Subject:   Solutions to Omnibook Issues
Order CH08050-00

Dear Jarmon,

Thanks for your letter this morning on progress with this order. After we talked yesterday morning, I tried further efforts to configure communication using a PCMCIA card from another machine. This revealed another issue: The layout of the power cable conflicts with the modem connection.

Your letter says CDW "... will exchange your modem with the combo modem," however, the problem is that we have a PCMCIA card that only supports networking, and we need a combination card that supports both networking and modem operations. However, in any case, this is not a preferred solution, for the reasons set out in the record yesterday.

You do not mention in your letter installing Mcafee virus protection software, which is a requirement, per my letter on May 9.

Since I did not hear back from you yesterday, I took some time and investigated further options, and found that a Toshiba Tecra 8100 seems to be a closer fit to our specification, and the original Sony notebook that we exchanged on April 26.

The CDW specs for Toshiba Tecra 8100, CDW part 206166, show it has an internal modem, which is a stronger solution than using a PCMCIA card. It is configured with 256 MB RAM, and has all the other features of the Omnibook, but seems about $300 cheaper. It does not have a DVD, but we do not need that. This may help solve the problems that occurred with the Omnibook installing w2000, that evidently contributed to the partitioning problems mentioned in your letter this morning. Eliminating the DVD may save future problems with W2000 that is sensitive to this issue based on CDW's experience. We don't want to spend a lot of money to buy more problems.

On the other hand, there may be reasons why the Toshiba Tecra 8100 is not a good solution.

Please let me know your ideas on moving forward as soon as possible.

Thanks very much for all your extra work on this order.

Sincerely,

THE WELCH COMPANY
