1710 - Summary/Objective
1711 -
171101 - Follow up ref SDS 50 0000, ref SDS 48 0000.
171102 -
171103 - Kath called the other day and explained that she has completed the
171104 - first phase of radiation treatment. She has another session of chemo
171105 - therapy next week, then on 011010 she will have a cat scan. On 011104
171106 - there is a meeting with the doctors to discuss progress, prognosis and
171107 - treatment options. Patty may support that meeting, as with prior
171108 - planning discussions.
171109 -
171110 - [On 011105 good news on Kath's progress. ref SDS 54 0001
171112 - ..
171113 - This morning Millie and I drove to Nipomo to visit the family.
171115 - ..
171116 - Traffic was light, so the trip worked much better than the last time,
171117 - where we got stuck on a highway "parking lot" for an hour or so near
171118 - Morgan Hill.
171119 -

1715 -
171501 - Arrived in Nipomo. It is a beautiful day. Warm with slight cooling
171502 - breeze.
171504 - ..
171505 - We stopped at Vons grocery store and bought some pastries and things
171506 - to share with everyone.
171508 - ..
171509 - When we got to the house, Bob was already up reading the paper.
171511 - ..
171512 - Kathleen was in the backyard working. It was nice to see her busy and
171513 - intent on getting things done.
171515 - ..
171516 - Our cousin Robin stayed over last night, and was getting up when we
171517 - arrived, so we all had a good talk together. She is beautiful as
171518 - ever; could not help noticing that Robin has lost weight, someone said
171519 - 15 pounds. Doubtless others noticed that I have "found" those missing
171520 - pounds, and more.
171522 - ..
171523 - Kathleen was excited that so many of the family would be visiting
171524 - today, and wished that Kathy, Amy and Michael could have made the
171525 - trip. She asked about Ed, and commented how much she enjoys the
171526 - letters Ed has been sending. Explained call last night that Kathy
171527 - talked to Ed yesterday, and he has work today that prevents visiting
171528 - with us this weekend, but they all hope to come soon.
171530 - ..
171531 - Mother got up a little later. Bob said mother received shots for pain
171532 - treatment a week ago. Her spirits seemed high today; she was excited
171533 - about the visit from the family yesterday. Marsha drove Sally, Mom
171534 - Lil, and Marsha's son, Brian, down from her home in San Mateo. Sally
171535 - and Mom Lil had driven from Jacksonville, Oregon, near the California
171536 - border, the day before on Thursday.
171538 - ..
171539 - Kathleen remembered from yesterday that Brian is studying psychology
171540 - in college,
171542 - ..
171543 - Mother Dorothy had more good news that Pablito got a raise recently.
171544 - Everyone is excited about how things are going for Patty and Pablito,
171545 - who just recently returned from 2 weeks vacation in the Philippines,
171546 - visiting Pablito's parents, who have retired there, after raising a
171547 - family in New York, where Mrs. Utzurrum was a doctor for many years,
171548 - specializing in oncology.
171550 - ..
171551 - Robin had to leave, but will be back later for dinner with her world
171552 - famous "cabbage crunch" salad.
171553 -
171554 -
171555 -
171557 - ..
1716 -
1717 -
1718 - 1003
1719 -
171901 - Pablito and Patti, and their dogs arrived.
171902 -
171903 - A few minutes later, Mom Lil, Marsha, Sally and Brian arrived.
171905 - ..
171906 - Somehow the conversation turned to Diane, the boys and Nina. I
171907 - related Diane's situation. ref SDS 49 0001 Mother Dorothy asked for
171908 - Diane's address to send her a card. Explained Ross and Claudia are
171909 - doing well in New York. Richard is stationed in Japan, but may be
171910 - headed for action in the Afghanistan matter. Nina is living in
171911 - Orinda.
171913 - ..
171914 - We talked about the national emergency caused by terrorist attacks in
171915 - New York and on the Pentagon in Washington DC that occurred on 01091l.
171916 - Mostly, everyone noticed it is nice to have some period of national
171917 - unity where everyone is aimed at solving a really big common problem.
171918 - We know this won't last. Like our family getting together to visit
171919 - this weekend, we like the atmosphere of common interests, even though
171920 - it will ebb as immediate danger recedes, and smaller matters again
171921 - dominate personal and national attention.
