Definition of Communication
1007 -
100701 - ..
100702 - Asilomar Conference Planning
100703 -
100704 - Followed up work at ref SDS 22 line 96.
100705 -
100706 - Bill came by and we had a chance to visit about this. Stan Watson
100707 - joined us and so we discussed preliminary thinking.
100708 -
100709 -
100710 - Day of Week
100711 -
100712 - Stan feels we should hold the event on a Saturday, so people can
100713 - attend even if their employer does not support the effort.
100714 -
100715 -
100716 - Date of Event
100717 -
100718 - It also appears that the best timing might be January or February for
100719 - the following reasons:
100720 -
100721 - We want to issue a series of notices in the PMI Newsletter and
100722 - make announcements at PMI meetings in order to encourage
100723 - attendance.
100724 -
100725 - Since the next PMI meeting will be in September, we could not
100726 - get the series of notices done until at least November.
100727 - December is not a good month to have an event due to the
100728 - holidays. Therefore January or February is the first good
100729 - chance.
100730 -
100731 - The only alternative would be to send out separate notices,
100732 - but this requires an advertising budget.
100733 -
100734 -
100735 - One Day Event - Scope Management
100736 -
100737 - "Communications" is a broad field (see new PMBOK Guide 10.2.2.1 p. 43
100738 - Exposure draft 940801) covering personal effectiveness, information
100739 - flow, organization, storage, retrieval, conduct of meetings, phone
100740 - calls, follow-up, notice, politics, ergonomics (organization of
100741 - office), hardware, software and so on. There is the emerging or
100742 - transcending technologies angle, per ref SDS 18 line 65 where
100743 - communication metrics comes up, ref SDS 11 line 66.
100744 -
100745 - [See follow up at ref SDS 24 line 172.]
100746 -
100747 - ..
100748 -
100749 - Communications is presented in the new PMBOK Guide under section 2.4.2
100750 - and section 10. There appears to be a clear error at 2.4.2 and
100751 - 10.2.2.1 asserting someone who receives information
100752 -
100753 - "...is responsible for making sure that the informatino is
100754 - received in its entirety and understood correctly."
100755 -
100756 - [See follow up at ref SDS 23 line 213; ref SDS 23 line 278.]
100757 -
100758 - ..
100759 - We agreed we cannot improve the complex world of "communications" in a
100760 - single day, but we can present ideas and things to try, which lay the
100761 - groundwork for meaningful change through a follow-up conference.
100762 -
100763 - [See follow up at ref SDS 23 line 138.]
100764 -
100765 - Bill suggests making this a one day event for logistical reasons. Stan
100766 - feels it makes sense to shoot for one day, rather than trying to do an
100767 - initial three day affair.
100768 -
100769 -
100770 - Three Day Follow-Up Event
100771 -
100772 - I explained one concept for presenting communications in a 3 day
100773 - event, per ref SDS 18 line 115, which was submitted to Bill via ref
100774 - DIP 5 line 26, at ref SDS 21 line 63.
100775 -
100776 - We considered the idea that communications is too broad to cover in
100777 - one day, but it is essential to offer something of value attendees can
100778 - use to improve their work, or at least evaluate in the context of
100779 - their daily work. Therefore, a one day event could develop ground
100780 - work for a 3 day event at another time to explore problems and
100781 - solutions with greater focus. Possibly the Asilomar conference could
100782 - be the later event.
100783 -
100784 -
100785 - Comments -- Concept
100786 - Planning Theater Application
100787 -
100788 - Perhaps we could let the one day event be a "planning theater"
100789 - using the ideas of Russ Archibald and Bob Gillis at ref SDS 1 line
100790 - 250. Attendees at the Workshop would learn "by doing" how the
100791 - planning theater is applied, plus develop planning input for the
100792 - Asilomar Conference on communications.
100793 -
100794 - The "hook" is that we are going to do a planning theater workshop
100795 - to illustrate communication methodology which will have the
100796 - practical purpose of eliciting from the membership their vision
100797 - and concerns about communication scope, methods, problems. We
100798 - will present some ideas for attendees to try and test and report
100799 - on at the Asilomar Conference.
100800 -
100801 - The results of this "workshop" could be developed further in
100802 - surveys in the PMI Newsletter. E.G.
100803 -
100804 - How much time spent in meetings
100805 - phone calls
100806 - reading EM
100807 - correcting mistakes
100808 - thinking
100809 -
100810 -
100811 -
100812 - Coordination with Ahmet Taspinar
100813 -
100814 - Bill noted that Ahmet has been elected to manage the Asilomar
100815 - Conference for 1996. He invited Ahmet who was visiting with another
100816 - small group, to join our considerations when time permits.
100817 -
100818 - A few minutes later Ahmet joined our discussion. Bill explained our
100819 - thinking about coordinating events next year to present something in
100820 - January or February on communications, and then do a follow up in June
100821 - or July at Asilomar to develop solutions in communications field.
100822 -
100823 - Ahmet is open these ideas.
100824 -
100825 -
100826 - Ideas & Professional Development
100827 -
100828 - Ahmet indicated the importance of presenting professional solutions
100829 - (discussed previously with Rosanne Sykes at ref SDS 18 line 65. Bill
100830 - feels this is critical to maintain credibility in the professional
100831 - development objectives of PMI. I mentioned this was the aim in our
100832 - discussions with Terry Morford at PG&E, ref SDS 20 line 102, the
100833 - results of which ref SDS 20 line 110, show more is needed to focus on
100834 - the value of communication metrics and how to apply this new area of
100835 - professional expertise.
100836 -
100837 - We discussed possible use of Ed Scannel who was the opening speaker at
100838 - PMA in Phoenix a few weeks ago. I related the story Ed told about Mr.
100839 - J.C. Penny offering his ideas on communications and the role of
100840 - experience in extending the vision of an executive, ref SDS 17 line
100841 - 163.
100842 -
100843 -
100844 - Comment
100845 -
100846 - I would like to try and get Stan Mosk to deliver some remarks,
100847 - but it might be difficult for him to attend at Asilomar.
100848 -
100849 - ..
100850 - Preliminary Proposal Meeting 950524
100851 -
100852 - We discussed with Ahmet conducting a preliminary planning meeting in
100853 - the Welch office next Wednesday at 0930, where Bill and I will
100854 - consider specific proposal language for the initial communication
100855 - event.
100856 -
100857 - Rosanne Sykes and Cheryl Leff are meeting with Welch at 1000 on
100858 - another matter, and so we plan to explore preliminary thinking at that
100859 - time on a workshop for communications. Ahmet indicated cannot attend
100860 - this meeting.
100861 -
100862 - Results of this session will be submitted to Ahmet. Stan requested
100863 - that he be copied with results. This will be done to obtain full
100864 - input on crafting the event.
100865 -
100866 - [See follow up at ref SDS 23 line 70.]

Senior Council
1104 - Summary/Objective
1105 -
110501 - Discussed senior council with Ahmet Taspinar. He said PMI-NCC is
110502 - already working on implementing this idea. It will be a council
110503 - comprised of prior board members. So for example, Ahmet said Bill
110504 - DeHart could be a member.
110505 -
110506 - I explained my idea of ensuring participation and continued access of
110507 - senior members, so this is basically an age requirement. All seniors
110508 - over 55 or over 60 would automatically qualify, and then they would
110509 - select their representatives. What I am after is an opportunity for
110510 - senior members to tell us about their experience on matters that seem
110511 - like good ideas to new board members.
110512 -
110513 - Ahmet noted this is the aim of the present initiative, as well. He
110514 - said I can attend monthly executive council meetings to offer further
110515 - suggestions.
110516 -
