to use the restroom, so this took 15 minutes. The first
273103 - restroom was locked, so this presented a problem. Asked someone
273104 - walking by for directions for restrooms. Had to walk up the road a
273105 - short distance, and the around behind the main Curry Village offices.
273107 - ..
273108 - Walked back to the car. Could not change into compression shorts in
273109 - the drivers seat. Nobody was up yet, just undressed and put on the
273110 - compression shorts needed to make the hike. Also switched white
273111 - cotton socks to wool socks.
273113 - ..
273114 - Then drove up the road, and parked in the last lot for Curry Village
273115 - on the right. This is where Kathy and I parked 2 years ago on March
273116 - for hike to the Wood Bridge, reported on 150303 1003. ref SDS 64 EI69
273118 - ..
273119 - Asked someone in the parking lot about needing a permit to park. He
273120 - said no permit is required to park in this lot, and that today,
273121 - Yosemite has waived all parking fees and the entry fee into the park,
273122 - because of a 100 year celebration. This may explain why there was no
273123 - fee to enter today, per above. ref SDS 0 YM6G
273125 - ..
273126 - Temperature seemed okay, so did not wear a coat which was used to
273127 - carry a bottle of water on Half Dome hike last year on 130918 0620,
273128 - ref SDS 31 LV9F
273130 - ..
273131 - Today decided to take the backpack purchased for the hike on 140403
273132 - 1254. ref SDS 47 T63G Packed a single, but bigger bottle of water, 20
273133 - oz instead of 16 oz last year, and as planned in post review of hike
273134 - last year on 130918 0620. ref SDS 31 BJ5K
273136 - ..
273137 - Also taking...

273141 - 2. Ensure to drink at trailhead before starting hike.

273158 - ..
273159 - The water alone seemed to weigh 20 pounds. The whole thing seemed
273160 - like 50 pounds, but probably only weighed 15 pounds.
273162 - ..
273163 - **** [...below on 160825 0143 left knee with severe degenerative