171923 - ..
171924 - Pablito related having lived and grown up near the World Trade Center,
171925 - because his parents worked in that area. He recalled wandering with
171926 - school friends throughout the public areas, and related that there are
171927 - 7 stories of structure underground. This personal history makes
171928 - events of the past few weeks all the more real. Pablito did not
171929 - mention having heard of loss among his childhood friends and family,
171930 - but chances are likely that some perished or where injured in the
171931 - attacks.
171933 - ..
171934 - Talked to Marsha about her work providing emotional intelligence to
171935 - compliment traditional literacy. Her organization trains teachers to
171936 - present seven life skills, along with traditional curriculum for early
171937 - grade school students. Cannot remember the precise description of the
171938 - 7 skills; sounded similar to Covey's seven habits of successful
171939 - people, reviewed on 921205. ref SDS 1 4080
171940 -
171941 - On 010114 some people associate Knowledge Management with
171942 - developing fantastic social relationships, that seem related to
171943 - "emotional intelligence. ref SDS 8 EK3I
171944 -
171945 - [On 011001 suggested small project to develop emotional
171946 - intelligence. ref SDS 51 CK6F
171948 - ..
171949 - [On 011010 emotional intelligence cited as key marketing factor.
171950 - ref SDS 53 3X4F
171952 - ..
171953 - Marsha indicated studies have shown that teaching ways of coping with
171954 - people and problems through planning and communication skills have
171955 - been more valuable than traditional focus on academics. One study
171956 - followed 1,000 people beginning in the 1920s, and showed that people
171957 - with good coping skills tended to do well in life. She used a term,
171958 - possibly "linear intelligence" that brings success doing traditional
171959 - academics but does not guarantee success in life. Marsha's work tries
171960 - to bring a balance in education that prepares children with both
171961 - emotional and academic skills.
171962 -
171963 - [On 011001 letter to Marsha on her work. ref SDS 52 0001
171965 - ..
171966 - This seems to support ideas for improving education discussed at SRI
171967 - the past year or so, reported on 010614. ref SDS 35 HD6O
171969 - ..
171971 - ..
171972 - Brian has curtailed his formal studies for awhile. He remains
171973 - interested in psychology, and mentioned that his mom's work is related
171974 - to cognitive science. He has gained experience using the computer to
171975 - support Marsha's work. Brian has not been working out lately. He was
171976 - in great shape a few years ago from doing a lot of running and
171977 - lifting. He still looks to be in pretty good shape though.
171979 - ..
171980 - Brian has occasionally joined his Dad on sales trips, and enjoys that
171981 - work. He keeps in touch with his brother, Eric, who is living with a
171982 - girl friend in the Lake Shasta area. Brian remembered the year,
171983 - probably around 1982 or 1983 when Millie and I joined him, Eric and
171984 - their Dad in a charity run through the area near their home in Menlo
171985 - Park. Think we still have a T-shirt that commemorates the event, sort
171986 - of like a local Bay-to-Breakers run that is held every year in San
171987 - Francisco. Brian asked if I was in wrestling, like his Dad, and I
171988 - explained how Robby got me started in wrestling before junior high
171989 - school under the tutelage of Sam Lawson, who passed away a few years
171990 - ago, reported on 990429. ref SDS 3 0482
171992 - ..
171993 - Sally and Mom Lil looked wonderful. They had a good visit with
171994 - Kathleen.
171996 - ..
171997 - Sally said the girls are now playing tennis with their Dad, and
171998 - beginning to give him a good game. He is very proud of their
171999 - development in all areas of life. We missed visiting with Mike, Mary
172000 - Heather and Katti. Millie and I hope to visit everyone in
172001 - Jacksonville, Oregon before too long.
172003 - ..
172004 - Marsha, Sally, Mom Lil and Brian could not stay for dinner, and so
172005 - left about 1300.
172007 - ..
