0404 - ..
0405 - Summary/Objective
0406 -
040601 - Follow up ref SDS 12 0000.
040602 -
040603 - Nick will refund cost of ServicePak disks, but not phone expense.
040604 -
040605 - I am now concerned about how to solve OS2 icon object failure problem
040606 - reported at ref SDS 14 line 63, without using the ServicePak.
040607 -
040608 - Partially solved Omnipage problem, but extensive testing shows it is
040609 - still failing.
040610 -
040611 - Submitted ref DIT 1 0001 to Nick confirming these understandings, and
040612 - sent ref DIT 4 0001 to George on the Omnipage problem.

0409 - Progress
0410 - ..
041001 - Nick's voice mail said he is away from his desk, but in the
041002 - office, and that he will return the call today or tomorrow.
041003 -
041004 - I left a message asking about status of his review of claim submitted
041005 - via ref DIP 1 line 27, at ref SDS 12 line 45. Advised that his
041006 - colleague, Shawn, says we may need the ServicePak, at ref SDS 14 line
041007 - 49.
041008 -
041009 -
0411 -
0412 -
0413 - 1423 Nick called back
0414 -
041401 - He apologized for not having already answered our claim, ref DIP 1
041402 - line 27. Nick said delivery of US mail is very slow to their
041403 - location, and it takes awhile to get to him once it is delivered by
041404 - the post office.
041405 -
041406 - He gave our claim to a colleague who has prepared a letter that is
041407 - still under review for final edits. In general they will credit for
041408 - the program disks, but not for the phone calls. To make progress on
041409 - other issues, we deferred detailed consideration of this IBM's views
041410 - on phone expenses until after we recieve Nick's letter.
041411 -
041412 - I explained the notice from Shawn today that we may need to ServicePak
041413 - afterall to solve the TRAP 000e problem, per ref SDS 14 line 49.

041417 - ServicePak Enigma
041418 -
041419 - When George called about the Omnipage problem explained below, I asked
041420 - about his experience installing the Service Pak. I am not sure if he
041421 - indicated he has installed it, or whether he simply indicated that
041422 - problems arise when it is installed. He feels fairly strongly there
041423 - should not be any problems getting the desktop to come back, as occur-
041424 - red when we upgraded from 2.0 to 2.1, per ref SDS 1 line 84, and
041425 - other problems sort of summarized beginning at ref SDS 2 line 49.
041426 -
041427 - It is not clear why we should spend a lot of time installing 21
041428 - disks, and risk days and weeks, solving new problems, in order to
041429 - get a single correction to a specific problem?

0706 - Summary/Objective
0707 -
070701 - Nick facilitated contact with support on this problem. George offered
070702 - some ideas, which yielded some success. Omnipage is now able to con-
070703 - sistently scan simple documents under OS2, but is consistently crash-
070704 - ing on more complex jobs
070705 -
070706 - Submitted ref DIT 4 line 30, including this record, via fax including
070707 - to George for planning further improvements on following points:
070708 -
070709 - Omnipage should perform under OS2, as well as it does under
070710 - Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0 with respect to document complexity
070711 - and scanning speed.
070712 -
070713 -
070714 -
0708 -
0709 -
0710 - Progress
0711 -
071101 - Nick said they are investigaing the Omnipage problem, mentioned at ref
071102 - SDS 12 line 122 in the claim. He looked up the APR, but found there
071103 - was too much information to find the part that related to our problem,
071104 - so we could discuss it comprehensively during our call.
071105 -
071106 - Nick asked for George's last name.
071107 -
071108 - This information is shown in the claim submitted on May 2, at ref SDS
071109 - 12 line 122. I used that to open the record at Dec 9, ref SDS 4 line
071110 - 35, and reviewed the record with Nick. We considered the benefit of
071111 - following up on the specific point of setting up the conference call
071112 - with the HP rep, in light of the fact that George had been unable to
071113 - solve the problem with IBM internal resources and expertise.
071114 -
071115 - [subsequent experience reported below shows this conference still
071116 - seems necessary]
071117 -
071118 -
071119 - Nick said he will have someone call us on this.
071120 -
071121 -
071122 -
0712 -
0713 -
0714 - 1525 George called back
0715 -
071501 - We reviewed the problem explained at ref SDS 3 line 54, and seem to
071502 - have solved it today.
071503 -
071504 - [Although further testing the next morning indicates the problem
071505 - is not solved.]
071506 -
071507 - George had a newer version of sjii.exe (dated in late 1993) called by
071508 - Omnipage settings DOS_DEVICE, so we decided to download it to replace
071509 - my version dated whereas, our program is dated 920718.
071510 -
071511 - We found that he has several settings that are different from those
071512 - used in our discussions last year. Therefore, we conformed my
071513 - settings to those on his computer, as shown below. I did a test and
071514 - it worked; so, it appears the settings are important.
071515 -
071516 - George agreed that the most important setting is likely the
071517 - int_during_io "on."
071518 -
071519 - [Although the next day, he said we can disconnect this to
071520 - speed up performance, per ref SDS 16 line 210.]
071521 -
071522 - I asked George to prepare an ascii file containing instructions on
071523 - configuring and using Omnipage that reflects the experience he has
071524 - gained since our discusison on Dec 9, and which is not set out in the
071525 - IBM OS2 manual. George said he will do this and will call tomorrow or
071526 - the next day so I can download this file.

