- Received ref DRT 1 0001 dated 070215 from Uncle Jim responding to
- notice of mother passing on 070205, ref DIP 5 0001, and which was
- submitted to Rita for Uncle Jim and Aunt Barbara on 070207.

- TG6H Another letter, ref DIP 7 0001, was submitted with a copy to

- Uncle Jim says in his letter on 070215...
-
- 1. I'm sorry not to have responded to your telephone message
- concerning your mother passing sooner, however we more or less
- waited for a follow on as to any services, etc, even though our
- age and frailties prevent attending.
- ..
- 2. We are both most sorry to know that your mother has left us and
- in fact were unaware she was in a failing health condition. We
- have kept in touch with her by an occassional telephone visit.
- The last we talked she seemed to be doing okay. We enjoyed
- those calls, keeping in touch with her and knowing that life
- was treating her pretty well in spite of the old demon of the
- elderly --- years --- always years creeping along each day.
- ..
- Mother's health began to fail about 5 years ago with advancing
- emphasema, and then constant pain from osteoperosus. She was not a
- complainer, and bore her problems with courage and determination not
- to burden others, as Uncle Jim relates today.
- ..
- One year Millie and I were visiting mother and Bob in Nipomo. Mother
- commented on fond memories of Uncle Jim and Aunt Barbara. I called
- Uncle Jim and Aunt Barbara from Mother and Bob's home, so that mother
- could talk to Aunt Barbara and renew their long friendship.

- [...mention this in a letter to Uncle Jim. ref SDS 0 4W5V
- ..
- Uncle Jim's letter continues...
-
- 3. You children will miss your mother. My father used to tell his
- boys, "Now, when your old dad is gon, you take care of your
- mother, she is the best friend you will ever have." I don't
- actually subscribe to that Rod, but I will say, having lived
- almost half my lifetime past my mother's passing, that rarely
- is there an event of concern to me that my conscience does not
- flash a thought of my mother. You mother will be always
- subconsciously still on your life.
- ..
- The letter to Reverend Boyd on 070214 relates that mother was not
- "mom" to us, owing to various circumstances (related in part through
- remembrances on 070205, ref SDS 38 JY4G), yet remains a force in our
- lives, ref SDS 41 3N4P, as Uncle Jim relates. Us kids were lucky to
- have Lillian come into dad's life, and she has been a great "mom" for
- all these years.
- ..
- Lucille Johnston, Diane's mother, became a sort of surrogate mother, a
- listening post, especially after 1977, and until her passing reported
- on 930825. ref SDS 2 0001 Lucille loved and admired Millie, as well.
- She bequeathed her wedding rings to Millie, showing great and lasting
- affection, also reported on 930825. ref SDS 2 PQWQ We could talk
- about my work, ideas, politics, religion, legal reasoning, management
- practice, anything. Lucille never said was I wrong. When she said
- "That's very interesting, Rod," and changed the subject, I knew a
- particular thought needed more work.
- ..
- I was fortunate to have 3 mothers, each who contributed something
- special and important to my life.
-
- [...mention this in a letter to Uncle Jim. ref SDS 0 989W
- ..
- Uncle Jim's letter continues...
-
- 4. She and your father were very good to your Aunt Barbara in my
- absence when she was alone during the war. Your mother would
- pick her up most weekends and they would go to dinner, and then
- go dancing or see a movie. My bride of five months was very
- appreciative of that; it made her life less lonely and at the
- same time a real friendship in a new family. That your mother
- maintained the friendship through the years speaks to the
- thoughtful kindness of both your parents during the tumultuous
- wartime period.
- ..
- Remembrances fo mother on 070205 mention that she and Aunt Barbara had
- a warm friendship beginning during the war years. ref SDS 38 2642
- ..
- Uncle Jim's letter continues...
-
- 5. For her time, your mother is to be remembered with admiration
- for the family she brought into the world and the struggle of
- their proper care and raising. In that respect she followed in
- the footsteps of my mother, albeit the Lord's task, both had a
- hard row to hoe. I'm sure that the Good Lord in heaven has
- welcomed her also, into His care.
- ..

-
- 6. You take care of yourself and tell the rest of the family hello
- for us. Keep in touch. I don't use the telephone anymore. It
- is just too much trying to converse with someone and not
- clearly hear the conversation. Too many jackhammers without
- ear plugs, too many arial gunnery flights with an unmuffled
- engine, too much hifi audios...

- 1. Thanks very much for your letter on February 15th, with warm
- and generous thoughts for mother. She always loved and
- respected you and and Aunt Barbara. A few years ago, you came
- up in the conversation when Millie and I were in Nipomo
- visiting, and so I called your home. After some pleasantries,
- I handed the phone to Mother. She and Aunt Barbara started
- visiting again by telephone, as mentioned in your letter.
- ref SDS 0 JS9Q
- ..
- 2. You are certainly correct that I have been blessed to have
- mother. Of course, Lillian, was "mom" during the teenage years
- coming to manhood, and remains so. In adult life until 1993,
- Lucille Johnston, became a big force, just because she would
- listen for hours, and read my writing, and then help refine my
- ideas into something useful, if they could be salvaged at all.
- Mother, mom Lil, and Lucille all welcomed Millie in 1980. I
- have been greatly blessed. ref SDS 0 JS9Y
- ..
- 3. Millie and I were pleased for Bob that so many family and
- friends attended the service on February 16th. Understandably,
- many could not attend. Your presence, however, is always felt
- at family occassions, and we carried on as you would have
- wished, as best we could.
- ..
- 4. I called Rita a few days ago. She has been having trouble with
- email, but finally got the letter I sent on February 7th
- notifying of mother's passing, and the letter on February 16th
- that explains memorial services.
- ..
- 5. There is a record on remembrances of mother, focusing in part
- on her last day, and thoughts of her husband Bob, and Millie
- and I, who were with mother, and also presenting fragmentary
- memory of those early years when she was our mom from 1943 when
- Kath was born until about 1953 or so. Rita planned to print
- the record so you can comment, if you wish, on the account of
- the world war II period. (went ahead and attached a copy)
- ..
- 6. As well, if you have access to a computer, you can open the
- record directly. ref SDS 38 0001
- ..
- 7. Reading online provides a richer experience with links for
- precision access to related context, noted by Reverend Boyd,
- who presided over services for mother on 070216. ref SDS 42
- 6W8M
- ..
- 8. There is another bit of writing I thought you might enjoy
- glancing through, if time permits. It relates to the war
- years, and the contract the Army let to construct the first
- digital computer, ENIAC, in about 1943. I mentioned to Rita in
- our call that, in writing about the WWII period, I was struck
- by Lieutenant Goldstein's role, and that his story reminded me
- of your career, but more importantly your strong character.
- This is part of a larger story, maybe 300 - 400 pages, so I
- cautioned Rita about not copying the whole thing. It is easy
- to read online using precision access. ref OF 11 GF5H
- ..
- 9. Thanks again for a wonderful letter. I treasure all your
- writings, and wish we could have worked together on shaping
- ideas over the years. You remain a continuing inspiration.
- ..
- Uncle Jim provided feedback on differences between information and
- knowledge, in his letter reviewed on 940722. ref SDS 3 8388 His
- letter on 961006 was very encouraging, and illustrates how a powerful
- working relationship might have evolved, if circumstances occurred
- differently. ref SDS 5 0001
- ..
- Another example, is Uncle Jim's letter on 970522 explaining why people
- have a hard time recognizing better ideas to improve the work.
