080905 -    Bill DeHart received the Wally Kruse award for outstanding

080920 - Eugene (Gene) A. Bordegaray was the feature speaker.  He heads
080921 - up the SFIA management team that is expanding faciliities at the

080924 - Gene reported that SFIA plans to hire another 10 or so PMs, and are
080925 - hiring CM firms to manage the construction contracts.  This will be
080926 - about $2.3B over the next few years.  He said it is a big challenge to
080927 - rapidly grow an organization.

080944 - David McClure sat next to me.  He is a project manager on his own.  He
080945 - made an announcement about an internet connection for PMI Naitonal,
080946 - that will be on line next month.  David asked for volunteers to help
080947 - launch this project.  I gave him my card.

080949 - Also made contact with John I. Barsky, P.E. who is a resident
080950 - engineer with the City of SF, who has a project at the main sewage
080951 - treatment plant at Hunters Point.

080960 -     He sat across from me and said he is aware that Bill DeHart
080961 -     believes SDS has done a good job at PG&E.  I have the impression
080962 -     that Sherrill, like Morris Jones, feels the results at PG&E with
080963 -     SDS are due more to my expertise ref SDS 8 5932, than to the
080964 -     wonders of SDS.

080968 -         We have to figure out a way to distinguish between the
080969 -         benefits of having a good tool and a good implementer.  There
080970 -         seems to be a great willingness to dismiss the tools and the
080971 -         system.  Attributing good results to people is attractive
080972 -         because it reduces the burden of investigation and learning
080973 -         better methods.

080975 -         To me this is like saying Bob is a good writer, without
080976 -         acknowledging that his skill is in applying a powerful set of
080977 -         tools:  the alphabet and rules of grammar.  I think this
080978 -         occurs because writing is so ingrained in people (i.e., they
080979 -         learn it at an early age, and then assume its existence) that
080980 -         they overlook the possibility that it can be meaningfully
080981 -         improved by modern man, or at least by anyone they know.  If
080982 -         the improvement is not announced by Harvard, MIT, the CIA or
080983 -         Bill Gates, it is suspect.
