050744 - Ron showed work done this morning to cut and clear brush surrounding
050745 - the upper deck.  It appeared to be very difficult for anyone to work
050746 - on the side of a steep incline where Ron had cleared away brush under
050747 - the deck.  This illustrates the top physical shape Ron has maintained
050748 - to enable a 70 year old man to do this kind of difficult work.  Ron
050749 - jumped up on one of the side benches to point out something in the
050750 - trees near the South property line.  This feat of easily jumping
050751 - vertically about 18 inches, further showed he is in very good shape,

050797 - adventurous spirit to live here, similar to Steve and Lilly's place in

050799 - chance of dealing with difficult traffic.  So, it is only a guess what

050981 - Richard Explained Symptoms of Heart Attack and Obtaining Treatment

050983 - Richard discussed the long recovery he had from his ordeal, and showed
050984 - the 9" scar on his left arm where the surgeon removed tissue to repair
050985 - his damaged heart.  He related experience leading up to recognizing he
050986 - had suffered a heart attack.  Initially, he felt a tightening on both
050987 - sides of his jaw.  A little later he felt two (2) sharp stabs in his
050988 - chest, and illustrated by pressing his index and middle finger hard
050989 - against my chest on either side of the breast bone, just below the
050990 - collar bone.  He was living alone, and so had to drive himself to the
050991 - hospital, where an attendant admitted him.  Richard told the attendant
050992 - that he had likely suffered a heart attack.  The attendant took an EKG
050993 - and said it looks okay.  A few minutes later, Richard had another
050994 - attack, and asked the attendant to do the EKG again.  This time the
050995 - machine recognized significant problems, and Richard was rushed into
050996 - surgery.

051009 - life, as Ron and Richard have suffered.  Only time and love of family
051010 - can heal these scars, but it is hard to be patient, when your whole

051013 - him even though he and Kathy are having difficulties in their
051014 - marriage.  Ron asked if he and Kathy still talk?  We were pleased that

051016 - hospital with their daughter and son, to be with Richard during his

051025 - Driving Test Showed Progress, Recovery Needed for Handling Complexity

051027 - After lunch, we drove to a large vacant lot there in town.  Ron
051028 - said this was formerly the Scotts Valley airport, which accounts for
051029 - the mostly empty area.  On the way, a car passed in front of us making
051030 - a turn, and Ron said "Look there; I know I can drive as well as that
051031 - lady," referring to the elderly driver, who could barely see over the
051032 - dash, but otherwise made a harrowing left turn in heavy traffic
051033 - without incident.

051036 - After further discussion, we parked in the vacant lot, and Ron drove
051037 - the car around for a few minutes to test his feeling about being ready
051038 - to drive.  He was able to navigate pretty well starting and stopping,
051039 - turning to miss objects.  We drove out of the lot and down an empty
051040 - street for about a block and half, reaching a speed of about 15 MPH,
051041 - then came back, and ended the driving test.  Ron said he felt pretty
051042 - good, but feels tired.  He plans to take a nap when we get back home.

051061 - driving well.  He is a little hesitant, as to be expected from not
051062 - having driven for some time, and being nervous about wanting to make a
051063 - good impression.  He remembered to turn and look over his shoulder and
051064 - to use the rear view mirrors, as needed to determine surrounding
051065 - traffic conditions (which in this case there was none, because of our
051066 - location).  Richard noted that the difficulty he had after his heart
051067 - attack was holding in his head surrounding conditions, for example
051068 - turning your head to look over your shoulder to check conditions, and
051069 - then integrating what was just observed with what is in the forward
051070 - field of vision.  People normally do this with ease, but loss of short
051071 - term memory makes this more difficult.

051154 - accessible.  He could then go and stay on the hill during weekends, or
051155 - whenever he likes, but the point is that getting down from his home on
