141311 - ago. Formerly, there had been two Supervisors. He was moved from being
141312 - a Sales Supervisor, back to doing straight sales.  Several months ago,
141313 - he was elevated back to being a Sales Supervisor because the person
141314 - who had been retained as the Supervisor under the downsizing program,

141317 - Paul said his company got him a notebook computer, but there is
141318 - not enough time for him to use it.  His company has reduced the
141319 - support staff for the Supervisors in the belief that personal
141320 - computers permit them to be more productive.  I mentioned the article
141321 - in Fortune on this situation occuring more widely, ref SDS 16 line
141322 - 167.  Paul said that since he doesn't have time to use the computer,
141323 - and there is less administrative support, he has gotten behind in his
141324 - work.  He said he has to spend a lot time putting out fires from
141325 - misunderstanding that formerly did not occur.

141327 - Paul explained that within the past week or so he met with his boss
141328 - and told him he wanted to quit because he was behind in his work and
141329 - so was not doing the job needed and expected by the firm.  His
141330 - supervisor asked him not to quit because if he did then the supervisor
141331 - would have to do all of Paul's work and so would be even further
141332 - behind himself than he is now.

141334 - As a result, Paul is learning to survive by being behind in his work,
141335 - something he would not tolerate previously.

141337 - I told Paul about the Associated Press report on Feb 4, that managers
141338 - are wasting a lot of time in inproductive meetings because people are
141339 - unprepared, there is not an agenda, key people do not show up, and
141340 - there is no follow up, ref SDS 13 line 108.  Paul said his meetings
141341 - are better run than reported by AP.  He said, however, his sales force
141342 - is attending a supplier meeting next week and so he plans to contact
141343 - them for an agenda in advance of attending that his people can use to
141344 - prepare for the meeting.
