- There was some difficulty removing the existing unit. This took about
- 30 minutes. Syad used a screwdriver and the "wrenchette" listed as
- part of the Mounting Assemble item L. These tools were not effective
- for removing twisting the unit from the connection to the drain. Syad
- eventually had to tap the clips on the mounting ring, shown as item E
- in the mounting assembling for the new unit. He used a hammer to
- break the seal caused by corrosion, reported on 030531. ref SDS 1 2A7O
- This severly deformed the twist lock mounting ring mechanism, but was
- eventually successful. Syad did not use instructions in the manual
- which says under para 2 "Disonccect Sink Drain" task 3 to "loosen nut
- (c) at base of sink flange. (If nut is corroded or too tight, apply
- penetrating lubricant.) When this problem was encountered on 030601,
- we asked Ray at Home Depot for a "penetrating lubricant," ref SDS 1
- 2A7O, and Ray said at that time the best solution is to purchase the
- installation service, because each situation is different, and the
- mechanic has experience for solving the problem, that typically works
- better than using penetrating lubricant. Today, Syad solved the
- problem by pounding the twist flange loose.

- After removing the existing unit, the next step was to install the
- electrical cable, which Millie purchased at Home Depot yesterday,
- following up findings on 030601 that the cable on the existing unit
- could not be reused. ref SDS 1 6D3L

- ..
- This requires removing a cover plate on the bottom of the new unit and
- then threading the new cable through an adjacent access port. The new
- cable is connected by fastening a ground to the base, and then
- connecting the wires with standard electrical twist connections that
- are held with a plastic twist lock cap. The cable must further be
- connected to the base of the unit with a presssure clamp to withstand
- tugging and pulling.
- ..
- The sink drain had to be removed, even though nominally the existing
- drain would have worked with the new unit. Since removal of the old
- unit caused the drain to twist, this lost or least damaged the seal
- between the drain and the sink. In addition, striking the old unit to
- remove it, explained above, also deformed the connecting mechanisms on
- the sink drain, so it was removed.
- ..
- Syad used generous amounts of sealant rolled into a heavy bead and
- packed this around the new drain where is rests on the inside of the
- sink surface. I was surprised by the amount of sealant he used, even
- though Ray at Home Depot had mentioned on 030601 the need to roll the
- sealant into a heavy bead. ref SDS 1 4G4J
- ..
- Syad initially pressed the drain onto the sink surface with the
- pressure of his weight. This resulted in about 80% of the sealant
- placed in the prior step being forced out from between the drain and
- the sink surface.
- ..
- Installing the new drain that connects to the sink entails several
- steps that require a particular sequence. Syad did these so quickly,
- that the specifics are not clear, but assume there are instructions
- with details.
- ..
- Essentially, the sink mechanism is disassembled, then re-assembled in
- place. It was not clear from the vantage this work was observed, but
- one issue that seems critical is to fasten the drain so that when the
- garbage disposal is twisted into place, the drain ports are aligned
- with the existing piping. Since the piping is plastic, there is some
- slight flexibility on alignment. I think the sequence that occurred
- was that Syad fastened the drain to the sink with screws. Then he
- connected the garbage disposal unit to the drain using the twist
- connection scheme, that caused problems with removing the old unit,
- per above. ref SDS 0 MP62 He then loosened the screws that connect
- the drain to the sink, and made a final adjustment to align the ports
- on the garbage disposal with the piping. Once properly aligned, he
- made a permenant connection for the drain to the sink by tightening
- the screws. This final tightening resulted in perhaps 98% of the
- sealant initially applied to be squeezed from between the drain and
- the sink surface.
- ..
- It appeared there is a special fitting that comes with the garbage
- disposal for connecting the curved drain pipe to the drain port. He
- used some fittings from the prior installation to complete the piping
- by connecting the trap to the exhaust pipe and to the piping that
- exits to the main drain piping.

- Prior to connecting the drain from the dishwasher, Syad cleaned the
- fleixble hose that runs from the valve on the sink to the garbage
- disposal. Cleaning showed there was a fair amount of corroded
- material in this section of hose. That explains why the connection
- port on the old garbage disposal was severly corroded, and it may also
- account why drainage backs up and spills out the valve on the sink
- when the dishwasher is used over the past few years.

- Today, after Syad completed the work we tested both the garbage
- disposal and started a cycle of the dishwasher to test the
- connections. There is no leakage on the main diswasher drain line.
- Syad left before completing the test on the dishwahser operation, but
- subsequent observation showed no evidence of leakage on the drain
- connections, and there was not flooding during use of the dishwasher
- that spilled over the relief valve on the top of the sink.
