- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 63 0000, ref SDS 62 0000.
-
- Assisted Gary in getting SDS files installed in the proper
- directories. He had most everything done correctly, as shown in the
- record on 020924. ref SDS 63 U69G There was a problem with the stuff
- on the d drive, and we got that fixed. He had to copy all of the
- records for sd 08, which are the diary records. Since this is the
- longest part of the exercise, took about 30 minutes to get this done.
-
- ..
- We used that time to setup Medit for the editor, and did an
- orientation of editing functions; how to open the menus with Shift F10
- and the right mouse button; how to use the mouse for scrolling the
- file up and down, and scrolling between files by clicking on CMD; and
- openning Help with Ctrl F10.
-
- Help opens sublevels with F1 or Enter and F2 to return to the
- prior level.
-
- ..
- I had forgotten, but after the call found out through experimenting
- that the left mouse button can be used to open a sublevel in Help
- and the right button returns to the prior level in Help. Since Gary
- does not yet have a keyboard for SDS, the mouse may be easier than
- the function keys for most operations.
-
- ..
- Once SDS was online, we first looked at my records.
-
- Gary can use my records as a template for examples and to
- experiment learning various functions. Should avoid archiving my
- records.
-
- Showed how to open my records without archiving by clicking
- between no and the quotation mark in the string no "archive"
-
- ..
- Profile levels were demonstrated using F1 to scroll through
- alternate assignments for function keys.
-
- Demonstrated using F1 F1 F2 to set line draw functions, which are
- used to create underlines that identify headlines in SDS records
- that Gary is familiar seeing in SDS records on the Internet.
-
- [On 021001 Gary found an Omnikey keyboard with function keys
- on left end that works better for SDS. ref SDS 64 LZ4I
-
-
- ..
- We opened a diary with F3 and did other basic tasks.
-
- ..
- We opened some of my SDS records and examined the Control Field.
- Clicked on a Subject/File to open the organic structure. Tried using
- F1 F2 to open another level for a particular subject. Gary said this
- is not working.
-
- [On 021002 Gary reports F2 key may not be working; research shows
- this may indicate W98 is beginning to fail. ref SDS 65 5Y8A
-
- ..
- Removing Read Only Attribute
-
- We started an exercise to set up an SDS user ID for Gary, but it
- crashed because all of the files copied from the CD have a read only
- attribute.
-
- Gary feels he can create a routine to remove the read-only attribute
- so he can access SDS records and, then complete setting up an SDS user
- ID account for himself.
-
- There is some background on this problem first reported on 990816.
- ref SDS 13 0001
-
- ..
- On 990817 there is a report that using xcopy instead of the
- Windows drag and drop feature will avoid adding a read only
- attribute to files copied from a CD to a hard drive. ref SDS 14
- 0899
-
- This record o 990817 has command application also listed for
- W2K. ref SDS 14 435K Gary is using W98 which is probably
- the same.
-
- ..
- On 990818 the record shows that DOS attribute command will remove
- the read only attribute for all of the files, but not for the
- directories. ref SDS 15 8977 Since we need the read only
- attribute removed from everything, it may be necessary for Gary to
- remove everything and transfer it again using the xcopy command,
- unless he comes up with another solution.
-
- ..
- Sent Gary a letter linked to this record to provide information on the
- read only attribute problem.
-
- [On 021002 Gary says this is solved. ref SDS 65 564J
