- ..
- Summary/Objective
-
- Follow up ref SDS 3 0000, ref SDS 1 3095.
-
- Delivered the report on Communication Metrics issued by the U.S. Army
- Corps of Engineers, ref DRP 2 6172, per Dale's request yesterday.
- ref SDS 3 V35L
-
- ..
- Dale read the first few pages of the report on Communication
- Metrics issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. ref DRP 2 6172
-
- Dale feels a major advantage of SDS, which supports Communication
- Metrics, is providing organizational memory, and making it easy to
- retrieve. Dale said people get so much information, no one has time
- to organize it, and so relevant information cannot be obtained when
- needed, reflecting the article he cited yesterday, about the failure
- of technology to improve productivity. ref SDS 3 9566
-
- [On 000709 Bill DeHart reported that experience using SDS at PG&E
- shows it makes information more useful by providing better
- organization than other technologies. ref SDS 4 0784
-
- I explained this is why people hate lawyers.
-
- When there is a problem, lawyers are paid to "discover" information
- that nobody had time to find, when it was needed, and then it turns to
- be relevant to failed decisions. Nobody is paid to provide the
- organization that converts information into useful organizational
- memory in order to make investment in IT productive. As a result,
- growth of IT compounds complexity, which overwhelms span of attention,
- and so failure occurs.
-
- Dale read Marc McGovern's comment in appendix A of the report by the
- US Army Corps of Engineers, ref DRP 2 14F7, and noted that Marc
- confirms Dale's impression that SDS solves the Information Management
- problem by enabling people to find what is needed in time to use it.
- ref DRP 2 1877
-
- About this time, a fire alarm went off in the building and there were
- instructions from the building management for everyone to move down 4
- floors. This disrupted our meeting. Someone eventually clarified the
- instruction that only people on the top floor were required to move
- down 4 floors, so we did not actually move, but everyone got ready and
- this clogged the halls and the lobby.
-
- We decided to go to lunch.
-
- Walked over to a small restraunt a few blocks from Dale's building on
- California and Montgomery. Got a seat an an outside table because the
- weather was sunny and warm.
- ..
- Dale commented that it is nice to know someone is working to
- improve management. Everyone is so busy, there isn't enough time to
- really think about issues explained in the Communication Metrics
- report. He said Roger Bush had it right saying people do not have
- time to think these days, and this leads to problems. ref SDS 1 3479
- ..
- Dale was kind in saying that someday the world will discover Rod
- Welch and all the work to make management more productive will begin
- paying off. He said the basic idea of developing a role for analysing
- communication is attractive, based on his experience using analysis
- for managing stocks. Dale feels it is hard to help executives, who
- are always trying to cut cost, to recognize that investing
- intellectual capital saves time and money. This is hard even for
- people who make a living investing.