071529 -

0717 -
0718 - Settings
0719 -
071901 - George feels his computer is configured similar to mine, i.e. 486 DX
071902 - 50 with 16 MB RAM. We made following changes in my settings to
071903 - conform to those he is using successfully:
071904 -
071905 -
071906 - ..
071907 - George Rod Changed
071908 - -------- ---------
071909 - DOS High off on
071910 - DOS UMB off on
071911 - EM_MEM_LIMIT 6144 2048 6144
071912 - IDLE_SENSITIVITY 100 75 100
071913 - INT_DURING_IO on off on
071914 - MEM_EXCLUDE_REGION blank cc000-cffff cc000-cffff
071915 - XMS_MEM 6144 2048 6164
071916 -
071917 -
071918 -
071919 - After making these changes and before installing the updated sjii.sys
071920 - driver, received from George today, per above, we did a test run. It
071921 - was successful on 2 pages. Off line I will try several more runs.
071922 -
071923 -
071924 -
071925 -
0720 -
0721 -
0722 - 1725 Testing - Success and Failure
0723 -
072301 - Scanned a 6 or 7 page 10 point magazine article, successfully. It was
072302 - fairly complex, and so seems like a good test. Typically this would
072303 - have failed, so this is a good sign.
072304 -
072305 - Overall operation seems much slower which may be due to the new
072306 - sjii.sys routine. Possibly it is slightly incompatible with the ocr
072307 - program. It is much slower to even load Omnipage after clicking on
072308 - the icon, than in Windows running under DOS 5.0.
072309 -
072310 - The accuracy of the scan seems higher using new sjii.sys, which may
072311 - account for the slower operation.
072312 -
072313 - Actually, turned out the speed is the same for the old and new
072314 - sjii.sys. Speed varies according to other programs being run
072315 - concurrently that consume memory. OS2 does not seem to run
072316 - Omnipage as well with multiple programs as does Windows 3.1 running
072317 - directly under DOS 5.0, which conflicts with IBM's design
072318 - objective.
072319 -
072320 -
072321 -
072322 - ..
072323 - Failure Encountered
072324 -
072325 - Early next morning, got another failure of the kind explained at ref
072326 - SDS 3 line 54, after scanning 11 page magazine article in what seems
072327 - like 8 point font, at ref SDS 15 line 44. I swapped the old sjii.sys
072328 - back for this scan job to see if scanning speed would increase. It
072329 - did not seem to do so. The scan itself takes about 45 seconds per
072330 - page, which seems much slower than under Windows 3.1.
072331 -
072332 - Swapped sjii.new back to sjii.sys and scanned article again.
072333 -
072334 - Tried blanking mem_exlcude_region, same as George's system.
072335 -
072336 -
072337 - Program crashed during scan on page 9. Had to re-boot to start over.
072338 -
072339 - Tried same scan job, but without loading SDS, which is a DOS app, and
072340 - so should only take at most 1 MB of ram.
072341 -
072342 - Scanning is nearly twice as fast when Omnipage is only program
072343 - loaded, takes about 25 seconds to scan a page instead of 45
072344 - seconds, when SDS is loaded when the scan is being done.
072345 -
072346 - Completed scanning all 10 pages. Got same failure during
072347 - recognition on about page 5, same as at ref SDS 3 line 54.
072348 -
072349 - Tried putting mem_exclude_region setting back to cc000-cffff, and ran
072350 - job again.
072351 -
072352 - Same result as above. Scan completed, but on page 3 of recognize
072353 - operation, got error message.
072354 -
072355 -
072356 - ..
072357 - Tried Less Complex Job
072358 -
072359 - Decided to try the job that scanned successfully earlier this
072360 - evening. It is a 6 page 10 point font magazine article.
072361 -
072362 - This was successful.
072363 -
072364 -
072365 - Complex Scan Failed Again
072366 -
072367 - This time tried changing mem_limit_exclude back to 2048. This run
072368 - was nearly successful. The failure occurred on page 9 or 10 rather
072369 - than on page 4 - 5, as seemed to occur on prior tries.

0905 - Summary/Objective
0906 -
090601 - Windows 3.1 is very slow to load, and has crashed several times. Had
090602 - to re-boot a few times to make the thing go forward. When we click on
090603 - the Program Manager, the icon and the pointer change to indicate the
090604 - program is loading, but nothing happens. Cannot click on anything.
090605 -
090606 - Problem is less pronounced when no other applications are loaded, but
090607 - that defeats the purpose of a Windows multi-tasking environment.

110504 - I asked Nick for a reference to contact about demonstrating SDS, per
110505 - my offer at ref DIP 2 line 42, I also expressed appreciation for his
110506 - earlier efforts to obtain review through his immediate channels. Nick
110507 - noted the professionalism that has guided the Welch presentation of

110509 -
110510 - The issue is how to obtain serious review of an alleged innova-
