- [On 100327 0815 Candi and Larry out of town visiting Karen
- and Peggy for Peg's 90th birthday, same day as Ed's
- memorial service; they had fond memories of Eddie growing
- up together as an extended family. ref SDS 34 6I6I
- ..
- 4. Ed was diagnosed with lung cancer only 2 weeks earlier, and was
- preparing to begin treatment. We are all "dodging bullets"
- from birth, and they come faster after age 50. Sadly, Ed was
- taken before treatment could begin, and fortunately without
- prolonged suffering, though he was in considerable pain off and
- on from last October. Ed's stoic character, strength, and
- resolve delayed getting help, and this may have tipped him over
- the edge [discussed on 100217 1952. ref SDS 11 2041]
-
- [On 100320 1230 memorial services for Eddie, minister did a
- great job explaining Ed's life. ref SDS 33 DA7P
- ..
- 5. Ed was always part of a large extended family. He is survived
- by Kathy, and his daughter Amy, and her family, husband
- Michael, and daughters Simone and Mia. [reflecting memorial for

- and reported finalized on 011215 0413. ref SDS 2 0001]
- ..
- 6. Growing up, Ed was surrounded by 7 brothers and sisters.
- Kathleen was the oldest, then Rob, Rod, Stephanie, David, then
- Ed, Sally, and Jerry. We lived in a lot of places. World War
- II was cataclismic, disrupting lives everywhere. Marriages
- suffered emotional trauma. Mom and dad split up and got back
- together 4 or 5 times. During a positive period, I believe Ed
- was born in Ontario, California, when we lived on Acacia Street
- in a home our dad built, while in business with his brothers
- after the War. Ed's first home was on property owned by
- grandmother and granddad, who lived in the "Big House." Our
- Aunt Dorothy and Uncle Kenneth lived with their two daughters,
- our cousins Linda and Judy, in another small house on the same
- property [see memoriam for mother Dorothy on 070205 0537.
- ref SDS 4 KN63]. Family split ups occurred mostly when Ed
- still very young, Ed stayed at times with Aunt Barbara and
- Uncle Jim, with Uncle Pat and Aunt Peggy, and for a time with
- Grandmother and Granddad [see again memoriam for mother Dorothy
- on 070205 0537. ref SDS 4 Y343]
- ..
- [When Ed was 2 or 3, mother Dorothy left dad yet again, and
- this time took all of the kids to grandmother's home, which was
- only a 1 or 2 bedroom motel-like place. Us kids playing with
- other kids in the complex, joined in somehow concocting a big
- barrel full of acidic liquid. Must have been there for weeks
- before we arrived, and created from rainwater and "garbage."
- Kids would just through anything into this barrel, and over
- time it became acidic. You could see it continuously bubling.
- The older kids all new this was dangerous, but one day, Ed then
- only about 3, threw a coke bottle into the barrel. This caused
- a splash that partially hit Eddie on the lower leg. To to this
- day he still has a scar - reported on 070205 0537. ref SDS 4
- Y431]
- ..
- 7. Mostly, though Ed came of age living in Garden Gate and then on
- Stevens Creek in Cupertino. This time was fairly stable
- because Mom, Lillian came into our lives. About age 8 - 12 Ed
- was already showing his exceptional determination to excell and
- will to win playing football and baseball with older brothers.
- Though the smallest, he always worked the hardest. To this
- day, I am inspired by Ed's constant example.
-
- [On 100318 1513 letter from Rob adds perspective on Ed's
- life and strong character. ref SDS 31 HW7V
- ..
- [On 100318 2015 in telephone call with Kathy we remembered
- a visit to Ed and Kathy's home on Bernard Street in
- Sacramento, possibly around 1977 - 1980; on that occassion
- Ed was upset because Kathy had changed the arrangement he
-            had carefully made for towels or bedding in a hall closet;
- thus demonstrating a passion for order and determination
- for excellence, that others find difficult to handle.
- ref SDS 32 6I6I
- ..
- 8. Dad put his sons to work in the shop helping with the business.
- Again, as the youngest (Jerry was still too young to work in
- the shop at that time), Ed objected to being assigned to just
- clean the glue from various lamination projects dad had, like
- building doors or cabinets for a customer. Ed wanted to
- measure, cut the wood, nail things together, and so on.
- ..
- 9. Ed soon took his place on the fields at Cupertino High School.
- He played quarterback, and shined on defense, returning
- Cupertino to a winning record in his senior year. His love of
- sports became a life-long passion, along with politics.
- ..
- 10. When dad died in 1969 at age 65, the family gathered for a
- service, Ed led the boys in finding a few minutes to throw the
- football around out in the street in front fo mom and dad's
- home, as we did as kids growing up in Garden Gate. When Amy
- gratudated from high school, Kathy had a celebration, and we
- again threw the football around. When our older sister,
- Kathleen died we threw the football after the memorial at Bob
- and Mom's home in Nipomo, and which happened to be Ed's
- birthday. 011215 1438, ref SDS 3 0001 So hopefully, there
- will be time, after services for Ed on Saturday, to toss a few
- passes to Rob and Jerry in memory of Ed's love of sports.
-
-            [On 100320 1230 deferred throwing the football to honor Ed;
- Rob hurt his shoulder, so will try to do this next time.
- ref SDS 33 LP7I
- ..
- 11. After graduating, Ed served with distinction in the US Air
- Force, following the footsteps of Uncle Roy, and Uncle Jim
- joining up during World War II. Ed met and married Kathy,
- while on assignment in the Boston, Mass, area. Like so many of
- his era in the 60s and early 70s, Ed served a tour, possibly 2
- tours in Vietnam.
- ..
- 12. Ed may have picked up smoking while on duty in Vietnam. The
- military culture and exigencies of war foster changes to cope
- with harsh circumstances. In any case, at age 20, issues of
- lung cancer seem a long way off.
- ..
- 13. Ed was fortunate to have Kathy as his life partner. She was
- always there for him, and he for her, and daughter Amy.
- ..
- 14. So, we have lost a wonderful brother, husband, father, and
- friend, and look forward to celebrating Ed's life in memorium
- on Saturday.