273511 - 10 minutes more than last year, reported on 150916 0535. ref SDS 68

273906 - After crossing the bridge, the South side trail changes markedly for
273907 - the remaining .7 miles up to Vernal Falls. A hundred yards or so past
273908 - the bridge the trail divides at "Register Rock P." The Mist trail hugs
273909 - the vertical cliff of the Merced river gourge. A sign identifies the
273910 - trailhead for the flatter and longer John Muir Trail also to Vernal
273911 - Falls.
273913 - ..
273914 - Took the shorter Mist trail to Vernal Falls.
273916 - ..
273917 - Most of this trail is very steep. Solid granite rock steps are formed
273918 - from large, irregular stones. These variable rock "steps" are from 6"
273919 - to over 24" in height. Some steps are simply rounded smooth boulders.
273920 - Many are jagged in irregular shape. At several places the path
273921 - narrows to less than 3'. Where the grade is particularly steep, this
273922 - is more like climbing a ladder. The rocks are angled back intended to
273923 - faciliate balance so people descending do not pitch forward. This
273924 - presents only an edge for a stepping surface climbing up the trail.
273926 - ..
273927 - The route takes strength and endurance to climb, along with deciding
273928 - the best place to step. Since there are only limited railings, hiking
273929 - up the trail requires pushing off with one foot and lifting body
273930 - weight with the other. The body has to lean forward in order to avoid
273931 - falling backward. This requires significant neurological (mental)
273932 - processing, because each step is different. Constant decisions arise
273933 - on positioning one foot for balance, and sufficient push with the
273934 - other foot for momentun to carry the body forward. With only limited
273935 - railings there are only 2 choices for using hands to aid the ascent.
273936 - About 50% of the way it is possible to use the right side of the cliff
273937 - and in some cases large boulders to provide balance assurance. About
273938 - 30% of the route the steps are steep enough to simply lean forward and
273939 - reach out to the steps above for balance. The remaining 20% present
273940 - varying challenges for people with balance deficits or concerns.
273942 - ..
273943 - Theoretically, balance problems in this case were resolved when
273944 - Bethany cured BPPV, during the meeting at VAMCSF on 160707 0900.
273945 - ref SDS 78 6E7J Five (5) days later on 160712, reported there had
273946 - been no dizziness and balance problems, since Bethany's efforts.
273947 - 160712 0426, ref SDS 80 QY5F This was confirmed 2 days later in a
273948 - meeting with Neurology on 160715 1630. ref SDS 81 S19F After another
273949 - 2 weeks, there still had been no further balance problems, reported in
273950 - a letter to Stanford Neuroscience on 160730 0926. ref SDS 82 DX64 In
273951 - fact, since 160707, there has been no evidence dizziness nor balance
273952 - problems.
273954 - ..
273955 - About halfway up, a metal railing reduces danger of bumping the
273956 - verticle cliff on the right side and falling off the cliff into the
273957 - gourge on the left. Another metal railing is in place for about the
273958 - last 200 feet to the top. The railing enables using the left hand for
273959 - pulling up to climb these 2 sections.
273961 - ..
273962 - Mental balance challenges explained above, ref SDS 0 WR58, compounded
273963 - from experience falling, as occurred last year on 150916 0535.
273964 - ref SDS 68 O87H The prior fall raises doubts, and so instills
273965 - caution. Watching other, young hikers nimbly step up the Vernal Falls
273966 - trail, seemed incongruous with excessive caution today. Reminded of a
273967 - quote attributed to Jack Nicholas, saying something like...
273968 -
273969 - Question: Jack, when you were young, you never missed 2' putts.
273971 - ..
273972 - Jack's response: That was before I missed one. I was fearless
273973 - then. Now I know missing is possible, so...
273975 - ..
273976 - Thus, despite the record showing resolution of balance and dizziness
273977 - problems, anxiety remained performing a process that significantly
273978 - taxes balance, per above, ref SDS 0 WR58, and presents severe danger
273979 - in the event of losing balance, as a result of having missed not once
273980 - last year on 150916 0535, ref SDS 68 O87H, but again this year on
273981 - 160501, shown in case study on 140101 0600. ref SDS 44 O85F
273983 - ..
273984 - That is why the hike today was important. It is one thing to have
273985 - medical clearance, and quite another to risk repeating a process that
273986 - resulted in falling, and landing in the hospital for several days,
273987 - with 4 months recovery from injury. Looking at each step of the trail
273988 - today, there was definite concern about falling, i.e., the brain was
273989 - more vividly aware of consequences from a single misstep. Somehow,
273990 - advanced up the trail with caution and trepidation, actually fear.
273991 - Must have looked a bit foolish to other hikers, by leaning forward and
273992 - reaching out to steps above for balance assurance. This was further
273993 - manifest by stopping to rest 5 or so times, making sure fatigue would
273994 - not cause falling.
273996 - ..
273997 - Actually, even after BPPV was evaluated on 160523 0830, ref SDS 76
273998 - I769, falls were diagnosed as fatigue related during meeting with
273999 - Doctor Yoo in Neurology on 160603 1430. ref SDS 77 2Y53

274432 - splits. John Muir Trail veering to the right is flatter and longer
274433 - about 1.6 miles. The steeper trail is only 1.3 miles. Last year took
274434 - the steep trail, reported on 150916 0535. ref SDS 68 6Q63
274436 - ..
274437 - Decided to take shorter, steeper trail to Nevada Falls in order to
274438 - test ability to do the hike along the same route where the fall
274439 - occurred last year. ref SDS 68 O87H
274441 - ..
274442 - The hike 2 years ago, took the longer and flatter John Muir trail,
274443 - because poor conditioning caused by metatarsalgia feet injuries the
274444 - prior 2 months, reported on 140917 0540. ref SDS 61 6Q63
274446 - ..
274447 - This year have not been able to train as much, so conditioning is not
274448 - great, but the need to repeat circumstances that caused falling during
274449 - the hike last year required taking the steeper trail today. This
274450 - tested ability to hike a location where trail has mostly irregular
274451 - steps, and so previously was problematic, shown in the picture hiking
274452 - this section - see next section.
274454 - ..
274455 - Despite falling last year, the steeper Mist trail to Nevada Falls has

275614 - path has been formed by hikers on the edge of the main trail because
275615 - firmer soil makes walking easier. This conserves energy. You have to
275616 - step over a few logs along the way that traverse the path and not the
275617 - main trail. These logs are mostly less than 2' in diameter, so this
