- Muray and Peter are members of the circle who advocate for Henry and

- Received ref DRT 1 0001 from Murray Altheim responding to the letter,
- ref DIP 1 0001, submitted to Henry and to his circle of advocates for
- Fleabyte. ref SDS 12 DW5I Murray's letter today is a composite,
- addressed to Welch with comments on the letter yesterday, then the
- narrative addresses Henry, but does not expressly introduce the change
- in address, so this is added as follows...
- ..
- 1. Rod Welch wrote in a letter dated February 22, 2005...
-
- Henry,
- ..
- Thanks for your letter today commending Peter's support,
- and noting the challenge of maintaining Fleabyte.
- ref DRT 1 0001 Your goals on January 10 for a platform to
- advance civic journalism represent the good side of
- knowledge management for advancing traditional literacy.
- Your letter today shows the dilemma of limited time, which,
- as Drucker notes in his book "Management Tasks and
- Responsibilities is our most precious resource. ref SDS 12
- DW5I
- ..
- How then to allocate time, ref DRT 1 HL6K, so that Fleabyte
- is a pleasure and not a burden to its guiding light?
- ref SDS 12 Y64U
- ..
- 2. Rod,
- ..
- Very well said -- thank you. I very much agree, ref DRT 1
- YL6O, and think one of the things I've learned over the years
- (being so fortunate as to have had contact with people like Jon
- Bosak, Eduardo Gutentag, Doug Englebart, Jack Park and Steven
- Newcomb -- in no particular order) is not anything
- technological but more about priority. About how to better
- prioritize one's life, as it's difficult to do anything
- productive about the health of the world if one's own health
- (mental, physical, spiritual) is suffering. Both Jack and I
- are light bulbs that have to watch our voltage carefully.

- ...construction of literary narrative from a complex
- knowledge web. My research involves how knowledge
- representation, management and visualization technologies
- may be used to augment the organization of research
- materials and the authoring process. Specifically, I'm
- investigating the use of computer-based ontologies in an
- authoring environment, and in how such an environment (when
- connected to the Web) may itself be considered a form of
- hyperdocument.
- ..
- Support for authorthing sounds helpful to Fleabyte's project.
- ..
- Has Jack considered Murray's work for the learning project at SRI,
- reviewed on 040221? ref SDS 6 5U6J Sounds like a good fit.
- ..
- Murray continues...
-
- 3. Your advice to Henry seems very good -- to first take care of
- oneself, ref DRT 1 HM8H, step back a bit and figure out what is
- an appropriate level of effort (if not full retirement from the
- task, which is always an honourable thing to do too), and
- perhaps look towards a future path that is more in line with
- available energy and resources. And to also look back across
- the valuable work that has been done in reiterating many of the
- things that have been said, pull it all together into the
- present DKR.
- ..
- 4. [Henry...]
- ..
- And I have said it before, but I think it bears repeating:
- please don't underestimate your worth to the community, nor
- accept that we aren't willing to hear what YOU have to say.
- ref DRT 1 RM9H You at one point said that you didn't think
- Fleabyte could continue as a one person effort. If that's
- because of the energy, certainly, we all can understand that.
- But it should also be noted that there are a lot of people out
- there blogging who have very little of value to add to the
- world, which is about the opposite of your case. I think if
- you simply swapped Fleabyte over into some simple blog sofware
- and just kept writing (at whatever frequency you felt
- comfortable and able), that in itself would be an absolutely
- great outcome.
- ..
- 5. As you know, many (well, probably most) of us are very
- technology-oriented, and we're also by nature problem solvers.
- ref DRT 1 1N4M Put a problem in front of us and we try to
- solve it. So of course the natural reaction is for us to begin
- having a discussion about the social and technological issues,
- about possible solutions, etc. to taking Fleabyte to whatever
- is its natural "next stage." This becomes a noisy conversation
- quickly. There's nothing wrong with that, except it's perhaps
- not what you need.
- ..
- 6. If quiet contemplation, some time alone and with your friends
- and family, some time to think, perhaps some time with a pencil
- and a pad of paper, whatever, then don't let all the talk of
- technology be the real issue. ref DRT 1 OO5M We value your
- company, your words, and your participation in our community of
- ideas.
- ..
- 7. I can at least speak for myself (though I believe I can speak
- for others here as well) in saying that what you write I
- certainly will read, as I find it important, enlightened,
- humane and human. And this world needs more of that, not less.
- ref DRT 1 UO6J
