Subject:   Demo SDS for LANL at Intel

Dear Morris,

Think I may have mentioned that Los Alamos National Lab has a KM effort. Cliff Joslyn seems to be leading the project. He has asked to look at SDS based on ideas for partnership development in my letter dated March 15. They have reviewed POIMS and clicked around a bit to get a feel for Communication Metrics on the Internet, as reported in Cliff's letter on April 25. He wanted to meet today, and that didn't work out because of a trial I am hearing as a juror. Cliff is now thinking about meeting during the week of May 21, when he will be back in town for meetings with Xerox PARC. In particular, he wants to do some planning for our meeting, which may reflect heightened interest.

I am guessing Xerox PARC is nearer to Santa Clara, than to the City. Any chance you could sponsor this meeting at Intel? That would add some luster to the Welch colors, and facilitate Cliff's activity at Xerox PARC. You helped a few years ago when I used a conference room at Chips. In this case, I would like you to attend the meeting, since Cliff is a computer expert type, and will want to know about architecture and so on, which is way out of my range. Cliff has some specific needs for his Xerox project, but we are also discussing research ideas along the lines you reviewed last year for the NSF proposal. We seem to have a window of 4 or 5 days, per Cliff's letter, so there is flexibility to fit something into your schedule.

Would also like some pointers on protocol.

My sense is to schedule a meeting early in the week so, if Cliff wants some follow up, that can be accommodated in his schedule. As well, we might try to meet about 1100 so there is flexibility to go into the lunch hour without impacting others, who may want to use the conference room. That worked pretty well for the meetings with Dave Vannier in 1995 and 1996 on PMI event planning, but maybe things have changed. Additionally, if you could help on this, you would likely be able to transition the meeting into a lunch event, if things seem to be going well.

I realize that with your schedule there is only about a 5% chance this can be worked out, so don't feel I making a huge demand here. If it is convenient, and not terribly difficult, let's try to do this. If you have another idea that accomplishes some, but not all of the objectives, that would be great. For example, some of the Intel KM people might take this occasion to look at SDS, while meeting Cliff. Maybe other colleagues would like to attend.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