172008 - Mom Dorothy cornered Marsha just as they were leaving and mentioned
172009 - having felt ignored on an occasion many years ago. Upon prompting,
172010 - Marsha recalled some of the particulars, and felt circumstances had
172011 - caused a distraction because Patti needed immediate attention. So
172012 - today, there was opportunity to review events etched in the mind from
172013 - over 30 years ago, and perhaps to make small adjustments that comfort
172014 - perspectives today, and for the time ahead. Struggling with real
172015 - events in the moment grow emotional intelligence.
172017 - ..
172018 - In the afternoon, everyone took a nap, except Bob who has a shelving
172019 - project underway in the garage. While Bob completed his work, Millie
172020 - and I read and enjoyed the serenity of the countryside. We looked
172021 - through drawings Bob has layed out on the dining room table showing
172022 - plans for landscaping the property.
172024 - ..
172025 - People napping began waking up around 1500.
172027 - ..
172028 - Watched television for a little while to get caught up on the national
172029 - emergency.
172031 - ..
172032 - Millie and Pablito worked on cooking a big ham for dinner.
172034 - ..
172035 - Millie, Patti and I went to the store for salad fixings, and to get
172036 - Patti a veggie burger, because she is not eating meat these days. She
172037 - explained concern about animal rights, and recalled our trip to
172038 - McDonalds on 010514 when we stopped for a fish burger on the way to
172039 - visit Kath at the hospital. ref SDS 18 2R9L We did not discuss plant
172040 - rights, but it was fun going to the store together.
172042 - ..
172043 - Robin arrived about 1800 with her "cabbage crunch" salad, which
172044 - everyone enjoyed, along with the vegetable salad Millie made. Mother
172045 - had several helpings. It was good to see her appetite returning.
172047 - ..
172048 - Patti and Pablito's dogs, Cloe and Baily are excellent retrievers.
172049 - Outside, Bob's dog, Thelma has a great time chasing balls, frisbees
172050 - and just about anything someone will throw and then wrestle away from
172051 - Thelma when the big German Shepherd returns with her treasure. Cloe
172052 - and Baily do not compete, almost as if knowing this is Thelma's yard,
172053 - so they do not interfere. But inside the house Pablito played ball
172054 - and showed that Baily and Cloe have great skill at retrieving and even
172055 - catching the ball out of the air.
172057 - ..
172058 - Mother and Millie spent time pouring over fashion magazines, coming up
172059 - with exciting wardrobe ideas. Sounded like they were making plans for
172060 - a shopping trip.
172062 - ..
172063 - Patti and Pablito brought pictures of their vacation to the
172064 - Philippines, showing Pablito's parents' home, and visiting the
172065 - countryside. One picture showed Patti underwater smiling. Amazing
172066 - how clear the water is there.
172068 - ..
172069 - After dinner, we all watched some television together.
172071 - ..
172072 - Mother asked if I have talked to Aunt Barbara and Uncle Jim lately?
172073 - Explained having planned to call, but have not gotten around to it.
172074 - Mother said she planned to send Aunt Barbara a card. Decided to give
172075 - them a call, while the thought is fresh in our mind.
172077 - ..
172078 - Aunt Barbara answered. Her voice was weak and shaky; but, after a few
172079 - minutes catching up on family news, she got much stronger. She said
172080 - they are concerned Jimmy might be called back to active duty since
172081 - there is increased demand for pilots to meet the national emergency.
172082 - Uncle Jim has been busy as ever. They had project to replace the
172083 - driveway, which caused some disruption for awhile, but it all turned
172084 - out well.
172086 - ..
172087 - Mother had a long talk with Aunt Barbara. They have been buddies from
172088 - the days of World War II, when Aunt Barbara and Mother were teenage
172089 - brides. Aunt Barbara lived with my Dad and Mom when Uncle Jim was
172090 - shipped overseas. They have many memories of sharing time during a
172091 - period of high tension, drama and excitement, when everyone was
172092 - focused on winning the war, then getting back to normal of raising
172093 - families after the war, and over all these ensuing years.
172095 - ..
172096 - Patti and Robin had a long private conversation in the backyard.
172098 - ..
172099 - Kathleen has rallied the family, drawing us closer in humanity by
172100 - tracing the turns of our lives from the days in Alhambra, Onterio, El
172101 - Monte, Whittier, Saratoga, San Jose, Sunnyvale, then Cupertino where
172102 - children grew to reach out and touch the world.
